NNAS Lecture 1st February in the Town Close Auditorium, Norwich Castle Museum. Dr Richard Maguire, Senior Lecturer in Public History, School of History, University of East Anglia, on the Cold War Anglia project. Once again the projection equipment let us down so Richard had to begin his lecture without illustrations but gallant efforts by Sophie Cabot eventually enabled the pictures to be shown. His theme was the culture of the Cold War and he gave a brief outline of the early UK weapons programme to combat the threat from Soviet Union bombers and to launch retaliatory attacks. He chose four locations to illustrate its effects on the landscape of East Anglia. (a) RAF Bawburgh nr. Norwich (b) RAF Feltwell (c) RAF Barnham nr. Thetford (d) RAF Orford Ness in Suffolk All of these were highly classified in their time, which means accurate details about them are still sketchy. Bawburgh This was a virgin site. pristine farmland, before it became part of a radar defence network, imposed by Government without being integrated into the local community. It altered centuries of agricultural use and the surrounding landscape. Whereas Bawburgh pre-WWII was in the middle of nowhere now it is adjacent to the A47 and filled in with development. The original station was part of the 1950s Rotor Radar System to modernise the United Kingdom’s radar defences. At one time 40 airforce personnel worked there but little is left except an underground bunker with a bungalow built over the top (a similar example exists at Trimmingham). Feltwell The airfield was part of a network built in the late 1930s with a curved array of hangers, similar in layout to many of the other RAF airfields of the period (for example RAF Marham, RAF Watton and RAF West Raynham). -

News 30.04.18 Harrier Park set for take-off as access road opens A “transformational” industrial development at a strategic site in the East Midlands is expected to pick up speed after the completion of a major road which opens up access for business. Harrier Park at Hucknall is expected to support up to 1500 new jobs and attract a new generation of businesses on a site which extends to 70 acres. A long-term project led by Muse Developments, it will see up to 90,000 square metres of employment space and hundreds of new homes built on surplus land alongside the Rolls-Royce Aerospace supply chain plant off atnallW Road. Whilst residential development is already underway, large-scale industrial development hinges on new roads which will enable vehicle access to and from the site on to the Hucknall by-pass through a new access road which has been jointly funded by a £7m investment by Nottinghamshire County Council and Rolls-Royce. Councillor Kay Cutts, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, was among those present at the formal opening of the new road which leads into the site from the junction. She said that accelerating the growth of the county economy by supporting new development was a top priority. “This is an important milestone for a development that has the potential to make a real difference to the Nottinghamshire economy and we have been delighted to play a significant part in its progress,” she commented “We want to support not only world-leading businesses like Rolls-Royce but also provide opportunities for other businesses in the county to expand and for companies from outside the area to enjoy the benefits which come from investing in Nottinghamshire.” David Hughes, the Council’s newly-appointed director for Growth and Investment, added: “We need to create new opportunities for our people and show that Nottinghamshire is a great place to invest in and do business. -

MT847 was the prototype for the introduction of thicker skin at the tailplane root. Constructor’s number 6S-643774. 4 Apr 44 First flight. Presumably used for manufacturer’s trials. 28 Feb 45 To No.6 Maintenance Unit RAF Brize Norton, Oxon. 15 Dec 45 To Aeroplane and Armaments Experimental Establishment at Boscombe Down for unspecified tests. 18 Feb 46 To No 29 Maintenance Unit, High Ercall, Salop for storage. 14 Nov 50 To No. 226 Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Stradishall, Suffolk, where it was coded UU-A. Handley Page, Lachmann, flow control and future civil aircraft John Green ABSTRACT Frederick Handley Page and Gustav Lachmann independently developed and patented the concept of the slotted wing as a means of increasing maximum lift. Subsequently they co-operated on the project and Lachmann joined Handley Page Ltd. The Handley Page slotted wing became used worldwide, generating substantial income for the company from use of the patent, and its descendents can be found on all modern transport aircraft. In the years following World War II, Lachmann led research at Handley Page to reduce drag by keeping the boundary layer laminar by surface suction. Handley Page led this field in the UK and developed a number of aircraft concepts, none of which came to fruition as full scale projects. However, looking to the future, the basic concept of laminar flow control holds out arguably the greatest potential of all technologies for reducing the fuel burn and environmental impact of future civil aircraft. 1. INTRODUCTION This is the story of two men of genius, Frederick Handley Page and Gustav Lachmann, Figs. 1 and 2. They were brought together by chance, as a result of having independently, and unknown to each other, invented and patented the same aerodynamic concept. During World War I they had been on opposite sides. Handley Page, who had been 28 at the outbreak of hostilities, established his company’s reputation as the designer of the large biplane bombers, the ‘bloody paralysers’ sought by the Royal Navy in 1914, that made a great contribution to the war effort in 1917 and 1918.
