Adult 2018 – Tournament Quarterfinals Summary

With one round of playoff action in the books, we are now one step closer to crowning the Champions for our Adult Summer Basketball Leagues. Here is a closer look at what took place in the Quarterfinals in both leagues.

Monday, July 30th

30 & Over League - #1 Mapleton Lane Lakers (High) vs #8 Wells Fargo (English)

The Mapleton Lane Lakers were able to secure a victory in the quarterfinals by utilizing a balanced scoring attack. They were led in scoring by Zach High (13pts, 6 assists, 4 steals) but had a of other strong contributions as well. Brian Carroll had a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, as well as 4 assists, and five other players scored at least 6 points in the game (Wells Allen – 9 pts, 4 reb; Brian Garner – 9 pts, 3 reb; Trabert Allen – 8 pts, 3 assists; Lee Bradley – 7 pts, 3 reb 2 assists, 3 steals; Jake Williams – 6 pts, 7 reb, 2 assists), while Jarvis Garrett controlled the paint offensively and defensively throughout the game as well (4 pts, 10 reb, 4 assists). Despite strong efforts from Chris Tapp (9 pts, 8 reb, 6 assists, 2 steals) and Mike Cagle (9 pts, 6 reb, 2 steals) it was not enough to overcome the balanced Lakers attack, leading to a final score of 70-31.

30 & Over League - #4 McEntire Insurance Agency (McEntire) vs #5 Spurs (Camp)

In this Quarterfinal matchup, McEntire Insurance Agency came out of the gates on fire, and they never looked back. They ended the first quarter with a 26-7 lead and they did not let their foot off of the gas. Led by big time double doubles by Billy Alm (24 pts, 18 reb, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Josh Money (18 pts, 16 reb, 3 assists, 2 steals) McEntire Insurance Agency controlled the game from the inside out. Kyle Baron also had a great showing with 21 points and 4 assists in the contest. The short-handed Spurs team battled hard to the very end, but ultimately it was not their night. McEntire Insurance Agency secured the win by a score of 77-24, setting up a Semifinal matchup with the top seeded Mapleton Lane Lakers.

30 & Over League - #3 Cardiac Pack (Highsmith/Muse) vs #6 Crush (Hodges)

In the final game of the evening, both teams came ready for a hard fought game, and this matchup did not disappoint. The Crush jumped out to an early lead led by strong defense and some tough inside scoring from Sam Vining. The Cardiac Pack battled back and brought the deficit to single digits throughout the second half, but in the end they could not overcome the stingy box-and-1 defensive strategy and the gritty offense of the Crush. The Crush showcased a balanced attack throughout their starting lineup. Vining finished with a team high 16 points as well as 9 rebounds. Drew Price contributed a double double of his own with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists. Jordan Devere came through with timely shooting (8 pts, 10 reb) and Chad Royster played tenacious defense and controlled the pace on offense (8 pts, 6 assists, 4 reb) as both guys were key in the victory. Jon Wing ended with a game high 20 points, with Brandon Highsmith adding 8 points and 11 rebounds, but the Crush held on by a score of 44-34 to advance to the Semifinals. Tuesday, July 31st

30 & Over League - #2 Raiders (Moore) vs #7 Midway Baptist Church Kings of the Court (Powell)

In the fourth and final Quarterfinal game for the 30 & Over League, the second seeded Raiders squared off with Midway Baptist Church. The Raiders were very short handed in the game with only four available players, but the players that they did have certainly came ready to play. Led by a phenomenal showing from Keith Smith (30 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals) the Raiders were able to overcome their lack of depth and secure the victory. Wade Smith (12pts, 11 reb, 3 assists, and 5 steals) and Dylan Davidson (15 pts, 10 reb, 5 assists, and 3 steals) both finished with double doubles, and team captain Brandon Moore had a solid all around game with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Anthony Day had a strong performance for Midway, leading the team in both points and rebounds (11 pts, 10 reb) but solid play from the entire Raiders squad was enough to earn the 67-49 win. This set up a showdown between the Raiders and the Crush in the semifinals after both had strong Quarterfinal showings.

Open League - #4 The Better Foothills (Miller) vs #5 Splash (Beason)

The #4 vs #5 matchup is almost always going to produce a hard fought game, and this contest was no different. Both teams were very evenly matched and battled from the first whistle to the last. The Splash used a big second quarter to grab control of the game early and maintained a double digit lead heading in to the fourth quarter. The Better Foothills brought everything they had in the fourth quarter and had the lead down to as little as three points, but in the end the Splash came out on top 65-58. The Splash were led by a number of notable performers in this quarterfinal. Team Captain Derrall Beason led them in scoring with 25 points and he also added 4 assists and 3 rebounds, but the play of the Splash’s tall and athletic front was a deciding factor in the game. Omar Sanders (16 pts, 13 reb, 5 assists, 1 ), Corey Lovett (13 pts, 17 reb, 4 assists, 3 blocks), and Marcus Watts (9 pts, 10 reb, 5 assists, 2 blocks) all combined to form a dynamic front line both offensively and defensively. The Better Foothills played valiantly led by Chandler Miller (18 pts, 11 reb), Andre Overholt (17 pts, 6 assists, 2 steals), and Jason Chupp (12 pts, 15 reb, 5 assists, 2 steals), but it was not enough to avoid the upset. Splash will now face the top seeded Staley Plumbing (Palmer) in the Semifinals.

Open League - #3 Illest Shooters in Spartanburg (Metcalf) vs #6 Main Street Insurance Tune Squad (Smith)

In the final Quarterfinal game for either league, the third seed Illest Shooters in Spartanburg had to bring their best effort to hold off the sixth seeded Main Street Insurance Tune Squad. Led by 32 points and 12 rebounds from league MVP Josh Stanley, the Illest Shooters got off to a fast start to the game and kept Main Street Insurance at bay throughout the matchup. Austin Harper also had a big outing with 17 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists, with Seth Breeden adding in 7 points and 14 rebounds in the game. Main Street Insurance had a very balanced game scoring as a team, and were able to make a fourth quarter run to get the lead down to single digits. But despite the strong efforts from Quinn Chody (12 pts, 4 assists, 3 reb), Jordan Smith (13 pts, 7 reb, 2 blocks), Wes Brady (15 pts, 7 reb), and Nathan Cantrell (10 pts, 8 reb, 3 assists, 3 steals) the Illest Shooters were able to hang on for a 69-54 victory. This sets them up to face Wolverine Pizza-Good Foothills Team (Yoder) in the Open League Semifinals.
