It is extremely important to experience a totally different world from what you are used to. This is the prime time to travel and learn. We are still young and being shaped by our experiences so it’s important to take advantage of the opportunities that are available. On your exchange you will try new foods, make lifetime friends, learn to survive on your own, experience a new culture, and see new places you have always hoped to see. Since I left Canada, I have become more proud of it. I loved answering all the questions by my classmates about what my life back home is like. At the same time it was extremely important for me to become as familiar with the Indian way of life once I arrived. I chose to live with Indian roommates who taught me about cooking, fashion, festivals, and cultural norms and became as involved in my college as possible. I think I have become a more well rounded global citizen because I have completely adapted to a new way of living while still maintaining my Canadian roots.

University Students’ Council Clubs and Associations www.usc.uwo.ca/westernclubs You’ve probably been told that the best way to get the most out of your university experience is to get involved. It’s good advice – and with nearly 200 student clubs Western makes it easy! From Amnesty International and Free the Children, to Hip Hop and Yoga, if you’ve got a passion, we’ve got a club. The easiest way to find the right fit is during the annual Clubs Week showcase, held each year in September.

Over the last four years, I’ve been involved at Western, working as residence staff, Free the Children, the Sustainability Committee, volunteering with Alternative Spring Break and joining a handful of intramural sports and clubs. I’ve gained tons of new friends, an appreciation for people from different cultures, more self-confidence and self- esteem and a greater love for my school.

+ Kaiz Alarakyia Hometown: Calgary, AB Program: Dual degree in Chemical Engineering and Honors Business Administration For me, Western had one of the most progressive engineering programs in Canada, and it houses the top business school in the world. It has an extremely talented and diverse faculty, but it offered so much more than academics. Western has consistently ranked the highest in providing the best student experience because of three main reasons: 1) the opportunities it provides students to thrive, develop and succeed 2) a strikingly beautiful campus and comfortable and welcoming residences and 3) the spirit and sense of community that every Western student feels. Western is a place of possibilities, and becoming involved offers the opportunity to take advantage of some of these.

Shalini Krishnan Faculty of Health Sciences Hometown: Toronto, ON Exchange location: Melbourne, Australia

The most memorable part of my experience was the relationships I made. As soon as friendships started forming, I began to see Melbourne as my home. Whenever any of us had any problems, we only had each other to rely on. Due to the time difference, we couldn’t even contact our parents most of the time. It really taught me to be independent and showed me I am stronger than I thought. This experience taught me to really be grateful for all the opportunities that Western has to offer. Most people with whom I talk to about my exchange always tell me they wish they had had an opportunity like this when they were in school. Anderson, a voice major, said performance skills can lead anywhere. Western’s Faculty of Science will prepare you for the career you want to pursue while providing you with the flexibility to tailor your degree to suit your own interests.

Awards Western Science has 22 Canada Research Chairs, 20 members of the Royal Society of Canada, four NSERC Industrial Research Chairs, four members of the Order of Canada, 17 OCUFA Teaching Award recipients and five 3M National Teaching Award recipients.

Academic Support There are many levels of academic support in the Faculty. Academic counseling in the Dean’s Office allows students to enquire about general academic performance concerns or program and degree choice. Departmental counselors provide advice on: progression and course selection, permission to take a course without a prerequisite, or problems with course registration. Professors have office hours for consulting students about materials presented in lectures; teaching assistants are available and provide help in laboratories and tutorial sessions.

Career Opportunities Graduates have pursued successful careers in industry, business and education as well as scientific and medical research. Even if students have no clear idea of what career they want to pursue, Science Career Services can help them explore their options. After their third year, students may participate in the Science Internship Program, which provides work experience in a position related to their studies. Interns work for a of period of 8-16 months then return to Western to complete their fourth year.

Newly renovated state-of-the-art teaching laboratories with breakout tutorial rooms and study spaces highlight the third year Physiology and Pharmacology student experience. Earth Sciences has a $5-million suite of Geosciences visualization and simulation platforms. Students who enter a senior thesis project under the mentorship of a faculty member may benefit from shared facilities such as our well-equipped electronics and machine shops, Nanofabrication facility, and SHARCNet computer cluster.

How students learn Our faculty and teaching assistants continually search for better ways to teach. They explore promising techniques in the laboratories and find ways to incorporate innovative approaches in the classroom. In 2005, Western was the largest campus in Canada to introduce clicker technology into the classroom. It has since taken off as a method to promote peer discussion within groups. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning environments in the BMSc program. For example, in Medical Sciences 4,200 students complete interactive online learning modules outside of class and spend class time working on case studies, patient profiles and literature analysis. Other online opportunities exist for a number of Basic Medical Science courses such as Systemic Human Anatomy, Mammalian Histology, Introductory Pharmacology and Integrative Neuroscience. Outside of the classroom, Western offers numerous field schools in Biology and the Earth Sciences and talented upper-year students have the opportunity to work on research projects during the summer, in the laboratory or in the field. Through the International Exchange Program, students can add a different point of view for their studies.

Maia Hoeberechts, BSc’99, PhD’10

Aboard the R/V Thompson, Hoeberechts floats at the front lines of protecting North America’s western shores from natural disasters like tsunamis.

As a member of NEPTUNE Canada’s research team, the Western alumna helps gather data from underwater observatories operating at depths up to 2,660 metres below the surface. That information is then shared with researchers across the globe to help answer what Hoeberechts calls “big questions.” And thanks to Western Computer Science, Hoeberechts knows ‘big answers’ will soon follow.
