Report on () Recently Dredged in the South-Western Indian Ocean I.

Description of Eight New Speeies

Roland HouART

(St. Jobsstraat, 8, B-3330 Landen (Ezemaal) Belgium: Scientific Collaborator

at the Institut Royal des Seiences Naturelles de Belgique)

Introduction

A recent paper by Vokes (1978) on the Muricidae from the eastern coast of Africa has demonstrated the imperfect state of our knowledge of Indian Ocean muricids. The present paper reports on Muricidae from a region adjacent to the area treated by Vokes: the islands and island groups of the SW Indian Ocean (Madagascar, Mauritius, Mayotte, Glorieuses Is., Reunion and the Sey- chelles). Although the material studied includes reef material, most of it

originates from dredgings and trawlings in deeper water, down to 1150m.

Undoubtedly this must account for' the high number (more than 25%) of new

taxa among the speeies collected. Despite their moderate to large size, and their

predominantly eontinental shelf habitat, murieids have a confused beeause of extensive convergence in shell charaeters. In this report, I am dealing

with the subfamilies Murieinae, , Typhinae and Trophoninae. There

are apparently no representative of the Ocenebrinae in that part of the world.

In addition to the subfamilies studied, Ergalataxinae were also present but are

being studied separately by Dr. E.H. Vokes. Species ar'e illustrated and com-

mented on when the record represents new information on the variation or

geographical distribution.

Material

The material on which this paper is based originates from various eollections

or expeditions in the south-west Indian Ocean and now housed in Mus・eum Na-

tional d'Histoire Naturelle.

Other localities: Flic en Flac, Mauritius, 50m, under rock (J. Drivas) and

Baie du Tom, Mauritius (P.W. Clover).

Etymotogy: Named for Phillip W. Clover, California, USA, who first gave me

the occasien to examine other specimens of this species.

Remutrlts :

Chicoreu$ ctoveri is related to ChicoTeus nobitis. Shikama, 1977. It presents

the same sort of spines and their arrangement is ver'y near. Only the faet

that C. eloveri is of a uniform light brown color differentiates it en first sight,

although some speeimens of C. nobilis are also uniformly coloured. C. cloveri

is smaller and, compared with a young C. nobitis, it shows a more elongate

shell, The seeond spine after that of the shoulder is mueh shorter than for C. nobilis. The most irnportant point (and what makes it surely a different species) is the protoconch: two globulous and glossy whorls, with a shallow terminal varix for C. ctoveri; conical, slightly carinate with a very different

terminal varix for C. nobilis.

thicoreus (Chicor'eus) crasnieri n. sp. (Figs. 4 and 4A)

Shell small for the genus, from 25 to 37mm. Aperture roundly ovate. Colu- mellar lip white, smooth, ereet on 1/4 of its anterior part. Anal notch deep and small. Outer apertural lip ereet and denticulate, briefiy striate interiorly. Spire high, consisting of two glossy flat and rounded nuclear whorls and five to six slightly angular postnuclear whorls. Suture appressed. Body whorl bearing three more-or-less foliate variees. Ornamentation of the body whorl variees variable. Shoulder spine absent or very shallow for the holotype, which present only the last, anterior spine. Both paratypes with carinal spines followed by three others of which the second is almost invisible on the smallest paratype. "forms". Protoconch and first whor]s are indentical for both Other axial sculp-

ture eonsisting of one large and one weak axial node; on holotype both axial nodes alrnost blended into a large single one. Spiral seulpture consisting of 9 or 10 squamous eords, usually with one intermediate squamous thread; sometimes two. Cords are slightly darker coloured on the largest paratype. Siphonal canal long and straight, narrowly open and slightly backward recurved at the at the tip; ornamented with three spines: two very near each other end of the canal and one situated medially, between the aperture and the first of the two Iast spines. The two last ones are strongly downward bent. Shell of a light brown color, aperture white. Dimensions: Holotype 37 × 15.8mm

Materiat: Holotype and one paratype in the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, type eollection; one paratype in the author's collection. Type tocatity; South of Madagascar, 26005'S, 44050'E, 100 m, 7 Mareh 1969,

Other locatities: Trawl 72, 25ell'S, 47e15'E, 85-90m (A. Crosnier coll.); Tu16ar, Madagascar, st. D71.3, outer slope, dredge, 58-165m (M. Pichon eoll.).

Etymotogy: This new speeies is named after Dr. Alain Crosnier, who eollected

this and rnany other interesting gastropods during his survey of the shrimp

fishing grounds off Madagascar.

Remarks :

C. erosnieri is near two related speeies: C. artemis Radwin & D'Attilio,

1976 and C. rossiteri (Crosse, 1872). From both speeies it differs by its eolor,

its Iarger aperture, its arrangement of spines on the siphonal canal and the

ver'y different protoconeh: eonical and slightly carinate for C. artemis and C.

rosst'teri, flat, slightly rounded and non-carinate for C. cTosnieri. The operculum

is almost identieal with that of C. rossiteTi. It must be noted that C. crosnieri

sometimes lacks the shoulder spine in the same manner as C. TossiteT'i.

