Salama Madagascar travelers!

A word used frequently by the Malagasy people, “salama” means a warm and happy hello.

I am very excited about sharing Madagascar with new friends. It has become my second home over the last 20 years, as I have visited 28 times since 2000! health research started me there and continues to take me back. Lemurs are endemic to Madagascar and all 104 species are endangered, some critically.

This tour does a superb job of giving a great profile of the country. Our adventure begins immediately upon our mid-day arrival in Tana (the shortened version of Antananarivo). We’ll spend the first couple of days at Andasibe, one of the premier lemur sites in the entire country. The park is well established, with expert local guides and habituated lemurs, so we are guaranteed to see lots of cool right from the start. The park is famous for indri, the largest and potentially longest-lived lemur. Malagasy revere indri and consider them ancestors. Their amazing call can be heard for over a mile, and we will no doubt be awakened by that call the first morning. On our nocturnal walks we will see chameleons, mouse lemurs and hopefully dwarf lemurs. Andasibe also has diademed sifaka, the most beautiful lemur and my personal favorite. Just as our trip starts in Andasibe, my lemur career did too – my first project was with indri and sifaka here in 2000.

Continuing on to the east coast and explorations of the low altitude rainforest to the Palmarium, we will have more lemur viewing opportunities, including a better than average chance to see aye-aye. This wonderful nocturnal lemur has eluded me for 20 years! We will visit Parc Ivoloina, a small zoo in Tamatave. A consortium of zoos has funded and managed this zoo for more than 20 years, and I have assisted with their veterinary care on several occasions. This will give us a great opportunity to get up close and personal with representative lemur species, as well as see their numerous education programs at work. From Tamatave we travel north for whale watching, an activity that is growing rapidly in Madagascar and July/August is prime whale time.

The trip ends appropriately in one of the most beautiful parks in Madagascar – Ranomafana National Park. Ranomafana has been a research center for more than 20 years, overseen by my dear friend Dr. Patricia Wright. A primatologist at Stony Brook University (New York), Pat has been working and training students at the Centre ValBio for all those years. I have worked with Pat on numerous occasions, and am currently a co-investigator for a project in Ranomafana. We’ll have lunch at the center and then enjoy learning about their efforts to protect the country’s unique ecosystems through community project s and conservation efforts.

As you can see, I’m passionate about Madagascar, lemurs and conservation, and am excited for the chance to share this wonderful experience with new friends. I hope you will join us for a trip of a lifetime. Dr. Randy Junge Vice President, Animal Health OUR DESTINATION – MADAGASCAR Madagascar is a huge island (the birds, more than 100 of which fourth largest in the world) located are found nowhere else in off the east coast of southern Africa. the world.
