We are so proud to bring this landmark musical to Los Angeles.

Snehal Desai and Leslie A. Ito. photo by Michael Palma. At a time when civil liberties are under threat and our most vulnerable communities are being targeted, Allegiance shares an essential American story, one that seeks to speak about the injustice survived by 120,000 innocent Americans persecuted and incarcerated because of their cultural and ethnic heritage. The story of Allegiance is about the resilience of the human spirit. This year marks the 76th anniversary of , which authorized the incarceration of Japanese Americans. As we lose our beloved Issei and (first and second generation Japanese Americans), we also lose their first-person narratives to document this often overlooked part of American history. It is imperative that we share their stories and above all make sure that mistakes of the past are not repeated.

It has been a privilege to create this partnership between East West Players (EWP), the longest-running professional theater of color in the United States, and Japanese American Cultural & Community Center (JACCC), one of the largest ethnic arts and cultural centers in the nation. It has been nothing short of a remarkable journey to bring Allegiance home.

Thank you to the tremendous who has helped bring Allegiance to L.A. and on behalf of EWP’s and JACCC’s Board of Directors, Council of Governors, and staff, thank you for joining us.

With gratitude,

Snehal Desai Leslie A. Ito EWP Producing Artistic Director JACCC President & CEO CAST

Tell us about your approach to directing Allegiance. What themes have you focused on for this production? What stood out for you?

Growing up in Pennsylvania, it was only when I came to Los Angeles a few years ago and began working at East West Players that I had the privilege to meet and speak to camp survivors and their families. It was heartbreaking to hear stories about their harrowing journeys of incarceration, tremendous loss, and returning home to see the house and business they had worked their whole lives for just gone.

At the heart of Allegiance is a story of resilience and strength, of the memories that haunt us, and