This species may be compared with 2 more or Iess closely related species: PteTynotus (Pterynotus) la・quea・tus (Sewerby, 1841) and PteTynotzes (Pterynotits) martinetan- (R6ding, 1798). From the first it differs by its aperture, more

rounded and more denticulate for P. Iaqueatus which shows also fewer spiral

cords, a shorter siphonal eanal and in which the varices are ornamented with

longer webbed spines. From P. martinetana it differs by its number of varices,

the spiral eords, the rnore denticulate aperture for P. ma・rtinetana, which also

has a different columellar lip and protoconch.

varices. Spines of ]ast varix connected by a fimbriate webbing which does not

appear on other varices. Carinal spine of last varix also conneeted to body

whorl by a horizontal webbed flange. Siphonal eanal long and slender, finely

open, strongly backward recurved and smooth, with the varical flange of last

varix coming to its mid-point. Color reddish-brown, aperture light pink.

Remarics :

Four speeies of Pazinotus are known from the Indo-Pacific: Paz-inotu・s sm・ith・i

(Schepman, 1911), Eastern Sulu Archipelago, Philippines; Pazinotus fatcatiformis

(Thiele, 1925), Indian Oeean; Pazinotus oliveTai (Kosuge, 1984), Philippines;

Pazinotus phitcloveri Houart, 1984, Philippines. However, this new species may

be reasonably only compared with 2 species: P. smithi and P. philctoveri, the

other 2 speeies are very different. P. smithi is smooth, exeept for 6 large and

shallow spiral cot-ds giving rise to 6 large, ]ong spines. On the last varix these

spines are eonnected by a webbing. Ne webbing is present on the other varices.

Carinal spine longest and recurved upward on all the variees. The new species

shows 4 good visible spiral cords on the upper part of the body whorl with

intermediate threads and 4 thr'eads on lower part. The carinal spine is Iongest

but still fairly short and aeute; only the apertural is reeurved upward, on the

other varices it is almost horizontal and straight. The eolumel]ar' lip of the

new species bears a small but strong denticle on its anterior part while that of

P. smithi is srnooth. The apertural denticles of the new speeies are stronger,

showing deeper interspaces between them. The siphonal eanal is slender.

P. philcloveri has shorter spines. The suture is not so deep. The columellar ]ip shows 3 to 4 small denticles anteriorly. The presenee of heavy growth

]amellae gives an imbr'icate appearanee to the shell seulpture. The shoulder is

Iower. There are more numerous and finer spiral threads. Finally, the pro-

smooth. Anal notch shallow and fairly Iarge. Outer apertural lip weakly undulate,

inner side bearing 5 strong dentieles. Spire moderately low, eonsisting of one and one-half fiat, glossy nuclear whorls and five rounded, large and slightly angulate postnuclear whorls. Suture impressed. The body whorl bears 7 or 8 sharp, low winglike varices; no other axial sculpture. Spiral seulpture eon-

sisting of 6 cords and numerous fine spiral striae covering the whele shell. Wher'e

the cords intersect the varieel flange, short open spines formed. Carinal spine

longest and upward recurved. Siphonal canal short, open, very slightly bent

backward. Color of the shell white to light br'own. Aperture of the same color,

usually Iight brown, the dentieles and space between them and apertural edge

white. The rather small muricine radula eonsists of a raehidian tooth and a

long and slender lateral. The raehidian has strong, prominent endpoints and

bears five cusps: a long central with long laterals, intermediate eusps are short.

Remarks :

Only known from about 10 fossil species: 8 European, 1 Caribbean and 1 from the Philippines (Vokes, 1971), this genus was ereeted by Shuto (1969: 111) in the family Coralliophilidae. Strueture of the shell and presenee of a murieine radula (unknown in the Coralliophilidae) shows its aMnities with the

Murieidae. The discovery of live specimens of a new species in the Indian

Oeean is undoubtedly the most exeiting news of this report. P'lexopteron pri-

manova・ n. sp. may be compared with Flexop・teron pahitippinensis Shuto, 1969.

The new species has 6 large spiral eords on the body whorl, including the

carinal one; Rlexopteron phil'ippinensis has finer spiral cords and threads, 10 in

total, on the body whorl. The new species has a flatter shoulder', finer variees,

a flatter protoeonch with a straighter terminal varix.

RemaTks :

Two related speeies may be eompared: MurexsuL toicubeii Nakamigawa &

Habe, 1964 from Japan and Taiwan. This shell is different in being rnuch larger

for the same nurnber of postnuclear whorls; 5 or 6 barely visible threads on

the shoulder and one short spine on the siphonal eanal. Another similar species,

Murexsut elatensis (Emerson & D'Attilie, 1979) from the Red Sea is very near,

but the new species has finer and more grooved spiral eords and more marked

cords en the shoulder. Moreover, it has intermediate spiral threads, while M.

etatensis has none. M. elatensis has also mor'e upward recurved and Ionger

earinal spines. Although named as Favartia I here suggest removing F. etatensis

to the more appropriate genus Mrurexsul.

Remarks :

Siphonoehetnts nipponensis Keen and Campbell, 1964 differs in having more flattened anal tubes while these of the new species are more rounded, it has

also a flatter' pt'otoconch ; the new species is a more fusiform shell. Sip・honochelus (Laevityphis) tzaelrookae Keen and Campbell, 1964, an Australian fossil, is a much Iarger and more triangular shell with a larger aperture and more perpen- dieular tubes. Moreover in the subgenus Laevityphis the anal tubes are not

incorporated into the varices. SiphonocheLu's generosus (Ir'edale, 1936) is also

a larger shell with more flat and upward eurved anal tubes; it has also a more globular protoconeh. Siphonochelzas sotus Vella, 1961 is larger, for the same number of postnuelear whorls, it is more slender, has more rounded varices and

a flatter protoconch. Acknowtedgements;-First of all, I wish to thank partieularly Dr. Philippe Bouchet (Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris) who gave me the opportunity to study
