Left: Mont de la Ville, Whilst the whole of Jersey is enormously rich in history and now topped by Fort Regent, rises above heritage, you would not necessarily associate the four topics the St Helier above with St Helier, let alone expect to find them in one waterfront quite small area. Yet La Vingtaine de la Ville is one such place, and in its midst, not far from the place St Helerius was murdered in 553 AD, lies Le Mont de la Ville where: • A medal of Claudius dating from AD 54 was unearthed in 1785 • A 30’ diameter dolmen was discovered in 1785 • The ancestors of the Waterfront rabbits once roamed So where on earth are we talking about? When you look at, enter or travel past Fort Regent, give a thought to what was there before – nothing at all really! However, in 1299, the Assize Court awarded the full ownership of Le Mont de la Ville to La Vingtaine de la Ville. By 1572, it was one of only four of the St Helier at that time – now there are seven. This wasn’t too exciting, as it really only enabled the inhabitants to graze sheep and collect gorse. The shepherds were paid in sheep dung. The Seigneur was not a happy bunny! The right to hunt rabbits belonged to the

Seigneur of Samarès, eventually removed in 1681, as it was declared that he had forfeited his rights by neglecting to exercise them. In 1785, whilst a parade ground was being levelled, a Roman coin and a large dolmen were discovered. The coin disappeared and the dolmen B was presented to the then Governor of Jersey, transported and erected in the UK at Henley-on-Thames. 767281 www.jimsbarbers.co.uk The British decide to protect the town of St Helier Le Mont de la Ville was the ideal location to build a fort, so in 1804 it was sold to the British Government for £11,280. Jersey Vingtaine prints its own money In the 19th Century, the Vingtaine was managed by elected officers called Procureurs. Using the income from Le Mont de la Ville, rents and by printing their own bank notes they began to fund vital work in St Helier – drains, culverts, footpaths, roads, harbours etc. What you can see around St Helier today are truly monumental records to the work of those early visionaries who carefully planned and built what St Helier is today, and will hopefully be for many years to come. Inevitably, even by printing Jersey’s own money, funds could not manage the scope of work to be done. From the early part of the 20th Century, the construction work and maintenance was taken over and is

continued today by the Parish, Harbours and Public Services Departments. Whilst the commitment and involvement in the Now in our new Gents’ salon at Vingtaine’s heritage by its elected Procureurs and the support of Bagatelle Parade, Five Oaks residents has remained, expenditure inevitably diminished. Air-The Meeting of the Waters If I dream of the past, at fair Fancy's command, Up-floats from the blue sea thy small sunny land! O'er thy green hills, sweet Jersey, the fresh breezes blow, But silent and warm is thy Vallée des Vaux ! There alone have I loitered 'mid blossoms of gold, And forgot that the great world was crowded and cold, Nor believed that a land of enchantment could show A vale more divine than the Vallée des Vaux. A few white little cots, calm as clouds in the sky, Or as still sails at sea, when the light breezes die, And a mill with its wheel in the brook's silver glow Form thy hamlet of beauty, sweet Vallée des Vaux ! As that brook prattled by like an infant at play, And each wave as it passed stole a moment away, I thought how serenely a long life would flow, By the sweet little brook in the Vallée des Vaux.
