For up-to-date information on college news, activities and events, please refer to Bridgewater State College’s Web site: www.bridgew.edu 1 Dear friends, here was a time not all that long ago when the phrase “getting a college education” represented a relatively simple, discrete component of the TAmerican dream. Students would spend four years of their young lives at a given institution, earn a bachelor’s degree and enter the workforce with an advantage. Back then, going to college was thought of as just one of the many obvious and necessary steps in a very linear path to success — or at least, so it was, for the people who could afford it. As access to higher education has improved (thanks in no small part to the growth of state colleges and universities), its function has become increasingly dynamic. Once charged solely with stimulating the learning process, institutions of higher learning are now called upon to prepare the next generation of well-rounded citizens, instill it with character and prepare it to participate in the world of the 21st century. Furthermore, educating this new generation can no longer be thought of as an open-and-shut process; rather, colleges and universities have adapted to become full partners in the lifelong quest for growth and discovery. At Bridgewater State College, these are missions we take very seriously. As you’ll read about on the pages that follow, we have positioned ourselves exceed- ingly well to meet these challenges, as evidenced by the achievements of our students and faculty. Whether it’s through the unique travel opportunities we make available to our students, the wealth of innovative options we offer at the graduate level or the many ways in which the college helps to connect one generation with another, it’s obvious that we’ve embraced our expanded role with great alacrity. I hope you’ll take a few moments to read about the many exciting things going on at Bridgewater State College and to discover the multitude of ways in which we are preparing our people not just to participate in today’s world, but to lead it.
Sincerely,
Dana Mohler-Faria President
