Summer Day Camp San Gabriel’s Day Camp for grades 1-8 will be at Coolidge Elementary School this summer. Summer Day Camp will run from June 5 through August 18 and feature a variety of fun summer activities for youth. Registration begins Monday, May 8. Day Camp is a fee-based program with morning and afternoon extended care available. Camp is limited and fi lls up quickly, so be sure to register early for summer! Bulldog Sports Camp Bulldog Sports Camp, geared for middle school aged youth, kicks off June 5 at Jefferson Middle School and runs through July 7. This free camp is Monday - Friday from 12:30-3:30 pm. Bulldog Sports Camp reinforces the basic fundamentals of basketball and volleyball skills, works on core strength, and focuses on teamwork and sportsmanship. pring is here and it is time to bring your baskets to Smith Park and be on the lookout for Mr. and Mrs. Bunny! The 73rd SAnnual Pancake Breakfast and Egg Hunt, sponsored by the San Gabriel Kiwanis Club and the Community Services Department, will be held at Smith Park on Saturday, April 15. Hunting for eggs is not all Mr. Bunny has planned! The morning’s activities will get underway with the Pancake Breakfast from 7 to 11 am. Donation for breakfast is $5 for adults and $2 for children under 10 and includes pancakes, sausage, orange juice, coffee and milk. Face painting and the coloring contest begin at 7:30 am and the exciting Pancake Races begin at 9 am. Bring a pancake turner to compete in your age category. Contestants 10 years and older will run 100 feet while balancing a pancake on their pancake turner. Prizes for the winners have been donated by local businesses. The Spring Celebration will continue with the Egg Hunt at 10 am where children, ages 9 and younger, are invited to bring their baskets and hunt for eggs at this free event. San Gabriel’s Play Day Celebrating La Laguna’s 52nd Anniversary Food • Games • Entertainment • Family Fun Saturday, May 20 he City of San Gabriel in conjunction with the Friends of La TLaguna invite you to celebrate the La Laguna Playground with a day of play! The event will take place at Vincent Lugo Park from 11am - 2pm, at the corner of Wells and Ramona Streets. In 1965, the Laguna de San Gabriel playground was built on the last undeveloped land of Vincent Lugo Park. Benjamin Dominguez, an artist known for his imaginative concrete structures, was the creator of the playground. Familiar creatures such as "Minnie" the whale, "Stella" the starfi sh, "Ozzie" the octopus, and three dolphins - Flipper, Speedy and Peanut - dot the lagoon. La Laguna was recently placed in the National Register of Historic Places. Health and Wellness Fair Thursday, May 11 May is “Senior Health and Fitness Month” and to celebrate, the Community Services Department is hosting the 8th Annual Health and Wellness Fair on Thursday, May 11 from 10 am to 1 pm. The fair will take place at the Adult Recreation Center, 324 S. Mission Dr. Participants will have an opportunity to gather free information on health and wellness services available throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Services available on the day of the event may include but are not limited to, blood pressure checks, glucose testing and spinal screenings. Lunch will be available to the fi rst 75 older adult participants who register by May 4. There is a $3 suggested donation for lunch. Pickleball is now at Smith Park! What is Pickleball you ask? Pickleball is a mix between tennis, badminton and ping pong. It is played on a smaller court with wood paddles and a type of whiffl e ball. Pickleball has grown in popularity over the past few years and is a great game for all ages, particularly older adults who want to stay active but may have limited mobility. It is also a great opportunity to get some exercise with friends or even make new ones. Two pickleball courts are available at Smith Park, 232 West Broadway, every Monday and Wednesday from 9 am to 12 pm. If you need a paddle or balls, they can be checked out with a valid ID at the Community Services Department, 250 S. Mission Dr. Come join us for this fun and active sport! Elementary Programs The After School Recreation Programs at Coolidge, McKinley, Washington and Wilson Elementary Schools will run through Thursday, June 1. The program is held five days per week, 2:30 to 5:00 pm and 1:30 to 5:00 pm on Wednesdays. This FREE program is a great opportunity for your child to get some assistance with homework, stay active and have fun! Be sure to ask the Recreation Leaders at your school site about the All-City Pentathlon, Drill Team Competition, Soccer and other activities available during the spring. If your child is interested in training for the All-City Pentathlon, they can do so at any of the after school program sites between February 20 and March 17. Jefferson Middle School Programs Along with the spring sports program, Jefferson Middle School will have an intramural Co-ed Futsal League (indoor soccer). Participants will be able to practice soccer fundamentals while being a part of a school intramural team. In April, students will play intramural Co-ed Volleyball. During that time there will be an opportunity to try out for the traveling boys’ volleyball team. Players must be enrolled in the Jefferson intramural program in order to be on the traveling team. Intramural sports will be held Wednesdays 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, with games on Fridays between 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. All intramurals are fee-based and limited to Jefferson students. Drill Team Competition, May 13 The San Gabriel Community Services Department will hold the 59th Annual Drill Team Competition on Saturday, May 13. The competition will take place at 10:00 am in the Jefferson Middle School gym. Youth in grades 3-5 from San Gabriel’s public elementary schools will participate in this exciting competition that develops teamwork and rhythmic coordination through group routine performances. All interested participants should sign up with the after school Recreation Leader at their school.

Spring Break Trip to Knott’s Berry Farm, April 6 Get ready to enjoy a day at “America’s #1 Theme Park”! The trip will be Thursday, April 6 and will depart at 9:00 am and return by 6:00 pm to the Mission Playhouse parking lot, 320 S. Mission Dr. All ages are welcome and be sure to bring extra money for lunch, souvenirs and treats. Youth participants who are attending without parent supervision will be grouped with experienced Recreation Leaders.
