Royals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ Baltimore Orioles - Sunday, April 27, 2014 This & That KC CHALLENGE-LESS OF LATE--The Royals played their ninth-straight game without a replay challenge from either them or their opponent last night...the only thing resembling a review in the last nine days was instituted by the umpires themselves Thursday when they chose to see if catcher Brett Hayes had given Asdrubal Cabrera a path to the plate before tagging him out to end the first inning...KC was involved in 10 replay challenges in the first 14 games of the year, including 8 in its first 8 games...Ned Yost is 2-2 in replay challenges, while opposing managers are 3-3 under the new system...to review, each gets a challenge and for the first six innings and if he challenges correctly, he’ll receive another...calls will be defined as either a) Confirmed; b) Stands or C) Overturned.

SCHEDULE WILL BALANCE OUT--KC will play its 15th road contest this afternoon, tied with the for the most in the American League... by the time Kansas City returns to Kauffman Stadium on May 13 to host the , the club will have played 22 of its first 37 games away from home...the schedule will begin to turn when the Royals return from Seattle on May 11, as they’ll play at “The K” for 12 of 15 games from May 13-28 and 20 of 29 thru June 11...in fact, from May 13 until June 29, Kansas City will be at home for 29 of 45 games.

MISSING MAGIC NUMBER--The Royals could not reach their magic number of four runs last night, falling to 0-12 in games which they score three or less... KC is 11-0 when the team plates at least four...last season, the club was an amazing 51 games over .500 when reaching the four-run threshold with a 64-13 mark, while going 22-63 with three runs or fewer.

EXTRA-INNING HEARTBREAK--Kansas City played its third extra-inning game of the season last night, falling 3-2 in 10 innings...all three of the Royals’ games featuring bonus baseball have been on the road as KC has gone 1-2 in those contests...last year, KC went 11-4 in extra-inning affairs last season, including 6-1 on the road...the club’s 11 victories after the ninth inning led the American League, one more than Boston’s 10.

SALVY BOUNCES BACK--All-Star catcher Salvador Perez has endured his struggles at the plate recently...however, last night, he seemed to put it behind him, going 3-for-5 with a double for his first multi-hit game since April 8, when he was 2-for-3 vs. the Rays...Salvy opened the year on fire at the plate, recording 4 hits on Opening Day in Detroit, and hitting .375 (12-for-32) with 5 doubles and 8 walks in his first 11 games...however, since April 15, he’s hitting .146 (7-for- 48) and has not drawn a walk in his last 15 games.

CAN’T GET IT TO HOLLY--The Royals could not take the lead in the late innings last night and get All-Star closer Greg Holland into the game...over the last week, Holland has been missing in action recently, making just one appearance – here Friday in a non-save situation...Holland, who earned his first trip to the All-Star Game last year, has made good on 46 of his last 47 save opportunities, dating back to May 30 of last season...since that day, Holland has 6 more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 42) and has allowed just 6 earned runs in 59.0 innings for an 0.92 ERA, holding opposing hitters to a .156 average...he’s also recorded 91 strikeouts in his last 58.0 innings, for an A.L.-best 13.88 strikeouts per 9.0 IP.

NED IN HIS FOURTH FULL SEASON--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is 295-341 since he was named to his position on May 13, 2010...he recently passed John Wathan (287) and Hal McRae (286) to move into fourth on KC’s all-time wins list...he is 22 wins shy of catching Tony Muser, who is third with 317 victories...Yost, who managed six seasons in Milwaukee (2003-08), is 752-843 all-time as a Major League skipper.

RECORD NUMBER ON THE TUBE--The seventh season of the Royals on Fox Sports Kansas City will feature a record 150 telecasts in High Definition, up from the 140 a season ago...Ryan Lefebvre will anchor the booth for 95 telecasts and Steve Physioc will call the play-by-play for 55 games...Rex Hudler will work all 150 games as the analyst...the pre and post-game shows, Royals Live, are hosted by Joel Goldberg, who will be joined at every home game and several road affairs by Royals’ Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery...the Royals will also have two telecasts in the national Saturday window on the FOX Network and four other telecasts on the new FS1...KC has already been notified of at least one ESPN national game on June 2 from St. Louis.

GOLD THE COLOR OF 2013--The Royals had a franchise first last season with three players earning Rawlings Gold Gloves for their defensive prowess... Alex Gordon latched onto his third in as many years as a leftfielder, while catcher Salvador Perez and first baseman Eric Hosmer each brought home the gold... Hosmer’s win was a first for a KC first sacker, while Perez is the first receiver to get the gold since Bob Boone in 1989, the last multi-gold season for the Royals.
