The Commissioner for Public Appointments regulates the processes by which Ministers (including Welsh Ministers) make appointments to the boards of national and regional public bodies.

Applications are sought from candidates with the personal credibility and integrity to command the confidence of Ministers, senior officials, public appointees and the public. Successful candidates should have the ability to lead and to engage effectively with stakeholders; excellent judgement and the ability to assimilate a range of evidence and perspectives; and an understanding of operating in a regulatory regime. Chair - Low Pay Commission - closes Monday 8 February

The Low Pay Commission advises the Government on the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage through an annual report making recommendations on the future level of the minimum wage and related matters.

Applications are sought from candidates with the ability to lead strategically in a high profile environment. Successful candidates should have: an understanding of the relevance and issues surrounding the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage; the ability to analyse complex issues and financial information; and the capacity to work in a sensitive area under the pressure of close public scrutiny. An understanding of economics, particularly in relation to the labour market, would be an advantage.

The National Portrait Gallery aims ‘to promote through the medium of portraits the appreciation and understanding of the men and women who have made and are making British history and culture, and to promote the appreciation and understanding of portraiture in all media’. It holds the most extensive collection of portraits in the world.

Applications are sought from candidates with a sound understanding of the commercial / financial world and opportunities for increasing self-generated growth. Successful candidates should be able to raise funds for and act as an advocate for the Gallery; help the board provide advice and opinions to staff on the Gallery’s collection through the acquisition and commissions process and to contribute to future policy and strategic developments with innovative thinking; and an understanding of public life and the principles of good governance.

Members (x4) - The NHS Pay Review Body and Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration - closes Monday 8 February

The Secretary of State for Health is looking to appoint four new members to the NHS and Doctors’ and Dentists’ Pay Review Bodies, which provide independent advice and recommendations on the pay of NHS staff and doctors and dentists employed in the NHS, covering a total workforce of 1.6 million and a pay bill of almost £60 billion across the UK.

The Review Body on Doctors’ and Dentists’ Remuneration is seeking an economist member, a member representing and a member representing Northern Ireland. The NHS Pay Review Body is also seeking one member representing Northern Ireland.

Applications are sought from candidates with the ability to think strategically and to exercise judgement on complex and sensitive issues, along with the ability to analyse and interpret detailed information. Candidates applying for the economist post must also be able to demonstrate a record of achievement as an economist with the ability to apply expertise to labour market issues. Those applying for the posts representing Scotland or Northern Ireland must be able to demonstrate experience in a devolved context or knowledge of the public sector workforce in the respective country.

Natural England plays an important role as the Government’s adviser for the natural environment, helping to protect England’s nature and landscapes for people to enjoy and for the services they provide.

Successful candidates should have: a demonstrable ability to see the bigger picture; experience of driving forward substantial change; and a collaborative style which commands the confidence of Ministers, fellow Board members and other senior figures as well as a wide range of stakeholders and be an excellent ambassador for Natural England. To complement the skills of existing Board members, applicants must also have knowledge and expertise in a scientific field relevant to the work of Natural England, such as the natural and/or ecological/environmental/marine sciences.

Member - The Social Security Advisory Committee - closes Friday 12 February

The Social Security Advisory Committee’s remit is to provide independent advice to the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. It is also responsible for mandatory pre-legislative scrutiny of most DWP proposals for secondary legislation relating to social security matters.

Applications are sought from candidates with an excellent understanding of the objectives of, current thinking on and issues affecting welfare reform. Successful candidates should have the ability to understand and analyse the details of complex proposals and evaluate and advise objectively on the basis of that analysis; and a deep understanding of the political and financial context in which the social security system operates and the Committee’s advisory role.

It is desirable for candidates to have detailed knowledge of social security law; an understanding of the connections and interactions between the tax, tax credit and social security systems; current knowledge of issues relating to the benefits system and related policy areas in Wales; an understanding of the needs of chronically sick and disabled people; experience of the issues affecting the interest of employees; and expertise in addressing the challenges of effective communication with large and diverse customer groups.

Ofsted is the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills. They inspect and regulate services that care for children and young people and services providing education and skills for learners of all ages.

Applications are sought from candidates with a proven ability to work at Board level with knowledge of how to add value as a Non-Executive Director. Successful candidates should have strong analytical skills; a sound understanding and experience of strategic and financial planning; a commitment to Ofsted as an inspector and regulator and Ofsted’s role in improving standards in education, children’s services and skills; and experience of driving and delivery change and improvements in a fast moving environment. For one role candidates should have a demonstrate either a significant senior-level finance background or a senior leadership (Chief Executive-level) background. Experience of early-years education experience and further years experience is beneficial for all roles.

Royal Botanic Garden Kew - Trustee Royal Botanic Garden Kew is an internationally important botanical research and education institution, it employs 750 staff. The organisation manages botanic gardens at Kew in Richmond upon Thames in southwest and at Wakehurst Place, a National Trust property in Sussex which is home to an internationally important Millennium Seed Bank. The Seed Bank is also the site of multiple research projects and international partnerships with at least 80 countries. Kew also operates, jointly with the , Bedgebury Pinetum in Kent, specialising in growing conifers.
