Message from the Chairman

Welcome to Bishop Auckland FC tonight, a team steeped in history and from which a host of ex-players have made it into the professional ranks. Most notable in my opinion being the great Bob Paisley one of the game’s best ever managers.

Bishops have had a slow start to the season, but I'm sure they will pick up shortly (as long as it's not tonight ha ha).

Last Saturday we got another valuable 3 points in what was another impressive performance following a slow start in the 1st half. Once Sean Taylor had equalised, however, we really took the game to Ashington.

A great day and rounded off with the wonderful hospitality we always receive from our close friends at the Colliers.

In respect to the Sporting Juniors, I had a great meeting with their committee on Sunday evening and I'm sure there is a huge opportunity in working closely together. They have a superb working group which given the right platform could take the club to the best in the area. (watch this space).

Enjoy the match and see you in the bar.

Taylor made victory for Town Morpeth Town 3-1 West Allotment Celtic Morpeth Town kept the pressure on league leaders Shildon with a comprehensive 3-1 win over West Allotment Celtic at Craik Park. A thunderbolt from James Novak followed by a Keith Graydon goal gave Town a 2-0 goal lead at the half, Michael Chilton also missing a penalty the first period. More dominance in the second half saw Sean Taylor curl in a beautifully placed free-kick before a late consolation from former Highwaymen striker Ian Lee scuppered the clean sheet for Nick Gray’s side. Town made four changes from the team that faced Bedlington on Tuesday night. Karl Dryden, Lee McAndrew, Chris Swailes and Jordan Fry came into the side, with Chris Jewels, Luke Carr, Niall Harrison and Jordan Nellis missing out. In what is becoming a habit, the Highwaymen started the game strongly and caused a number of problems for the visitors. A short corner saw Novak and Ben Sayer combine to find Taylor 12 yards out, his fizzing effort palmed over the bar by Celtic’s ‘keeper. On five minutes a fine flowing move allowed Graydon to take aim from the edge of the area, his shot was deflected wide by Chilton, who was standing in an offside position. The deserved opener finally came in the eighth minute as a number of Town players combined from a right wing throw-in to pick out Graydon on halfway. He switched the ball to the left with Novak who composed himself 35 yards out and rifled a left footed firecracker over the ‘keepers head and into the roof of the net, a spectacular strike. After ten minutes of calm, Morpeth upped gears once more and double their lead in the 18th minute. Fry dispossessed a West Allotment defender in midfield with a sliding challenge, the ball dropping to Sayer who picked out Taylor on the left. He cut inside, bringing two defenders with him creating space to backheel into the path of Graydon eight yards out who slotted home, via the boot of a sliding Celtic blocker. The visitors finally showed some attacking intent at 2-0 down, but still struggled to trouble Dryden, a long range effort from the visitors not troubling the Town ‘keeper. The patient Morpeth build up play continued to wear out Celtic, Lee McAndrew breaking down the left and crossing for Chilton six yards out, but he could only guide his header into the ‘keepers arms.

A third was almost added on 29 minutes, Novak’s right wing corner was met at the near post by Fry, but his header flew wide of the left upright. Sayer was next to go close, he was left unmarked at the back post from a Chris Swailes diagonal ball, but hit a tame effort straight at the ‘keepers legs. The Highwaymen were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time when the Celtic ‘keeper took down Taylor as he reached the six yard box. Chilton stepped up and hit a low effort to the ‘keeper left, the goalie getting a strong hand to the ball and pushing it wide. A through ball in injury time nearly allowed the visitors to half the deficit, but the West Allotment striker was unable to hit the target from close range. Seven minute into the second period, Novak was fouled on the edge of the area, just to the right of centre 22 yards out. Taylor stepped up and curled a voluptuous effort into the top right hand corner of the net. From then on, Morpeth slowed the game down and controlled the game for long periods, but rarely troubling the goal. The best effort another long range effort from Novak. As the game wore on, Morpeth began to threaten once again. Novak picked the ball up in defence and was allowed to run 60 yards before playing the ball inside to substitute Luke Carr who slid in Steven Anderson, the striker hitting his effort into the goalkeepers’ chest. A few minutes later Town were on the attack again, Taylor with a piercing run, beating 3 defenders before playing the ball out wide to McAndrew. The winger whipped a cross into the six yard box where Taylor headed wide. Chilton should have made it four with 10 minutes to go. Carr picked up the ball in the centre of the Celtic half. He slid the ball through the West Allotment backline into the path of Chilton who fired over from 12 yards out with just the ‘keeper to beat. With just second remaining in the game, former Morpeth Town striker Ian Lee peeled away at the back post, taking down a cross with his first touch before firing past Dryden for the consolation goal.

