WELCOME TO LINGFIELD

Good evening a welcome to tonight’s SCFL Premier Division game against Eastbourne Town. Our visitors have had a mixed start to the season, a good home win against local rivals Langney Wanderers has been followed by an FA Cup exit to Cray Valley and a de- feat on Saturday to Shoreham. Meanwhile the Lingers disappointing start to the sea- son continues. A 3-0 FA Cup defeat at Raynes Park was followed by an agonising 5-4 defeat at Broadbridge Heath on Saturday, the team fighting back from being 4-2 down only to concede five minutes into stoppage time. Saturday also saw the debut of Billy Carney, an exciting forward signed from local Bostick league club Chipstead. Billy will offer manager Dixie Dean more attacking options alongside our regular strikers.

The reserves start their season on Thursday with a visit to Chatham Town and then a visit to Tonbridge Angels Reserves on Saturday. Meanwhile the first team may as well book a bank holiday vacation in Eastbourne, they visit Eastbourne United on Saturday in a re-arranged fixture and then Little Common on Bank Holiday Monday, both games being played at The Oval. Our next ‘home’ game is on Friday 31st August when we wel- come Epsom & Ewell in the 1st Round Qualifying for the FA Vase. The game will take place at Whyteleafe FC, 7.45pm kick off.

Enjoy the game, come on you Lingers!

NEXT HOME GAME FRIDAY 31ST AUGUST - 19:45 KO VS EPSOM & EWELL FA VASE 1ST QUALIFYING ROUND at WHYTELEAFE FC

CLEMS CORNER

Lingers lose out in 9 goal thriller!

After our poor performance and exit from the FA Cup, we travelled south to Broadbridge Heath (BBH) search- ing for our first win of the campaign.

Both sides went into the game with identical records and so the points could allow either side to make a big jump up the table.

BBH started lively, we could hardly string 3 passes together and everything was on the back foot. BBH smelt blood and attacked, taking the lead early doors from our own decisions really, I think a Johnston air kick at fault. 1-0. It did settle us down though and began to compose passes together, and grew into the game. BBH made a lot of effort in the initial press, and if we got out of that, big spaces were there for us. We equalised 10 mins later through a Stead delivery on the left hand side, met by Ransome for his 2nd goal of the Season. A good header! 1-1. Wasn’t too long before or own problems allowed BBH to restore their lead, a Mayhew mis- placed square ball left us exposed and the front 3 of BBH were very quick to react all afternoon and their obvi- ous threat, 2-1. We equalised before e half was out when Wilford got to the byline on left hand side who’s pulled back cross was tucked away well by Stead. 2-2 and went into the break.

A message to cut out silly mistakes and we felt we’d win the game... despite the instructions, we were 3-2 in a matter of minutes in the 2nd half. Plenty of time left but really frustrating all day all round defensively. BBH doubles their lead with 30 to play, again from the liveliness of the 3 forwards. Looking like the game was lost, the introduction of Billy Carney who’s dual signing from Chipstead this week looks to be a good one, and the welcomed return of Ben Connolly from a minor injury just before the start of the season. Both made impacts off the bench, both giving some sharp direct attacking options. We got one back from Carney’s direct run through the middle who fed Ransome for a cute reverse flick over the top for myself to brings down and slide home. Think we are in dispute on whether Ransome was just trying to get his first touch under. We got back level 10 mins from time, another substitute in Jake Horn who returns from injury and back in the fold who’s cross / shot from the right hand side found the far top corner, very fortunate but he got his due fine for claim- ing a shot. 4-4, and there was only one winner from there, 3 at the back, 3 forwards on and wing backs in high areas... we were pushing for the points. The only danger was Fender for BBH on the counter who could get himself isolated one on one up the other end. We pushed, pushed and pushed, but didn’t find what we needed. After a couple of warning signs from BBH on the counter, they took their chance in what seemed to be the last second of the game (95th Minute), looked clearly offside which many spectators seemed to agree, obvious call, but Fender took his chance and completed his hat trick to snatch all 3 points. 5-4 FT

Never led in the game and maybe on the strength of that, BBH will feel just. But we can’t help that feel our own decisions and problems along with some calls that really didn’t go our way, coinciding with getting level 10 minutes to go and really looked like going on to win the game, a really gutting feeling.

I suppose the best bit about this league is that we can get back in action and try and correct it as quick as pos- sible with our next game on Tuesday night. We must take every positives we can from the game though, 4 goals away from home is big considering we didn’t know where the goals would come from after the opening 3 games. Welcomed return for players improving the squad depth and even the completion for starting places. And there is still a very long season to be played.

We host Eastbourne Town at East Grinstead FC on Tuesday evening, whom are currently 3 points above us, and from what I gather, have promotion bid ambitions. A much improved performance from the one at Raynes Park Vale, and hopefully we’ll get ourselves over the line on Tuesday to really get us into a winning habit.

