Hello Mystery Fans! I must apologize for being gone so long. Perhaps it was the ennui of the pandemic, or the improving spring and summer weather, but I have not been inclined to think much about mystery books until today. However, I have a special treat for today as I will be talking about Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael mystery books. Ellis Peters is a nom de plume for Edith Pargeter who lived in England from 1913-1995. She did not attend college, but was wonderfully well read, especially in history, and she had a great imagination and excellent writing abilities. As an example of her skills, Pargeter traveled to Czechoslovakia in 1947. She became fascinated with the Czech language and culture to the extent that she became fluent in Czech and published award winning English translations of Czech poetry and prose. She wrote at least eighty-one novels and scores of short stories. She also wrote some non-fiction. If you look her up on Google you will see her life’s work. It is an impressive sight. The series that revolves around Brother Cadfael is twenty books long. The first, published in 1977, is Morbid Taste For Bones. The last is Brother Cadfael’s Penance, published in 1994 not long before Peters’ death. Brother Cadfael books take place in Shrewsbury, England, between 1137 and 1145 which was during the English Anarchy when King Stephen and Empress Maud fought for the right to rule England. Brother Cadfael is a Benedictine monk who came to the church in his 40’s after he had already been a soldier, a sailor, a lover, and had fought in the First Crusade. His life experiences allow him to be especially useful at the monastery. He is the herbalist for the brothers and for the neighboring areas. He grows medicinal plants and mixes medicines. The author, Pargerter, worked as a pharmacist’s assistant in the 1930’s and learned to compound medicines out of herbs. Her knowledge helped her to write about Brother Cadfael’s skills. Shrewsbury is a town in western England that sits in the loop of the Severn River. It has been there for centuries. If you look up Shrewsbury and click on “Medieval” you will be able to see some of the same buildings that were part of Brother Cadfael’s setting. Human nature does not change over the centuries, so there were murderers back then, too. Brother Cadfael is able to help the authorities in finding out whodunit partly because he is very wise, and partly because he is very curious and is allowed to travel away from the monastery because of his medical abilities. Good plots, interesting history, rouges, villains, hard working peasants, high lords, church background all make the Brother Cadfael books welcome reading any time. That’s it for today, Mystery fans!
