President’s Message Peter Mackins Although the number of members attending was low I understand those who did attend the Midway run to San Diego had a great time. We are so fortunate that we have so many points of interest within a relatively short drive, to say nothing about having so much of it on the west coast. We only have one event during each of the next three months. If you have an idea for a run we would love to hear from you.

We have a couple of business items to address at the meeting this coming Tuesday. Those would be to vote on the updated Constitution and By-Laws and also to approve the budget. I believe this is the first budget or at least the first budget within sometime. Please understand this is a budget it’s not an appropriation. It is a road map of where we are going and how we expect to get there.

I hope everyone enjoyed Jerry LoMonaco’s presentation and the opportunity to check out up close the Panoz. For the money I liked better Jerry Wilson’s ZO6 that occupied the adjacent parking space. But hey I’m a Corvette guy. Really I am.

Since September 11th is the 14th anniversary of the attacks on New York City, one member was more in- volved than most of us who were simply watching in horror the images on television. Tony Megowan was in the control tower that day and had a front row seat to history. Tuesday he will share with us some of the be- hind the scene activities.

We still have openings for the October run to the Magic Castle. Due to its proximity to Halloween costumes are encouraged but not mandatory. Those who attended previously will agree it is a fun evening.

See you all Tuesday evening at 6:30 at the Mesa Café. Arrive early so you can chat with old friends or to get acquainted with new members. Please wear you name tags. It helps in getting acquainted.

San Diego / USS Midway Run - Continued from front page

USS Midway was enjoyable and reminded both Jim Purcell and Bob Aan- derud of their Navy days. Jim was stationed aboard the sister ship, USS Coral Sea, and Bob was ported in Yokosuka, Japan, tied out board of the USS Midway, for part of his West Pac Tour.

The free docent tours, exhibits and lectures were wonderful and a great reminder of sacrifices of the men and women who go into harms way every day, to keep America safe and to defend those who can't defend them- selves. God Bless our Service Men and Women, keep them safe and guide their commanders.

Back on the Big Blue Bay Bus to the Sheraton to pick up the Corvettes and a short run to the Corvette Diner for lunch.

The Corvette Diner is a 50's/60's nostalgia trip with Oldies Mu- sic, fun food items, malts, burgers, dancing waiter's and wait- ress's, Cherry Cokes and flying straws, and the feel of really be- ing back in the Good Old Days! Memories quickly come flooding back to mind, even as more memories are being made with these great Corvette travelers! We also toured The Corvette Club House, which was a special room inside the Corvette Din- er, where a local Corvette Club meets and where any Corvette Club coming to the area can hold a gathering.

Lunch was so filling, we decided to skip going out to dinner in the evening and instead we would meet in the Hotel Lounge for cock- tails. The next day, it would be time to head out for other adventures before returning home. For those who missed this run, you missed a great time! Maybe next year!

All in all, what an amazing and fun time! Thank you to the run partici- pants! Would travel with you anytime!

Be sure to read Jim Purcell's personal memories of San Diego and the USS Midway!

Another Great American Sports Car Jim Purcell

The guest speaker for the August meeting was Jerry LoMonaco, a former executive with Ford Motor Compa- ny, now Regional Vice President for Panoz LLC. Though not related to our own Frank and Barbara LoMona- co, they have more in common than just their surnames. One owns a bright yellow Z06 Corvette and the other owns a bright yellow Panoz Esparante Spyder.

Sharing a common love for great American sports cars, Jerry generously offered to give a presentation to our members and let us pore over his 25th Anniversary Edition Panoz Esparante Spyder. Which, coincident- ly, is powered by none other than Chevy’s 550 horsepower supercharged LSA 6.2L V-8 engine more com- monly found in the Camaro ZL1. Panoz is a very familiar name to those in the racing world. The Atlanta-based manufacturer has competed successfully in racing events world-wide. One notable victory was the GT2 Class win at the 2006 . In fact, The (ALMS), in which Corvette com- peted very successfully for years, was created by . ALMS subsequently merged with the to form United Sports Car Racing.

