The Preliminary Phase, launched jointly with the European Commission (Directorate General for Education and Culture) in September 2009, was completed in December 2011. The pilot project has been proposed in small and medium-sized historic towns maintaining a close connection with their surrounding environment to define geographically

Architectural and historical objects are concentrated in the center of Zhovkva – Market Square (Zhovkva Castle, Buildings with arcaded porches, Monastery of the Basilian Order, New Town Hall, St. Lawrence Church, pillar of shame, Zvirynetski gates). Like many similar towns in Ukraine, the architectural and historical heritage of Zhovkva is in a poor condition. But some destinations with a tourism relevancy as The New Town Hall and St. Lawrence Church were restored recently. The city park needs to be restored as an important recreation area for both tourists and locals. Zhovkva traditionally holds the „Gazon Party at the King’s House” festival, where historical battles are played near the castle walls and in its courtyard, sports entertainment is held, a fair of traditional food and life is opened, and rock bands perform. Owners of vintage cars from Poland and Ukraine have been gathering on Rynok Square (Vicheva) for several years in a row. Touristic and cultural relevancy of Zhovkva Talking about the strong suits of Zhovkva, we need to mention that this city: 1. is a small, historic, beautiful spot for tourists with a great potential of development. 2. is close to Lviv, a city with an outstanding touristic relevancy (approximately 25 kilometers). 3. has a deep history and is well-known in Ukraine and abroad for its remarkable historical and cultural heritage of Ukrainians, Poles and Jews.

Bandery Str., Lviv, 79013, Ukraine [email protected] Received: July 24, 2018 / Revised: August 13, 2018 / Accepted: September 18, 2018 Bevz ., 2018 Abstract: On the base of the historical and urban studies it is presented the hypothesis that the town of Zhovkva is an example of late Renaissance urbanism and was built at the end of 16th century according to the project based on the concept of ideal city. The towns are characterised with a well-preserved original Renaissance planning structure and a number of architectural monuments that are connected with it. Reconstruction of the original historical townplans allows us to express the hypothesis of its similarity to the projects of cities published in the treatise of the Italian architect of the 16th century Pietro Cataneo. Introduction In recent years, interest in historic cities has grown significantly in connection with the intensification of international scientific cooperation in the Eastern Europe related to studying and popularizing the architectural and urban heritage.
