C onsulting a m ap, I chose to explore H ow e’s Lake, a sm all sandy lake north of M -72 w est of G rayling. There w asn’t a lot actually plying the lake itself, but the w et, grassy depressions near the lake shore had several species of Lestes, Saffon-w inged M eadow haw k (Sym petrum costiferum , a county record), and quite a few Aeshna’s pa- trolling lazily or ovipositing in the shallow w ater. I netted a few C anada D arners (Aeshna canadensis), and som e Black-tipped D arners (A. tuberculifera, county record). It appeared that all the blue darners at the site w ere these tw o species, until I netted one w ith broken thoracic stripes, w hich I took to be a V ariable D arner (A. interrupta). W hen I returned hom e to sort through the speci- m ens, I turned this specim en over, I found that the other side of the thorax w as the standard C anada D arner pattern. -

Freshwater Measures for the Northern Great Plains Steppe Ecoregion of Montana
Freshwater Measures for the Northern Great Plains Steppe Ecoregion of Montana Prepared under the Freshwater Initiative Agreement #1410258002-0000 by David M. Stagliano Aquatic Ecologist December 2006 Natural Resource Information System Montana State University Executive Summary Project goals of the Freshwater Ecoregional Measures for the Northern Great Plains Steppe (NGPS) are to: 1) identify and reevaluate the number, diversity and viability of aquatic target occurrences within the Montana portion of the NGPS Ecoregional Plan based on a suite of indicator-based measures set within the aquatic ecological system framework, and 2) determine biodiversity viability measures (for the aquatic ecological system types, or for target species), threat status, and protection of these targets within the portfolio sites of the Ecoregional Plan. Using a combination of field data and GIS data layers, we analyzed the intersection of portfolio sites, 5th code watersheds, target occurrences, and indicator measures (viability, threats, and protection) to form an effective conservation map of selected MT portfolio sites in the NGPS. Overall, 34 of Montana’s 43 native fish species reside within the NGPS ecoregion. Nine of these are MT Species of Special Concern (SOC), one of which is listed Endangered by the USFWS and four are potential species of concern (PSOC). All of these fish species, except one have at least one viable occurrence within MT’s portfolio sites. The 15 types of prairie aquatic ecological systems (8 biological) are well represented within the portfolio, including associated aquatic macroinvertebrate communities with their SOC species. Threats in the portfolio with the broadest scope and severity are agriculture and surface diversions in the watersheds, while the most pervasive moderate level threats are riparian grazing and presence of northern pike, an introduced piscivorous fish. -

This report on Montana Animal Species of Concern is produced jointly by the Montana Natural Heritage Program (MTNHP) and Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (MFWP). Montana Animal Species of Concern are native Montana animals that are considered to be "at risk" due to declining population trends, threats to their habitats, and/or restricted distribution. Also included in this report are Potential Animal Species of Concern -- animals for which current, often limited, information suggests potential vulnerability or for which additional data are needed before an accurate status assessment can be made. Over the last 200 years, 5 species with historic breeding ranges in Montana have been extirpated from the state; Woodland Caribou (Rangifer tarandus), Greater Prairie-Chicken (Tympanuchus cupido), Passenger Pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius), Pilose Crayfish (Pacifastacus gambelii), and Rocky Mountain Locust (Melanoplus spretus). Designation as a Montana Animal Species of Concern or Potential Animal Species of Concern is not a statutory or regulatory classification. Instead, these designations provide a basis for resource managers and decision-makers to make proactive decisions regarding species conservation and data collection priorities in order to avoid additional extirpations. -

May This dissertation explores the life history and behavior of the Tiger Spiketail dragonfly (Cordulegaster erronea Hagen) and provides recommendations for the conservation of the species. Like most species in the genus Cordulegaster and the family Cordulegastridae, the Tiger Spiketail is geographically restricted, patchily distributed with its range, and a habitat specialist in habitats susceptible to disturbance. Most Cordulegastridae species are also of conservation concern and the Tiger Spiketail is no exception. However, many aspects of the life history of the Tiger Spiketail and many other Cordulegastridae are poorly understood, complicating conservation strategies. In this dissertation, I report the results of my research on the Tiger Spiketail in New Jersey. The research to investigate life history and behavior included: larval and exuvial sampling; radio- telemetry studies; marking-resighting studies; habitat analyses; observations of ovipositing females and patrolling males, and the presentation of models and insects to patrolling males. -

When people think of insect migration, the Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a familiar figure, but the Wandering Glider (Pantala flavescens), a widely distributed species also known as a regular mi- grant in North America, can travel 11,000 miles (17,700 km) across the Indian Ocean from Africa to India and back—more than twice the distance of the Monarch’s well-known annual journey. Only about 16 of our 326 dragonfly species in North America are regular migrants, with some making annual seasonal flights while others are more sporadic. The major migratory species in North America are Common Green Darner (Anax junius), Wandering Glider (Pantala flave- scens), Spot-winged Glider (P. hymenaea), Black Saddlebags (Tramea lacerata), and Variegated Meadowhawk (Sympetrum corruptum). Different species tend to dominate migration flights in different parts of the continent. Anax junius is our best-known migrant, moving in Common Green Darner (Anax junius) at North Bend, Coos County, Oregon. -

2014 Survey of Odonata of the Upper Mississippi and Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuges Dan Jackson, S2256 County Hwy K, Chaseburg, WI 54621 Introduction 2014 was the second flight season covered by a special use permit to survey Odonata on the Upper Mississippi and Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuges. Unfortunately, once again, high water and equipment problems reduced the number of outings that I was able to take via boat onto the refuges. Therefore, I again spent the majority of my survey effort on dry land adjacent to various wetlands on the refuges, often during my lunch breaks or at the end of my work day. This effort included 67 location surveys on about 40 different dates from April 25, 2014, when I spotted my first Anax junius (Common Green Darner) of the year, until October 20, 2014, when I went out and saw a few butterflies but no Odonata. I tried to take pictures and record sightings of other insects and spiders that I spotted while surveying for Odonata. I was able to record 232 sightings of various insects and 1 sighting of a spider in addition to 498 sighting records of Odonata. A summary of those sightings will be included at the end of my Odonata survey results. 2014 was an interesting year for surveying Odonata. Spring was relatively late, with the first Odonata seen 2-3 weeks later than normal. The Mississippi River was also very high in May and June and this made surveying very difficult during this period. Despite the slow start, Odonata seemed to catch up by early June and initial sighting dates of many species became closer to normal.
