Ms J Burns - 2016 Local Government Regional NAIDOC Worker of the Year

It is with great pleasure that I inform you, the 2016 Local Government Regional NAIDOC Award Winner for Worker of the Year is Ms Jocelyn Burns for the Kullillah program. Kullillah is managed by Jocelyn and has provided a rich and supportive learning environment for all students. Over 600 services to students have been accessed. This includes academic support to wellbeing needs. I know Jocelyn and her team are very proud, as are all of our staff, of this unique student centred program. The event was held at WIN Entertainment Centre last Saturday night. These awards are for Indigenous workers across a number of services in the Kiama, Shellharbour and Local Government areas. We all enjoyed celebrating this achievement!

As Winter sets in, please remember we are a full uniform school. Assistance is available by contacting the school.

Congratulations to the artists who had wonderful work displayed at in the last week of Term 2 and over the school holidays. It was delightful to receive an email from ’s P&C President congratulating our student’s artwork. Congratulations must also go to our musicians who performed at the coffee shop as well as the Support Unit who held a very successful bake sale, all at Dapto Mall.

Several senior students have left as a result of gaining apprenticeships in the construction industry and motor vehicle areas. Congratulations to these new apprentices!

Great things happen at our school. I believe this is because we have wonderful students and a supportive community, as well as amazing staff. Several people have commented on the improvements they have seen at the school, such as the physical look of the school, the uniform and the students in uniform, the student’s smiles, politeness and friendliness. These comments have come from casual teachers, delivery people, parents and visitors to our school. Ms C Toohey Princpal

DAPTO MALL ART EXHIBITION

Kanahooka High School held an exhibition of students’ artwork at Dapto Mall. The exhibition began on Wednesday 29 June and concluded Monday 18 July 2016. The artwork was displayed on pin-boards on the lower level of the Mall. The exhibition was received with much interest from the shopping public and Mall Management were very impressed with it.

There is another exhibition themed ‘Shadows’ planned for the end of Term 3, beginning the last week and running through the holidays. Students will prepare their artwork for this exhibition as a major project throughout this term. Mr R Mar

‘WHAT YOUNG PEOPLE NEED’ SURVEY

TO ALL PARENTS AND CARERS: Term 3 Survey about ‘What Young People Need’ Kanahooka High School has been invited to participate in the study being conducted by researchers at the University of . The New South Wales Department of Education, The Smith Family and the Advocate for Children and Young People are partners on the project.

Students in classes in Years 8 and 9 have been invited to participate. Students in selected classes will be sent home with a Parent/Guardian Information Statement two weeks before the survey takes place. Students will complete the survey in Term 3, in Week 4 or 5.

The survey will take 25-30 minutes during class time and will ask about the types of items and activities that all young people should have. It will ask young people about their overall well-being and life satisfaction, including asking about some basic information about themselves, their family and their friends and social networks.

Participation is voluntary, so your child can decide on the day whether they would like to participate. If you are happy for your child to participate you do not need to do anything.

If you would NOT like your child to participate, please sign and return the ‘Withdrawal of Participation Form’ that will be sent home with your child, or let Mrs A Hood know that you do not want them to participate.