Some people wonder why the North East football fan is turning towards the non-league scene to get their football fix, this weekend showed why.

Both the North East’s sides were embarrassing this weekend. Newcastle United losing 2-1 at home to Watford and their Sunderland counterparts lost 2-0 away to Bournemouth. Both sides showing little resistance to team who are newly promoted. Utter garbage.

Fans are starting to turn away from St James’ Park and the and flooding in to Northern League grounds to see if their passion for the beautiful game can be restored.

You have to commend the likes of North Shields, who are building the club off the field as well as on it. This weekend saw what some describe as “El Coastico” which saw a bumper crowd of 861 witness Whitley Bay secure a 2-1 win over North Shields.

Through the Tyne Tunnel you’ll find South Shields, who are doing things a little differently but are raising the profile of the game at this level. The signing of Julio Arca has ignited the interest South of the river, but even before the marquee signing crowds were flocking to “Mariners Park.”

I’d like to think we at Morpeth are raising the profile of the game. A new website has been launched that will hopefully add to our fans experience of the club.

Highwaymen TV is getting high praise from fans and fellow media teams across the league, and our new programme has also had great comments, hopefully I can keep the standard up.

Anyway, I should probably mention the on field stuff, Nick, Dave, Steve, Miles and co. are doing a fantastic job, the brand of football and the results we are achieving are incredible, bear in mind our highest ever finish is 6th place. The foundation is in place to push on this season.

Since the last programme we have beaten West Allotment Celtic 3-1 and Ashington 3-1, again most would say we aren’t at our best still, when things click we could give a side a hiding, but for now, wins will have to do.

Cheers Stuart Dick

Taylor made victory for Town Ashington 1-3 Morpeth Town Sean Taylor was the hero for Morpeth Town as they came from a goal down to defeat local rivals Ashington at Woodhorn Lane on Saturday afternoon. Former Town midfielder Paul Dunn had given the Colliers a 1-0 lead after 3 minutes in a half that the home side thoroughly dominated. Roles were reversed after the break with the Highwaymen bossing proceeding, Taylor netting a second half hat-trick to secure three points and close the gap to Shildon at the top of the Northern League Division One. Manager Nicky Gray was forced into one change from the side that beat West Allotment Celtic a week ago, Niall Harrison replacing Karl Dryden in the Morpeth goal. But it was a disastrous start for the visitors as the Colliers opened the scoring in the third minute of the game. After failing to clear a corner, the ball fell to Kyle Downey whose 25 yard effort fell kindly in to the path of Dunn who turned sharply before firing low past Harrison from 12 yards out. The lead was almost doubled two minutes later, Chris Moore found Andrew Johnson from the left, Johnson playing a neat one-two with Michael Bell before hitting an effort from just inside the area off the crossbar and over. The Highwaymen did not help themselves in the opening 10 minutes, unable to string passes together and losing possession cheaply. With 8 minutes gone James Novak was dispossessed by Dylan Williamson who strode into the Morpeth penalty area, denied by an onrushing Harrison. The rebound fell onto the head of Moore who guided an effort just wide. Ashington were fully in the ascendency and it looked a matter of time before they would double their lead. Williamson broke down the right flank below firing a cross low through the six yard box, a diving Shaun Henderson denying Moore a tap-in. Morpeth chances were few and far between, but a Novak corner from the right caused the home side a problem, Michael Chilton left unmarked in the 6 yard box, the striker unable to make any contact with the cross. With 20 minutes gone the Colliers went close once more. Ben Christensen over hitting his right wing cross, Johnson with the pull-back to Moore, who couldn’t hit the target from an acute angle. At the other end some good play down the left from Lee McAndrew provided a chance for Taylor to level, but he skied his effort from inside the Ashington 18-yard box

