Jenae Sperling and Mrs. Osborne accept the check on behalf of MVHS. Feeling the Spirit Diablos are turning up the heat as we show our spirit and won Varsity cheer section of the week (shown left.) Congratulations to our ASB on all their hard work to get our student section organized, unified, and SPIRITED. Allie Casarietti (Hype Commissioner), Shaun Gold (Boys Athletics Commissioner), and Abby Newell (Girls Athletics Commissioner) were instrumental in our winning the title. You can read more about it in the OC Register article.

MVHS did their first annual pumpkin carving contest. Students competed in a range of categories celebrating the diversity of our campus. We had barnyard animal pumpkins, sports themed pumpkins, traditional carvings, and scholarly pumpkins.

2 Club Rush This year sparked a very inclusive atmosphere as students invited each other to join their clubs. We have the school sponsored Curricular clubs like Unified Sports and AVID clubs, pictured upper right and below left, as well as Non-Curricular clubs like Gay Straight Alliance club, shown bottom right. Other club opportunities invited students to bring out their inner gamer, such as in E-Sports, which is an emerging field with numerous opportunities as well as the STEM club that invites students to bring out their inner science/tech/engineer/ mathematician. Students can even learn the Russian language and culture if they join Russian club, shown bottom left. Students also took charge of bettering the community through Service clubs like the Arthritis club shown middle right. If you are interested in joining or just simply perusing what Mission has to offer this year, please go to our Clubs page on our website. Innovative Environments

Saddleback Valley Unified School District has recently upgraded many classrooms in order to help our teachers focus on intentional lesson design, engagement strategies, and innovative practices that create successful students. Across our district, teachers have been awarded grants to update technology and flexible seating so their classrooms are more engaging learning environments. Over the past two years, Mission Viejo High School has been awarded 20 of these classroom upgrades. We are excited as more teachers are applying for these upgrades each year. Classrooms have whiteboard desks of varying heights, stools, rolling chairs, yoga balls, and a wireless voice amplification system that allows the teacher to move throughout the class with more ease and freedom. Innovative classrooms provide more opportunities for teachers to facilitate student learning, engagement, and collaboration.

MVHS: Aquatic Explorers

Mission’s Oceanography program conducted its fifth annual run of the ROV’s. Students built remotely operated vehicles (ROV’s) and tested them in the pool (shown middle and bottom right). Returning this year, students embarked on a trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific (shown bottom left). New to the trip this year, students enjoyed a special private presentation of Science on a Sphere (shown upper right). Students were diving deep into data and our changing earth. They experienced the new Honda theater and numerous marine life. If students missed out on this wonderful opportunity, there is still the beach cleanup, which offers tide-pooling and community service hours on Dec 13th. MVHS will also be returning to our favorite Toyon Bay, Catalina on March 25-27. Please ask Mrs. Kozick or Mr. Garcia for further details.

Lights, Camera, Action! The MVHS Film and TV Program is off to a fantas- tic start this fall! The Video and TV Production 2 class has been hard at work pro- ducing and broadcasting “What’s Up, Mission?”, the school’s morning announce- ments show which airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Students decorated the set for October with spooky skeletons and spi- derwebs!

The Art of TV and Film ROP class has been developing, producing and broadcasting the monthly show “Diablo Heat”, a mixture of news pieces and comedic narratives that strives to celebrate MVHS excellence both on and off campus. They have already broadcasted 4 complete episodes, featuring stories on our incredible athletics programs, Visual and Performing Arts classes, Career Technical Education class and more! Their comedic pieces have been hits, including a trailer for Tall Girl 2: Attack of the Tall Girl featuring actress and girl’s golf athlete Kayla Holliday, a funny take on the common cold dubbed “Germ Squad” created by Jack Whitney and Brandon Wagner, and an intriguing and hilarious commercial for the infamous pumpkin spice latte. Students are learning and creating in a fast paced production environment thus expanding their creative thinking and problem solving skills. 6

First Rate Comedy MVHS Drama competed at the Role About Theatre Festival on Nov. 2nd at Irvine High School against 26 schools from Southern California. Jacob Beaver -1st place for Comic Contemporary Monologue, Liam Shannon-2nd place for Comic TV/Film Monologue, Brandon Wagner - 3rd place for Original Monologue, Logan Booth, Toby Darvartanian, Liam Shannon and Danyaal Sheik for Comic Contemporary Scene. (Pictured) The following students placed in the top 10 finalists: Avery Ackerman, Kenny Cook, Adam Cox, Mia Hansen, Elijah Lopez, Natalie Moreta, Kaylia Pham, Caleb Smith. A Unique Evening of Entertainment Pairing Hollywood Stars and Student Thespians including: Jacob Beaver from Mission Viejo High School The Educational Theatre Foundation (ETF) showcased California students, including Jacob Beaver (shown below), a member of Thespian Troupe 3060, at Mission Viejo High School, along with an all- star cast and Tony Award-winner Bernadette Peters, to give back to school theatre at Thespians Go Hollywood, November 18, at the Avalon Hollywood. The annual ETF benefit supports theatre education programs for schools in need by bringing together film, theatre, and television professionals with current high school students. The all-star cast includes Rachel Bloom, Merle Dandridge, Megan Hilty, Jennifer Kumiyama, Matthew Morrison, and Juan Pablo di Pace.

They are joined both on stage and backstage by select high school student Thespians in this unique evening of entertainment. Thespians Go Hollywood is the only West Coast event where professional artists share their talents alongside behind-the-scenes stories of how they got started in school theatre, stories as inspiring as the high school Thespians with whom they’ll perform.

