Date Meet Location ON THE TRACK: The indoor track and field season culminates with the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships Dec. 6, 2008 UW Winter Preview Seattle this weekend, hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. Washington will be sending four men and Jan. 17 UW Indoor Preview Seattle eight women to the national meet, several with national title aspirations. The two-day meet runs this Friday- Jan. 30-31 UW Invitational Seattle Saturday, March 13-14. Feb. 14 The Husky Classic Seattle The 24th-ranked Husky men’s team will be looking to make history with its third straight Top-10 finish. Wash- Feb. 15 UW Indoor Open Seattle ington was 7th in 2007 and tied for 10th at the 2008 indoor meet. The women’s team, currently ranked 18th, Feb. 27-28 MPSF Championships Seattle will look to improve on last season’s 22nd-place finish. UW’s twelve participants this year outpaces the seven Mar. 7 UW Last Chance Qualifier Seattle they sent to NCAA Indoors one year ago. Mar. 13-14 NCAA Championships College Station, Texas The championships will be held at Texas A&M’s McFerrin Athletic Center. A total of 568 participants will Outdoor compete in the championships. Mar. 20 UW Outdoor Preview Seattle A pair of seniors with national title aspirations headline the quartet of Washington men heading to nationals. Mar. 27-28 Stanford Invitational Palo Alto, Calif. Senior Jordan Boase (Bothell, Wash./Bothell) will be making his third-straight national meet appearance in the Apr. 4 Jim Click Shootout Tucson, Ariz. 400-meters, where he is ranked third with a school-record time of 46.09 seconds. A four-time All-American, Apr. 10-11 Sun Angel Classic Tempe, Ariz. Boase was third at NCAA Indoors last year and fourth at the 2008 Outdoor meet. Apr. 16-18 Mt. SAC Relays Walnut, Calif. Apr. 24-25 Oregon Relays Eugene, Ore. Senior Austin Abbott (Chehalis, Wash./W.F. West) and new school record-holder in the mile will be competing Apr. 24-25 Penn Relays Philadelphia, Penn. at his sixth NCAA meet, and fourth NCAA Indoor meet. Abbott, a five-time All-American, will be going for his May 2 vs. Washington State Seattle first such honor in the mile run, after placing seventh in the 800-meters at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor meet. Last May 8 Ken Shannon Invitational Seattle Saturday, Abbott ran 3:58.23 to break the UW school record in the mile and his time ranks seventh among the May 8-9 Pac-10 Multi-Events Eugene, Ore. entries. He also ranked in the Top-10 in the 800-meters, but chose to take a shot at the mile this season. May 16-17 Pac-10 Championships Eugene, Ore. Junior Jake Schmitt (Kentfield, Calif./Redwood) snagged the 14th and final spot in the 5,000-meter run with May 29-30 NCAA West Regional Eugene, Ore. his time of 13:54.25 set just this past Saturday. Schmitt was 21st in the 10k at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor meet June 11-14 NCAA Championships Fayetteville, Ark. and led the Huskies at the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Bold font indicates Husky home meet, at either Dempsey Indoor (indoor) or Husky Stadium (outdoor). Local newcomer Jeremy Taiwo (Renton, Wash./Newport) also will test the waters at his first NCAA Champi- onships, as he qualified 12th in the heptathlon. Taiwo won the heptathlon title at the MPSF Championships, setting a school record with 5,559 points. He will look to be Washington’s first All-American in the indoor 2009 USTFCCCA Indoor Rankings multi-events.     THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT. MADISON HUGHES - MEN’S RUGBY The U.S. Rugby Sevens Men’s National Team had success during February as did Team Captain Madison Hughes. The Eagles traveled to the Wellington Sevens the first weekend in February and then went directly to the USA Sevens tournament as part of the HSBC Sevens World Series. Hughes scored a total of two tries and 11 conversions at the Wellington tournament. During the USA Sevens tournament, he scored three tries and six conversions and was named to the tournament’s Dream Team. This was Hughes first time being selected to a Dream Team. Hughes’ performance throughout the season has him leading the U.S team in tackles and points scored and he also is in the top ten worldwide for both categories at the halfway point of the 2014-2015 season. A native of London, England, Hughes was introduced to rugby at the age of seven. He excelled in the sport and eventually began playing for the Dartmouth rugby team upon starting college there.     THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT. JEREMY TAIWO - TRACK & FIELD Jeremy Taiwo won his first indoor heptathlon national championship title earlier this month at the USA Indoor National Track and Field Championships in Boston. Taiwo scored a total of 6,237 points in the heptathlon, more than 700 points in front of the second place finisher. Not only did Taiwo’s 6,237 points make him a national champion but it also set a meet heptathlon record. The first day of the USA Indoor National Track and Field Championships held four of the seven heptathlon events. The 60m dash was the first event. Taiwo finished third with a time of 7.09 seconds. He then went on to finish first in the long jump with a 7.39m jump. Next Taiwo launched a best distance of 14.5m in the shot put to come in first, gaining 759 points. The last event of the day was the high jump where Taiwo once again came in first by clearing a 2.16m jump. Taiwo ended the day with a total of 3,492 points and the lead. Day two consisted of three events, all of which Taiwo finished in first Taiwo clears a high jump in the heptathlon at the place. The first event was the 60m hurdles, which Taiwo ran in 7.87 2015 USA Indoor Track & Field National Championships. Photo credit: USA Track & Field seconds.     THE UNITED STATES OLYMPIC COMMITTEE ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT. MEN’S RUGBY TEAM The Men’s USA Rugby Sevens National Team came together to win their first-ever HSBC Sevens World Series Cup trophy. The Eagles faced tough competition throughout the London Sevens tournament but ultimately were victorious in every match. The Men’s Eagles faced France, Portugal and South Africa in pool play. In the match against France, the Eagles scored three tries and a conversion to go up 17-0 in the first half. The U.S. team scored one more try and a conversion answering France’s 19 points to win the match 24-19. The Eagles then faced Portugal. The game was tied 7-7 at halftime but the Eagles were able to pull away and win 28-12. Next, the USA took on South Africa. The Eagles found themselves down 0-12 at the end of the first half but scored 21 points to win 21-12. The Eagles finished the day with a perfect 3-0 record. In the Cup Quarterfinal, the Eagles were up against Canada. Canada beat the USA 40-0 in the Glasgow Sevens tournament the weekend prior and the Eagles were looking for redemption.
