Grenville Place, Bideford

The Old Marketplace, Andoversford (Specification and finishes will vary at Whitley Meadows to that shown). We’ve lovingly rehomed: Living in harmony

Being on the edge of beautiful countryside, Newland Homes has sensitively balanced the creation of a new community whilst supporting and protecting the existing ecology. 28 Greater Crested Newts Before building commenced, our ecologists reported on the site’s eco-system and recommended how to protect incumbent species, and advised to our obligations from both a legal and moral perspective. Under the watchful eye of our ecologists’ guidance, our newt licence allowed us to progress a re-homing programme for newts found within the site. This began way before development commenced with a series of newt friendly traps installed around the development. Left in place for 45 days, traps were checked throughout the day 4 Smooth Newts and any ecology found was transferred to a new home in open fields behind the site. If the temperature dropped, traps were closed at night. At day 40, traps needed to remain clear for 5 consecutive days. Should a newt be found, the five day count began again. Once clear, a finger tip search of the site was completed, which upon the all clear allowed works to commence, knowing all the necessary steps to safeguard the natural habitat have been taken.

7 Grass Snakes Fences and tree protection A specially designed low level fence with protective membrane is erected around the perimeter of the site while construction is in progress. This helps prevent wildlife coming on to the site and being trapped whilst works are underway. Protection fences are also utilised to safeguard 137 Toads trees and assist in protecting any dormice that may be around, although our ecologists found no evidence of dormice, badgers or bats.

1 Frog Newt gullies If newts return to Whitley Meadows once it’s completed, specially designed kerbs with ‘newt gullies’ are used to prevent them falling in to storm drains. Sustainable design