Thespians are members of the International Thespian Society, the honor organization for middle and high school theatre students, with 2.4 million alums, currently celebrating its 90th anniversary. 7

Mission Sustainability The AVID students are starting a Free Store on our campus to which students and staff can donate clothing, shoes, jackets, dresses, backpacks, and toiletries every Friday during period 1. After receiving enough donations, the AVID kids will sort and display the merchandise in room 511. They are hoping to open the store once per month during lunch. At that time, anyone from our campus can go in and "shop" for free, taking up to ten items. This store will help save our planet by encouraging Diablos to recycle clothing and other goods. It will also provide a place for the needy in our community to get the resources they need.

Please go through your closets and gather all the clothes you no longer wear. Bring them to room 511 on Friday morning during first period. We look forward to sharing our wealth of resources with each other!

Wonderful Water Bolsa Chica Wildlife Conservancy was generous enough to partner with MVHS Honors Biology of the Living Earth and AP Biology courses. Students during 6th period were able to participate in the piloted program where volunteers came to Mission to present where our water comes from and how we ensure we receive clean, accessible water. On the second day, they brought a water quality testing, water cycle impacts, and mobile aquarium stations for students to further immerse into the sources of our water. Students were particularly enthralled by Pam the horn shark. As a follow-up, Mission’s students created water conservation education presentations for representatives from the Municipal Water District of Orange County and the Bolsa Chica Conservancy. From the positive reviews, it is fair to say this may become a beautiful beginning to a great partnership.

AVID AVID is an outstanding program that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Sixteen of the twenty -four AVID senior students (pictured right) received their college acceptance shirts at the AVID All -Call on November 14. All sixteen have been accepted to four-year universities so far. We are looking forward to handing out more shirts as the college acceptance letters roll in. At this same All-Call, Ron Yee (pictured left), the chairman of the Mission Viejo Community of Character committee and UCLA representative, spoke to the students about the qualities colleges look for when students apply to college.

Kelly McCalister and Ron Lee pause after a successful evening

On the evening of Oct. 28, approximately 150 AVID parents and students attend the AVID Parent/Student Night addressing financial aid and ways to lower the EFC on the FAFSA. In the library, the financial aid information from Saddleback College was presented in Spanish. It was a great turn out with lots of good questions being asked!

Thank you to Maria Rodriguez for finding the Saddleback guest speaker, and to Katie Treat for finding the EFC guest speaker. Both presentations were

so valuable to hear!

MVHS Sports

The remarkable and historic boys’ water polo season included a CIF SoCal Regional Championship and CIF-SS Division 5 title. The team earned an overall record of 24-12. The Diablos beat Mt. Carmel High School out of San Diego, CA to capture our first regional title. The final score was 9-4. We earned the CIF-SS Division 5 title with a 6-4 victory over Trabuco Hills. This is the first CIF title for the boys’ water polo program since 1980! Congratulations to our entire boys’ water polo program!

You can read more about their victories by checking out the Diablo Athletics Website.

Our Coaches Have Character! Congrats to Coach Chris Ashbach (pictured far right) for receiving the Coaches of Character Award! Mr. Ashbach was honored in a ceremony this October at the Anaheim Convention Center and has been coaching baseball at MVHS for 24 years. Mission for the Armed Forces On October 25, 2019, Mission Football continued its tradition of honoring the brave men and women who have served in the US Armed Forces by hosting the 7th annual Mission Armed Forces Game. Honored military and their guests enjoyed a pre-game meal, to be followed with being ushered into the stadium and onto the field with their Varsity player for the Veteran ceremony. Over 70 Veterans were honored that evening, seeing the Diablos victorious over cross-town rival San Clemente with a final score of 38-6. Mission Viejo Football Season - The proud tradition of Mission Viejo HS football team added another historical season to the record books. All three levels within the football program finished the regular season with an undefeated (10-0) record. Mission made it to the CIF-SS Division 1 Football Semifinals vs. Mater Dei. Mission went into the game with a combined 30-0 undefeated record, but lost 49-24. MV finished as the #16 ranked football team in the nation and #5 in CA according to MaxPreps. Congratulations to our student-athletes, coaches, and football families on this tremendous accomplishment! 10

Over Thanksgiving break, marching band and color guard competed in Fresno at the WBA (Western Band Association) championships. They both won 1st place in the 3A Class Championships, also winning high auxiliary and high percussion. On November 24th, during 1A/2A/3A combined Grand Championships, we won first place, winning high music, high effect, and high percussion. We are super proud of our amazing students! If you look closely in the picture on the right, our band director, Bobby Westphall, is beardless. Mr. Westphall told the students earlier this year that if they won it all at championships, he’d shave his beard. A worthwhile sacrifice for a job very well done!

Congratulations!

Varsity Cross Country– Boys (pictured right) finished 8th overall in the Orange County Championships and 3rd at the Clovis Invitational finishing 14th in CIF Division 2. Girls also reached the CIF Championship Finals Division 2. Girls Volleyball— The team, shown far right, was ranked within the top 10 of CIF Division 3 all year. Advanced to the CIF Playoffs. Congratulations to all who competed this year! It truly was another great fall season. As our student athletes shift from fall to winter sports and we near finals, our diablo athletes know that excellence doesn’t stop when you leave the field. Stay Mission strong! Go Diablos!

Each year the Kiwanis Club of Mission Viejo honors students who exemplify extraordinary community service, citizenship, academic achievement, or outstanding improvement. Three of our students were introduced and given certificates at the first Kiwanis Award Breakfast of the year. As shown to the right, Mr. Keith Sims presented the awards to Jonathan Nava for AVID , Toni Hammork for Agricultural Science, and Jonah 11 Smith for MUN with our Principal Tricia Osborne.