Another Novak corner troubled the home side on the half hour mark, Chris Swailes heading wide at the back post. At this point Morpeth began to come into the game for the first time, Novak again providing an excellent cross from the left this time, but just over the head of Jordan Fry 5 yards out. Ben Sayer went close on 32 minutes, Shaun Henderson’s diagonal ball finding him unmarked fifteen yards out, but he could only hit the side netting with his header. With just a few minute remaining in the first period, the host went close to adding to their lead. Another corner was only half-cleared, again Downey picking the ball up on the edge of the area, powering an effort millimetres over the crossbar. 1-0 the half-time scoreline, which flattered Town. As disappointing as the first half was from a Morpeth perspective, the second showed why the Highwaymen are flying in the league. It took just four minutes for Taylor to open his account for the day. McAndrew was played in down the right by Keith Graydon, tricking his way past Paul Weldon to the by-line. He clipped a cross towards the penalty spot where Taylor was waiting to head home past Conor Grant. Three minute late the Highwaymen almost took the lead with a carbon copy of their first. This time it was Fry who broke down the right before crossing to Chilton, the striker unable to test the ‘keeper with his diving header. In the 62nd minute Morpeth’s second half pressure finally told as the visitors took the lead with a stunning strike. Sayer picked up the ball on left wing. He could inside onto his right before finding Taylor 35 yards out. The striker took a touch before pile-driving his long range effort into Grant’s top left hand corner. The Ashington goal continued to come under siege at 2-1, Sayer combining well with Novak and Taylor to find space in the penalty area, his effort was destined for the bottom left hand corner, Grant sticking a hand out at the last second to turn round the post. Taylor completed his hat-trick in the 76th minute, Novak winning the ball on halfway, finding Chilton on the left who in turn slid the ball to Taylor who glided past Matthew Grieve and prodded the ball into the bottom right hand corner under the left hand of Grant. Going 2 goals down seemed to breathe new life into Ashington, but the final quarter hour was played out without any real incident other than a handball shout against David Hiftle in injury time, waived away by the referee. Three vital points for the Highwaymen, who now turn attention to the league cup with a First Round tie against Bishop Auckland on Wednesday Evening at Craik Park.

Managers Message: Nick Gray and Dave Malone

We knew it was going to be a tough game against Ashington, they came out of the traps early and we didn’t get going in the first 45 minutes. I was pleased to get in at half-time 1-0 down.

We told the lads at the break to raise the energy levels and get back to what we’ve been doing all season, and they did exactly that. Once we got the eauliser there was only one team going to go on and win, we were fitter, stronger in the second period to pick up the three points.

So things are going alright in the league, not getting carried away, but we are picking up points which is the main thing. I hope the fan are enjoying the football we are paying at the moment.

On to today, we said this year our target was progression, and we achieve that by finishing above eighth and winning a cup. We played Bishop Auckland in the first game of the season, we know how tough a game it will be as they’ve had some great results, as well as some indifferent ones.

On their day they are just as good as anyone in the Northern League, We’ll have to be at our best to advance to the next round. Yours in Sport Nicky Gray

19th September League Round-Up (By Ray Simpson) Bishop Auckland bounced back from their 7-0 mauling in midweek to win 3-1 at Newcastle Benfield in the Ebac Northern League First Division on Saturday and give new boss Steve Riley victory in his first game in charge.

Riley is now manager in his own right after previous joint-manager David Bayles quit last week, and he couldn’t have asked for a better start.

Paul Brayson put Benfield into the lead from a Chris Youlden assist, but Bishops levelled on 29 minutes when Andy Johnson set up David Palmer to blast into the net. They went in front 9 minutes later when Ian Ward’s header from a Glen Lane went in off Andy Johnson, and they made sure of the points when Adam Nicholls’ shot was parried, and Lane scored from the rebound.

Leaders Shildon beat West Auckland Town 4-0 in their local derby, scoring all the goals in the first half. Billy Greulich-Smith headed them in front, then Paul Connor headed a second.

West then made two substitutions in a tactical change, but to no avail as Bobby Moore curled home a third. Moore then cracked in the fourth before half-time. Moore missed a couple of chances for his hat-trick as Shildon dominated.

Champions Marske United are third after they came back from a goal down to beat North Shields 2-1 at Mount Pleasant. Shields took the lead on 33 minutes when Dean Holmes, but Marske equalised when Glen Butterworth scored with a 20-yarder.

Jamie Owens, last season’s top scorer, got the winner when he scored from a Chris Emms corner in the second half.

Sunderland RCA are now eighth after they beat Penrith 3-2. The Cumbrians took a half-time lead with a penalty by Jordan Little, but Clayton Davis equalised with a good goal for RCA.

Penrith’s Willie Paul put an Adam Drysdale header into his own goal to give RCA the lead, but Penrith equalised again through Jonathan. But in the last

minute, James Armstrong was brought down, and Colin Larkin coolly scored the winner from the spot.

