Well, it’s another New Year for the Society and what an exciting and busy one it’s shaping up to be! We ended 2017 on a high note with a great AGM in November and a wonderful Christmas party at director, Bill Hurley’s iconic Montreal establishment on December 7th. A warm and relaxed celebration, it was a great closeout to my first year as your president.

In the end, Montreal’s 375th and ’s 150th anniversary year was also a terrific year for the Society, with all of our NUACHT events featuring exciting new aspects and locations, and terrific attendance overall. Thanks again to all the volunteers who put in literally hundreds of hours to make them possible. Let’s hope that all of our events this year are as well attended and successful. These events serve to highlight the multi-faceted nature of our Irish community to Montreal as a whole. It’s always so important to also remember that the net proceeds from our events - the Ball, Luncheon and Golf Tournament - are given away to an assortment of worthy Montreal charities and Irish educational, cultural and sporting not-for-profits.

This year, you’ll be seeing a series of testimonial articles in Nuacht from various grants and sponsorship recipients who will testify as to how crucial these monies are to their own mission, services and operations.

Folks, by attending our events, you’re not only celebrating our heritage, our community, making new friends and having some fun but you’re also helping others as a direct result. I’d therefore also like to say a personal thank you to all of our members, supporters, sponsors and friends for helping us to continue to function not only as a charity but also as an integral part of the Montreal Irish landscape.

So - what’s in line for this spring? Shortly, in February, you’ll receive our Strategic Planning questionnaire. This survey will help to guide our efforts into the future. Please share this questionnaire with interested family and friends and take the few minutes needed to complete the survey. We need and truly appreciate your input and guidance. Thanks to Kim Hogan, Christie Brown and the whole planning committee for this huge effort. You can look forward to hearing a full report of the results at our general meeting in June.

On March 2nd, we are proud to celebrate our 161st annual Charity Ball at the Marriott Château Champlain, followed by our 185th annual Charity Luncheon at the Plaza Ballroom of the EVO centre on Friday, March 16th. These two events are always great fun and we are very fortunate yet again to have a prominent patron, guests of honour and guest speakers at both events. Please read the full details in the articles in this issue. Although extremely well attended, we’d love to see more members at both events. If, unfortunately, you are unable to attend either event, please donate generously to this NUACHT, Community Newsletter of St. Patrick’s Society of Montreal year’s Patron’s Fund at spsmtl.com. Anyone attending the Ball Production: Martina Branagan (Editor), and donating to the Patron’s Fund is invited to join us at the Dave Dubeau, Kim Hogan, Scott Phelan, VIP reception beforehand. All donations will receive a full tax and Ken Quinn (Editorial Board) receipt as well and again will help us to support so many others. By Scott Phelan, President, St. Patrick’s Society and photos by Ken Quinn On Saturday, February 3rd, the United Irish Societies held their 63rd Queen Selection evening to choose the Queen and her Court for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN! By Jim McDermott April 10th is coming up soon and on that historic day, in 1998, the Good Friday Agreement was signed, sealed and delivered. During those prodigious times, the majority of the people in Ireland responded jubilantly, with praise and optimism. The horror of the North’s Troubles had run its course, and so began the process of reconciliation.

In celebration of those remarkable times, a venturesome trio from Montreal’s Irish community, surreptitiously hoisted the flag of Ireland as a mark of great honour and devotion. They went out on a limb and scaled our city’s

NUACHT iconic Cross atop Mount Royal.

On that day, I particularly remember gazing up towards the high perched structure from where I was, on Park Ave. “What a sight,” I thought to myself, my country’s flag mysteriously silhouetted against the Cross’s lustrous structure and looking majestic.

The gentle, fluttering, vibrant buntings of Orange and Green, both literally and figuratively represent Unionism and Nationalism. This was a unique moment and a great opportunity to photograph that special tribute which was inspired because of those amazing events that took place during the signing of the Northern Ireland Peace Agreement. Those gallant members of the Irish community truly went to the dizzy height, displaying the flag and their grit.

Go tell it on the mountain over the hills and everywhere. April 10th, 1998 was a time to celebrate, a time to rejoice, a rare old time, when the flag of Ireland reigned over our city, in a flutter of grace, high above the swaying branches, filled with majestic leaves, and crowning every hillside tree for peace and liberty. A HISTORICAL ERROR By Leo Delaney, Jeanie Johnston Educational Foundation Inc. The revelation that 76,000 French Canadians, not 36,000, participated in the First World War, changes the history of that period dramatically. For decades, it was reported in the press and the history text books across Canada that only 36,000 enlisted in the Canadian forces, a fact used to denigrate the French Canadians reputation as to their support of the war effort. The Jeanie Johnston Educational Foundation, during its research for the latest schools’ program, in consultation with Historian, Jean Martin Ph.D., Department of Defence, Ottawa, found in his in-depth study of the records of the Canadian Forces, that the 36,000 figure as had been recorded and published was incorrect. See link: http://www.journal.forces.gc.ca/Vol17/no4/page47-eng.asp

The new lessons, created by Sam Allison B.Sc., MA. and his team, will take this revelation into the schools’ program, which has just completed the first module, integrated in the GeoHistory Map method, “French Canadians in World War I”. Students will learn the true facts of that moment in history. The GeoHistory application that uses Google maps is presently being tested in several schools of the Nine School Boards on the island of Montreal, with the goal to adapt the system as a teaching tool to improve their knowledge of History in Quebec and Canada. The new release of Version 2 of the GeoHistory Map will include Search capabilities, which will help teachers use the application in classroom settings. This will increase the historical data about historical facts and will propel this interactive format into all the schools in Quebec. The module “French Canadians in World War I” is completed and will shortly be followed by Trench Warfare in World War I, North American Explorers and the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. As the program is bilingual, it is now being introduced into the French milieu in Quebec and French schools outside Quebec.