Thanks for all the travelled support and hope to see you all in full voice on Tuesday Night, Up The Lingers

CLUB HISTORY

Lingfield FC was formed in 1893, initially competing in the now defunct Edenbridge & District League for the first 20 years of its history. Throughout virtually all their history the club has re- tained its distinctive red and yellow colours, albeit in a variety of guises. After much success in junior and local intermediate football the club applied to join the Sussex County League (and senior football) in 1980, but were turned down after the ground was deemed inadequate. However, Lingfield had more success with the Combined Counties League, which they joined the following season (1980/81). In 1981/82 Lingfield finished as runners-up in Division Two of the Eastern Division. Lingfield installed floodlights for the first time in 1983 and they were christened with a match on 2nd March against Brighton, a game that drew a crowd of 1,200. With floodlights in place, the club was finally accepted into Division Two of the County League, with the promise of less traveling and more local derbies to look forward to. After three seasons however, they were relegated to Division Three, and intermediate football once more. In 1993/94 Lingfield returned to senior football as runners-up to Bosham, but it proved to be a brief return, with relegation following the next season. In 1997/98 however, the club was promoted once more, this time as champions of Division Three, but again struggled to maintain senior status. In 2000 they finished bottom but avoided the drop, but were not as lucky with an identical finish the following year. 2001/02 saw Lingfield close to dropping out of the League altogether after they finished bottom of Division Three, only to be saved by the merger of Ansty Rangers and St. Francis Hospital to form St. Francis Rangers. The following two seasons however, saw a steady improvement, finishing 3rd in the table (albeit 8 points behind second-placed Bexhill United) in 2004/05. The club also reached the final of the Division 3 Challenge Cup, but lost 1-3 to Rustington. In 2005/06 the Club fulfilled its promise of the previous season by going one better and returning to senior football after an absence of five years as runners-up to champions Peacehaven & Telscombe. Lingfield finished five points clear of third-placed Rustington, but the West Sussex club was once again to prove their nemesis in the Challenge Cup, beating Lingfield 12-11 on penalties af- ter the two sides had drawn 1-1 in normal time. Astonishingly, the shoot-out saw no fewer than 32 spot kicks taken! In 2006/07 the club finished in 10th position but in 2007/08 under manager Steve Perkins Jnr, se- cured promotion to Division 1 for the first time in their history by finishing as runners-up to East Grinstead Town. In their first season in Div 1 in season 2008/09 the club finished in a highly respectable 8th position, under manager Steve Perkins Jnr. In 2009-10 season Lingfield finished in 10th position in Div 1 In 2010-11 season Lingfield finished in 11th position in Div 1 In 2011-12 season Lingfield finished in 7th position in Div 1 In 2012-13 season Lingfield finished in 6th position in Div 1 In 2013-14 season Lingfield finished in 15th position in Div 1 In 2014-15 season Lingfield finished in 17th position in the SECL In 2015-16 season Lingfield finished in 8th position in Div 1 In 2016-17 season Lingfield finished in 5th position in Div 1 In 2017-18 season Lingfield finished in 3rd position in Div 1 and promoted to the Prem Division

OUR VISITORS EASTBOURNE TOWN

EARLY HISTORY

Founded in 1881 as Devonshire Park Football Club, named after the original ground they played at (now the venue for the Eastbourne International Tennis tournament), they moved to their current home The Saffrons in 1886. A home they have shared since with Eastbourne Cricket Club and East- bourne Hockey Club. They changed their name to Eastbourne F.C. in 1889 as the town was being expanded after the railway arrived into the town. Although at the time they were not in a league, they competed in the Sussex Senior Cup reaching the final ten times between 1889 and 1903, win- ning eight times in that period.

They were founding members of the Southern Amateur Football League in 1907 in which they re- mained in until 1946, winning the Sussex Senior Cup three more times in that period. They briefly left in 1920 and was one of the founding teams of the Sussex County Football League, in which they stayed for one season and returned to the Southern Amateur Football League in 1921. 1946 saw them join the Corinthian League. In 1953, Eastbourne played their local rivals Hastings United in the FA Cup, although they lost 7–2 they recorded their record attendance of 7,378….

…..In 1963 the Corinthian League merged with the Athenian League Eastbourne were placed into the first division of the new league and stayed there for the first three seasons before relegation into the second division. In 1971, they changed their name from Eastbourne F.C. to the present name. The 1975–76 season saw Eastbourne reach the 5th round of the FA Vase. During the same season they nearly amalgamated with league rivals Eastbourne United but opted to re-join the Sussex County League.

SUSSEX COUNTY LEAGUE AND ISTHMIAN LEAGUE

Unable to continue in the Athenian League, due to falling attendances, they joined the Sussex County League in 1976. Their first season in the new league was successful, winning the Division 1 title. They came close to the title again in the 1984/85 and 1985/86 seasons, finishing third on both occasions. In 2001 they were relegated into Division 2 after 25 years. They did not manage to gain an immediate promotion back in the following season, but achieved a return to Division 1 at the end of the 2002– 03 season after finishing in second place. In the 2006–07 season, they became Sussex County League champions again. They secured the title on the last day of the season by defeating Oakwood 6–1 away from home to pip Whitehawk at the post, earning promotion to the Isthmian League Division One South. In 2014 they were relegated back to the Sussex County League. During the 2015-16 season they fin- ished runners up in the Sussex County League and reached the 3rd qualifying round in the FA Cup, the furthest they had reached in 47 years.
