School Day Live presents STRING STORIES The Roots and Fruits of the Blues Tuesday, April 24, 2018 11:30 a.m. Grades 3 - 12 As part of our ongoing commitment to providing world class entertainment and education through the arts, the Apollo Theater Education Program is pleased to present String Stories: The Roots and Fruits of the Blues, as part of our 2017/18 School Day Live series. From spirituals to work songs, the Delta Blues, Piedmont Blues, Kansas City and Chicago Blues, String Stories follows the history of the Blues and introduces students to some of the great women who helped create this American art form. The performance traces the Blues from the West African griot tradition, to the African American acapella spiritual tradition, to work songs, highlighting along the way how stringed instruments like the guitar and banjo accompanied the Blues and evolved with the music. String Stories features an orchestra comprised of world renown vocalists and instrumentalists: Jackie Coleman - Bass Tamar - Kali Brown - Vocals Queen Esther - Vocals Karyn Smith - Guitar Jackie Venson - Guitar LaFrae Sci - Drums The String Stories orchestra was organized by musical director LaFrae Sci specifically for this Apollo School Day Live performance. Sci, a drummer and composer believes music can heal the world and is trying to do her part one day at a time. In addition to being a founding teaching member of the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls and a faculty member of the Middle School Jazz Academy at Jazz at Lincoln Center, LaFrae has toured, recorded and worked with a myriad of Jazz, Blues, Pop, Rock, world music and Hip-hop artists. -

THE GOLDEN GATE BLUES SOCIETY NEWSLETTER Issue 6, July 2010 GOLDEN GATE GROOVES FROM THE EDITOR Deb Lubin The period since the last newsletter was published was very busy, with planning for upcoming blues society events, going out to hear our favorite local blues bands, and our annual pilgrimage to Memphis in May for the Blues Music Awards. The BMAs are a wonderful event that all blues lovers should attend at least once. This year in Memphis, we got to see many of our favorite musicians from the Bay Area, among them Rick Estrin and the Nightcats, including Kid Andersen; the entire Tommy Castro Band, which took home several awards; Laura Chavez and Kennan Shaw from Candye Kane's band; Maria Muldaur, and others with Bay Area ties. I had so much fun reconnecting with old friends both on and off the stage. Meanwhile, the GGBS is rolling. We're getting ready for several big events that we're either sponsoring, partnering with, or supporting, including the 5th annual Redwood City Blues Festival in July, the first U.S. events of the European-based charity United by Music , the San Jose Jazz Festival in August, and events to select a member band to compete in the Blues Foundation's International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis in February 2011, among others. Please look for information about all of these events in this issue of the newsletter. In addition, East Bay musician/cat lover/pre-war blues specialist Joel Fritz reviews four CDs by local bands. Fats Domino, the New Orleans rhythm-and-blues singer whose two-fisted boogie-woogie piano and nonchalant vocals, heard on dozens of hits, made him one of the biggest stars of the early rock ’n’ roll era, died on Tuesday at his home in Harvey, La., across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. He was 89. His death was confirmed by the Jefferson Parish coroner’s office. Mr. Domino had more than three dozen Top 40 pop hits through the 1950s and early ’60s, among them “Blueberry Hill,” “Ain’t It a Shame” (also known as “Ain’t That a Shame,” which is the actual lyric), “I’m Walkin’,” “Blue !1 Monday” and “Walkin’ to New Orleans.” Throughout he displayed both the buoyant spirit of New Orleans, his hometown, and a droll resilience that reached listeners worldwide. He sold 65 million singles in those years, with 23 gold records, making him second only to Elvis Presley as a commercial force. Presley acknowledged Mr. Domino as a predecessor. “A lot of people seem to think I started this business,” Presley told Jet magazine in 1957. “But rock ’n’ roll was here a long time before I came along. Nobody can sing that music like colored people. Let’s face it: I can’t sing it like Fats Domino can. -

She was es- pecially influenced, though; by Chicago blues and early boogie woogie, and by her early twenties she was playing around town in a va- riety of jazz and blues outfits. In the early 90s, she was one of the main drivers behind the band Lonesome Boogie, playing pubs and clubs and the festival circuit, including the East Coast Blues & Roots Festival in Byron Bay, Woodford Folk Festival, Lithgow Blues Festival, Thredbo Blues Festival, Southern Cross Festival in Narooma, Goulburn Blues Festival and the Manly Jazz Festival. Lonesome Boogie made two recordings – Grinnin’ and Pickin’ (1995) and Hey This is Our Town (1998), on which Carolyn’s famous pi- ano boogie The Pines Stomp was first recorded. -

JOE AND VICKI PRICE joepriceblue.com To Dorr, Joe and Vicki Price epitomize “the real deal.” “Joe Price has been a hero of mine since the mid-’70s, when he was part of the Mother Blues Band in Iowa City,” he says. The husband and wife duo have been playing and touring together since 1982 and have shared the stage with the likes of Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, and fellow Iowan Greg Brown. Their album Rain or Shine won the Independent Music Award for Best Blues CD of 2010. They call Decorah home but are rarely there long. They tour nationally and perform often at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago. -

Luther Johnson – telarc.com Luther “Guitar Junior” Johnson is one of the premier blues artists to emerge from Chicago’s music scene. Hailing from Itta Bena, Mississippi, Johnson arrived in Chicago in the mid-fifties a young man. At around the same time, the West Side guitar style, a way of playing alternating stinging single-note leads with powerful distorted chords, was being created mostly by Magic Sam and Otis Rush. Originally developed because their small bands could not afford both lead and rhythm guitar players, this style grew into an important contribution to modern blues and rock, influencing such notables as Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler. Johnson served a long sideman apprenticeship with both Magic Sam and Muddy Waters, while developing into a strong performer in his own right. Today, Luther is widely considered the foremost proponent of the West Side guitar style and the heir apparent to the late Magic Sam’s West Side throne. Luther Johnson first gained an international reputation as a guitarist and vocalist with Muddy Waters’ band, touring the U.S., Europe, Japan and Australia from 1973-79. Given the opportunity to front the band on his featured tunes in each show, Johnson’s super-charged performances consistently thrilled audiences in the world’s leading concert halls, including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center and Radio City Music Hall as well as at music festivals in Newport, Antibes, New Orleans and countless others. During his association with Muddy Waters, Johnson also shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers and Johnny Winter. -
