(Year End June 30, Merry Go Round Children’s Foundation helps deserving yet financially disadvantaged kids access the technology and tools they need to achieve their academic & social potential. 2 Chairman’s Message

Dear Supporters and Stakeholders,

In our 19th year of operation we experienced another record year welcoming 785 new grade seven students to the Kids, Cops & Computers program. In 612 students were enrolled in 38 schools and another 173 students from non-metropolitan communities in five provinces across enrolled in Kids, Cops & Computers in partnership with the RCMP Foundation. Thanks to the support of our generous donors, each of these deserving youth from financially disadvantaged circumstances were provided with brand-new HP laptops, educator support and police mentoring.

A key component of Kids, Cops & Computers is helping kids develop G. Scott Paterson essential academic and life skills during this growth period of their lives. The Lead and Learn sessions they attend through the school year with police officers and educators provide foundational digital literacy skills they need for future success and helps them develop stronger relationships with adults and authority figures.

We are grateful to our community partners whose passion and commitment to Kids, Cops & Computers ensures the Program’s ongoing growth and success. In Toronto, we continue to partner with both the Toronto District and Toronto Catholic District School Boards as well the Toronto Police Service. HP remains a key associate as our Technology Partner in providing brand new laptop computers to our participants and accessing volunteer expertise that benefits the Program.

Even though technology has become prevalent in our everyday lives and costs less than it did when we launched the Program 19 years ago, low-income youth are still being left behind. We see the need with the ever-growing number of kids enrolling in Kids, Cops & Computers each year. That is why we are excited to have the goal of bringing our Program to kids in every province across the country over the next five years. We are on the right track. Our partnership with the RCMP Foundation, forged in 2015, saw the Program triple this year from three programs in three provinces to nine programs in five provinces.

3 Meet Legend Meet LegendLegend, future volunteer Legend is a hardworking and determined student who joined Kids, Cops & Computers this year at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Toronto. He is actively engaged with Merry Go Round Children’s Foundation as a volunteer and student ambassador.

Before joining the Program, there was no functioning computer at home. “My parents had been taking me to the public library so I could complete my assignments. The laptop I received from Kids, Cops & Computers helped me do my homework on time and took away the hassle for my parents.”

Legend is a firm believer in giving back to the community. As a member at De Santos Martial Arts and one of the student leaders for the Karate Kids extracurricular program at St. Joseph’s, he works as a mentor to younger students helping them practice and not give up on the art.

“In the future, I would like to continue volunteering with different causes,’ he explains. “Such as with food drives and helping to feed the homeless, as well as with programs to help stop bullying in schools.”

4 Message from President & CEO

Dear Friends,

Computers and digital literacy are recognized as essential for student success today yet we continue to see a digital divide between those with access to home computing technology and those without.

It may be hard to believe but there are thousands of kids in our country who simply don’t have the financial ability to obtain the technology and tools that are now essential to their success. With your help, we are changing this situation for so many youth that are just waiting for the opportunity as their peers to access technology and achieve their academic and social potential.

Pati Greenwood In receiving a brand-new HP laptop and the support of police officers Queen Alexandra Public School Launch and teachers, each student participating in Kids, Cops & Computers is given an an equal opportunity to thrive. Through your gifts, our kids receive state-of-the-art technology and tools to assist with their homework and social development, they also obtain the confidence in their ability to succeed and the hope of brighter future.

Over the coming years, we’ll continue to expand our program, beyond Toronto and across the country, thanks in part to our partnership with the RCMP and to you our generous and committed donors.

These are exciting times and I’m so grateful for the part you’ve played.

Pati Greenwood, MBA, CFRE President & CEO Merry Go Round Children’s Foundation

Since 1998, Merry Go Round Children’s Foundation’s Kids, Cops & Computers program has worked in partnership with both the Toronto District and Toronto Catholic District School Boards, as well as the Toronto Police Service to uniquely leverage the power of technology for social good.

Community engagement remains a top priority of the Kids, Cops & Computers program. Our ongoing partnership with the Toronto Police Service encourages positive and trusting relationships between police officers and students.

Toronto Police Officers lead five Lead & Learn sessions throughout the year with the support of educators. The sessions explore a variety of topics that help kids feel safe and confident online. These dedicated community partners are committed to helping students become successful in their academic activities and in their relationships with peers, family members, and others. Staying Connected with Kids, Cops & Computers Families

Maintaining open communication with students and their families remains a top priority for Kids, Cops & Computers. Four Parent Night sessions were held in the Fall of 2016 to provide an overview of the Program and the commitments kids are asked to make as part of their participation.

Special thanks to Officer Megan McGarry and Officer Ryan Park of Tthe oronto Police Service for facilitating the sessions, educating parents on safety and answering questions. The events were very widely-attended by families and will be continued in the coming years.
