3 1 Important Information Regarding Alpha Systems Firmware Console firmware is backward compatible with respect to hardware and OS revision. Therefore, to assure that your system has the latest in terms of PAL code, boot device support, and bug fixes, upgrading firmware to the latest revision is recommended. The release notes document for your system model will note any exceptions to this general recommendation. The firmware CD provides the latest console firmware revision for each system model that has had a firmware release within the last three years. For systems that have had firmware releases within the past two years, the CD also contains a previous revision (typically one revision back), so that the firmware could be down-rev’d if this became necessary. The system-specific firmware release notes provide instructions on installing firmware revisions other than the latest (default) one. Firmware updates for the DMCC21164 and DMCC21264 (FORCE Flexor A164, and FORCE Flexor A264) are provided by FORCE COMPUTERS Inc. For more information, refer to the following: • Your supplier • A FORCE COMPUTERS Field Applications Engineer • The World Wide Web page available on the FORCE COMPUTERS site: http://www.forcecomputers.com/

4 2 Firmware For Eatlier Generations Of Alpha Systems Firmware files for systems that have not had a new firmware release for at least three years are not included on this CD. Firmware images for the following systems can be obtained from the internet (see Section 6 below): • AXPVME • ALPHAVME • ALPHA200 • ALPHAXL • ALPHA255 • DECAXPPCI33 • ALPHA300 • DEC2000/DECPC AXP 150 • ALPHA400 • DEC3000 • ALPHA433A • DEC4000 • ALPHA500 • DEC7000 • ALPHA600 • DEC10000 • ALPHA600A • Digital Personal • ALPHA800 • Professional Workstation • ALPHA1000/1000A XP1000 • ALPHA 1200 • SMARTengine/Alpha 21064A • ALPHA2000/2100/2100A • SWXCRMGR for • ALPHABOOK DEC2000/DECPC AXP 150 • ALPHAPC164/LX/SX

3 Boot Procedure for Firmware CD To boot the Alpha Systems Firmware Update CD, insert the CD in the disc drive and type "boot " at the console prompt (example: >>>boot dka400). The system will respond by displaying system-specific "README-FIRST" information on the screen, followed by the default firmware update utility bootfilename, and the prompt "Bootfile:". At this point, you may press the RETURN or ENTER key to accept the default and load the latest (current) update, or you may type a specific bootfilename (including directory) to load a previous (older) version.

5 This procedure allows for easy default booting of the latest Console firmware update program for all systems. For most systems, the image also contains updates for the various I/O adapters available. However, for systems which require a separate update program for I/O adapters, consult the system-specific or option-specific Release Notes to obtain the the correct procedures. Note: Some systems require that you take certain action before booting this CD to perform a firmware upgrade. Actions might include setting a hardware jumper or switch, or setting a particular console mode or variable. Please refer to the system-specific release notes for your system if you are not sure whether special procedures apply to your system.

4 Operating Systems/Firmware Revision Matrix Table 1 lists the minimum acceptable Alpha Systems Firmware Update CD Version for versions of Tru64 UNIX, and OpenVMS. The designation "FW CD Vx.x" in the table refers to the AlphaSystems Firmware Update Vx.x CD-ROM. Later versions of firmware are supported with earlier versions of operating systems. The AlphaSystems Firmware CD is updated several times per year. Refer to the release note document for your system model to identify changes (if any) from the prior CD release. 9 Firmware Release Notes Documents (CD V6.9) For instructions on updating console or I/O option firmware on your system, refer to the applicable Firmware Release Notes document. Table 5 lists the latest Firmware Release Notes documents contained on the Alpha Systems Firmware Update V6.9 CD-ROM. These documents can be copied from the CD and viewed or printed. Since the CD is dual-formatted to support both the OpenVMS file format and the ISO file format used by DIGITAL UNIX, Tru64 UNIX, and Windows NT, the documents are stored in both file formats. On systems running OpenVMS they can be found in the directory [DOC]. On DIGITAL UNIX or Tru64 UNIX systems they can be found in the directory /DOC/. On Windows NT systems they can be found in the directory \DOC\.