Seaham Red Star recovered from their mauling by Marske in midweek by drawing 1-1 with Ashington. Michael Bell put Ashington into the lead, but Darren Reay equalised.

Bedlington Terriers won their second game of the season, beating Durham City 2-1. Durham’s new signing Jason Blackburn scored from close range to give them a half-time lead, but Bedlington equalised when Kallum McGlen scored from a corner after Durham keeper Thomas Flynn dropped the ball. Bedlington’s Liam Hudson got the winner with just 2 minutes left when he fired over the keeper.

Morpeth Town are second in the table after beating West Allotment Celtic 3-1. Morpeth took the lead with a 25-yarder by James Novak, then Sean Taylor set up Keith Graydon to score the second before Michael Chilton missed a penalty. In the second half, Taylor scored from a free kick for 3-0.Ian Lee scored a late consolation for Allotment.

In the Second Division, Julio Arca’s debut goal wasn’t enough to stop much-fancied South Shields faltering against bottom of the table Stokesley SC, who collected their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw.

Shields missed a string of chances before Arca headed them into the lead on 63 minutes but Stokesley, who had lost their previous nine games, grabbed a point with a deflected shot by Josh Chambers.

Brandon United are now unbeaten in five league games following a remarkable 6-5 win at Thornaby when they were 5-2 down on the hour- mark. Kieran Edwards put Thornaby into the lead with a penalty, then on the half-hour James Ellis equalised.

Matthew Robinson, Nathan Steel and Theo Furness put Thornaby 4-1 up at half-time, and even though Ellis pulled one back on 56 minutes, Steel put Thornaby 5-2 up.

But then the fightback started. Ellis scored twice in the space of 4 minutes, teenage sub Ryan Johnson levelled on76 minutes, and got the winner in the last minute.

Chester-le-Street are now top of the table after they won 1-0 at Ryton & Crawcrook, Scott Heslop scoring the goal to give him ten league goals this season.

Team Northumbria are second thanks to a 4-0 victory at Esh Winning. David Dormand (2), Dan O’Reilly and Louis Storey scored their goals.

The previous leaders Darlington RA were held to a 1-1 draw by Willington. Adam Burnicle gave Willington the lead until Harvey Saunders equalised with his seventh goal in three games.

Northallerton Town were the top scorers of the day in the division, hammering Crook Town 7-0 at the Millfield. Stuart Owen started the rout with a penalty, then Damon Reakes made it 2-0 by half-time.

It was one way traffic in the second half, with Reakes, Fred Woodhouse (2), Andy Ramsbottom and Aaron Ramsbottom scoring further goals.

Easington’s promising start continued when they beat Hebburn Town 5-1 at Welfare Park. Aidan Heywood (2), Shaun Smith, David Leight and Gary Rogers all scored for Easington, with Shaun Reay replying. Easington are now up to sixth in the table.

Tow Law Town’s four game unbeaten run came to an end when they were beaten 3-1 at home by Ryhope CW. Nathan O’Neill and Josh Home-Jackson put Ryhope 2-0 up, before Ethan Payne pulled a goal back. Jack Pounder scored Ryhope’s third.

Billingham Synthonia gave themselves a lift with a 3-0 away win at Heaton Stannington. Veteran Jamie Clarke put Synners into the lead from a free-kick after 21 minutes, then Jamie Barton ran through and scored at the second attempt before half-time.

Heaton had Joe Wear dismissed for a professional foul, and Mattie Osmond scored the third from the free kick. Heaton also had Jonathan Wright sent-off for a professional foul.

Billingham Town beat high-flying Whickham 1-0 at Bedford Terrace, thanks to a goal by Shaun Ross in the second half. Birtley Town, who only had the bare eleven, came back from three goals down to draw 3-3 at Alnwick Town. The home side led with goals by Brad McClelland (2) and Robert Baker, but Birtley hit back with strikes by Matthew Soulsby, Jonathan Yip and Mark Bailes.

Captains Message:

I will start by giving Ashington credit by the way they started the game they never game us a minute, and justifiably went 1-0 up, but you could argue they should have been 2 or 3 up after the first ten minutes.

We regrouped second half and we came out all guns blazing, no more than Sean Taylor who was unreal in the second half and grabbed himself a cracking hatrick.

His second goal is a contender for goal of the month, well it was until Jess Havelock scored from 45 yards yesterday for Newcastle United Women, must try harder Tayls.

Anyway, enjoy tonight’s cup game, I’ll enjoy my rest today seeing as I’m suspended.
