Launch Ceremony of Bank of () Development & Training Scheme cum Badminton Doubles League cum Fun Day – Heralding in the Olympic Games 2008

The Launch Ceremony of “Bank of China (Hong Kong) Badminton Development & Training Scheme cum Badminton Doubles League cum Fun Day”, sponsored by Bank of China (Hong Kong) and organized by Hong Kong Badminton Association, was held on 16 May 2005 at Kowloon Park Sports Centre. To promote the badminton sports in Hong Kong and help nurture the team players to prepare for the international competition, Bank of China (Hong Kong) also announced its commitment of HK$3 million to support the three-year “Badminton Development and Training Scheme” from 2005/06 to 2007/08.

This healthy and joyful event was jointly officiated by Mrs Rita Fan, GBS, JP, President of Legislative Council of HKSAR; The Hon.Timothy T.T. Fok, GBS, JP, President, Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China; Mr Lam Yim Nam, Deputy Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited; Dr. Tong Yun Kai, MBE, DBA, President of Hong Kong Badminton Association; and Miss Chan Yeuk Oi, Assistant Director of Leisure & Cultural Services Department.

Addressing the audiences at the ceremony, Mr Lam Yim Nam, Deputy Chief Executive of Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, said, “BOCHK is pleased to donate HK$3 million to support the “Badminton Development and Training Scheme” in the three years commencing 2005. In addition to our sponsorship of HK$5.35 million during the past 6 years, our total donation to this meaningful programmes amounts to total HK$8.35 million. Starting from 1999, Bank of China (Hong Kong) has initiated the Badminton Promotion Scheme to promote this healthy sport among youngsters and further help train up potential team players. The total number of participants in the Scheme has amounted to 300,000 since its inception. Nowadays, badminton has become one of the most popular sports in Hong Kong. In the upcoming sponsorship programme, we will launch two new items, namely “Corporate Badminton Games”

Page 1 of 2 and “School Badminton Promotion Scheme”. It is hoped that we can help promote badminton to people from all walks of life in the society by way of innovative means.”

To welcome the Beijing Olympic Games 2008, Hong Kong Badminton Association is setting up the “Olympic Junior Ambassador” to convey the Olympic spirit of commitment to excellence. It is also the initial move taken by the organizers to show the sincere hope that the Hong Kong team players can try their best to compete in the Beijing Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong team players including Miss Chen, Mr Ng Wai, Mr Hariyanto Agus, Miss Koon Wai Chee, Mr Lui Kwok Wa and Mr Njoto Albertus Susanto were invited to share the badminton playing skills with the participants. Also included in that day’s programme was “Badminton Doubles League cum Fun Day” in which 620 teams competed for the prizes. To arouse more interest among the participants, this year’s competition was extended to doubles of cousins on top of the teams of father/son, father/daughter, mother/son, mother/daughter and brother/sister . All participants enjoyed a wonderful holiday with various badminton games and souvenirs.