PATRICK’S SOCIETY by Tony Cunningham Did you know that the oldest Canadian Gaelic sports organization is in Montreal!? The Montreal Shamrocks was established in 1948 and will celebrate its 70th anniversary this year, which you can read more about in this edition.

The Gaelic Athletic Association is one of the largest amateur sporting organizations in the world. The two main sports,

NUACHT Gaelic Football and Hurling, are the most popular in terms of participation, spectatorship and membership. The scope of this is reflected in the fact that there is a club situated in every single parish in Ireland. The status of the sports is strictly amateur, meaning no players are paid, even when the top games can attract crowds of over 80,000 people.

A grassroots organization, the Gaelic Athletics Club is very much community- oriented. The Montreal Shamrocks seek to promote these same values (which are also very much aligned with the values of St. Patrick’s Society) through Gaelic Football and Hurling. Examples of this can be seen in our current leagues where a number of traditional Irish neighborhoods in Montreal are represented.

In our Gaelic Football (men’s and women’s) league, we have the following teams: Gaels, Goose Village Black Rocks, Verdun Vikings, and Concordia Warriors.

And in our Hurling (Co-ed) league, you can see the following neighbourhoods represented: Pointe-St-Charles Cú Chulainn, St. Henri Harps, and NDG Na Fianna Rouges.

Being an amateur and community based sport means trying to keep costs down for our members as much as possible. This can be challenging in running two seasons (Winter and Summer), as well as three leagues (two Gaelic Football and one Hurling), purchasing equipment and travel costs for teams travelling to compete in Canada, the US, and Ireland; this is where the support of our partners becomes vital.

The continued support of St. Patrick’s Society has allowed us to keep our registration costs to a minimum. The amount of game-time, training sessions, and social activities available to Shamrocks’ members in contrast to the low cost of membership makes this one of the best offers in the city for those wanting to stay fit and have some fun! Specifically, a large part of the cost of renting out the Stinger Dome in NDG for our Winter Superleague is covered by the grant we receive from the Society. This has allowed us to grow massively in the last number of years, with 2017 seeing over 200 people play Gaelic Games in Montreal.

The Shamrocks regard St. Patrick’s Society as our community partner, and we welcome all members and supporters to come and try Gaelic Games. People of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join us. The majority of our members are currently Montreal locals who have never played (nor heard of!) either sports before trying them, with some even going on to represent Canada at the World Games in Ireland in 2016.

The Montreal Shamrocks would also like to thank all our partners for their continued support in helping us to promote these great sports in Montreal.

By Pat Short For probably the 43rd year in succession, young Montreal Irish dancers joined talented musicians at Sainte Anne’s Veteran’s Hospital to entertain Canadian War Veterans who are in care there. Groups of dancers toured the wards in the noon time and then, put on a great show for those who were able to come down to the theatre. This 72nd Anniversary Show may be the last as the hospital moves from Federal management to Provincial on April 1st of this year.

NUACHT Seventeen Montreal area dancers from The Bernadette Short Schools of Irish Dancing in Quebec are very hard at work drilling and preparing for the World Championships to be held in Glasgow, Scotland commencing on March 25th and continuing for a week. Each qualifier undertook a travel fundraising event such as a comedy night, art auction, mini-lotto, wine raffles and of course a “PUB NIGHT” to be held in St. Gabriel’s Church hall on Friday 23rd February, starting at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are available from Debbie Spencer at 514-769-5153.

The competition scene has been very quiet, and all the dancing teachers are welcoming new students and returning dancers for the 2018 campaign.

Owing to a misunderstanding, I omitted to give the Costello School full credit for the number of dancers they had in November’s Oireachtas. Casey’s school had many more dancers in the Oireachtas proper. I only credited them with entry in the Premiership. Apologies Casey.

For perhaps 20 years, Bernadette Short had it in her mind to produce a version of “The Irish Nutcracker” but between the Oireachtas and other scheduling difficulties, she never got around to it. This past Christmas, Bernadette was persuaded by her team of assistant teachers to have a go. Thanks to Patrick Shea, the producers, Ville Marie Feis Inc., were able to secure the Fr. McLean Theatre at Loyola High School as a venue. Only the Parterre was originally booked as it was felt there would be enough seats for a first time. My, did we get it wrong!!! Three weeks before the performance, i t w a s completely sold out including the gallery.

A super team of Irish dancing teachers put this “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies” together. Lucas Lawton selected Solo Dancer: Morgan Flanagan the Irish music, that would seamlessly flow from that of Tchaikovsky, for 4 scenes from his regular Nutcracker. The opening scene “A Christmas Eve Céilí” was choreographed by Marie Short. Many members commented at the placement of NUACHT in the first scene as the Irish Nutcracker, James Houghton browsed through the contents as the scene unfolded. In the second half, the following scenes “The Dance of the Snowflakes” , “The Waltz of the Flowers”, “The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies” and “The Candy Canes” were all choreographed by Lucas Lawton and Saint Patrick’s Society office guru, Katie Irving. The production, which was generously supported by the Cultural Grant Committee of St. Patrick’s Society of Montreal, was reviewed by the whole Irish community as a wonderful success.

As we are now well into “The Irish Season”, I would like to wish everyone a very happy St. Patrick’s Day. Come out and enjoy the events. The Annual St. Patrick’s Society Charity Ball, The Erin Sports charity breakfast, The St. Patrick’s Day lunch and of course, march with pride in the U.I.S. Parade. February 2018 22 NUACHT