Jerry presented a captivating slide show highlighting the evolution of Panoz and the development of the Espa- rante Spyder. The aluminum chassis and body panels are complemented with thoughtful usage of high-tech carbon fiber for both the interior and exterior accents. Production of this custom, made-to-order elegant sports car will be limited to just 25. Of course, our incredible Corvettes stood proudly near the Spyder especially Jer- ry & Ann Wilson’s awesome 2015 Blue Z06 Stingray convertible which was parked right next to it. The Corvette Club of Santa Barbara would like to express its thanks and appreciation to Jerry LoMonaco and Panoz LLC for giving us this opportunity to see another great American sports car up close and personal.

Member Highlight Jim & Judy Purcell

An Unexpected Journey into the Past

CCSB’s recent run to San Diego turned out to be quite the nostalgic experi- ence for Judy and Jim Purcell. The itinerary, independently planned out by Bob & Ivy Aanderud, included a tour of the aircraft carrier USS Mid- way, dinner at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, and lunch at the Corvette Diner. Af- ter check-in and Happy Hour at the Sheraton Inn, the group strolled along the Harbor Island waterfront to Tom Ham’s Lighthouse restaurant located at the western tip of the island. Along the way, Jim recounted the evening 41 years earlier when Judy had driven from Fresno to San Diego to surprise him when his aircraft carrier made a weekend port call in San Diego Bay. Coincidently, their first night’s dinner was enjoyed at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse. They had long ago forgotten the name of the restaurant until this run, and were pleasantly surprised that it was still there after all these years.

The next day the CCSB crew took a tour of the aircraft carrier USS Midway. Again coincidently, Jim served on Midway’s sister ship the USS Coral Sea with Attack Squadron VA-22. With the two ships being identical, it was quite the nostalgia trip to stroll through the decks and passageways and get up close and personal with aircraft as he did 40 years earlier. Judy’s late father was a retired Master Chief Petty Officer who served on both the USS Midway and USS Coral Sea.

Following the Midway tour, the group pro- ceeded to the Corvette Diner for lunch. Coincidently yet again, Jim realized that the Corvette Diner was located on the old Naval Training Center base where he spent 12 weeks in Boot Camp 46 years earlier. The base has been closed for many years and re- designated for civilian and commercial use, hence the Corvette Diner.

For Jim and Judy it was definitely an unexpected but pleasant journey into the past.

Editorial Column Fred Smith

Privacy Reminder I am continuing this column this month because more needs to be Old Club Rosters should be shared with all our members on the same subject as last month.. shredded not just thrown in

the trash when replaced. Last month I covered the story of the death of a man and his dog due to being locked in his C6 without the knowledge of the escape tools that are part of the cars design. Founding member Ed Clerkin sent the below information as a follow-up.

Regarding this newsletter blurb: If you get locked out of the C6 and you are on the outside of the car there is a key hidden in your key fob (2008—2013). There is a keyhole just above your Credit for the included photog- license plate between the two license plate lights. Look for it. raphy goes to the attendees of our events and regularly include: You can’t get the car to start from there but if you left something important that needs retrieval with the dead battery that is a Roger Hoyt, Sandy Halverson, Sharon & Fred Smith, Jim Pur- way in. cell, Fred Lopez, Ivy Aanderud & Paul Zemella I would also add this pertinent information:

If your C6 is having issues either unlocking the door or starting the vehicle with the key fob nearby, chances are the key fob battery is going dead. Once inside your C6, open the glove box and push your fob into the slot provided on the left hand side of the glove box (dash portion) - it should snap into place. This places the fob as close as possible to the wireless module that controls access to the vehicle. Start the vehicle and drive imme- diately to your nearest parts store or dealer parts department and replace the battery.

NOTE: These fobs have a tendency of breaking when sepa- rating the fob in half for battery replacement so be prepared to shell out $120 for a new fob. I would suggest replacing the bat- tery in the #2 fob at the same time.

Editor’s note: I have used the feature Ed refers too and it does work. The fob needs to fit in that slot in a particular manner so check your owner’s manual. As for the fob easily breaking, I can also attest to that issue however the cheap guy that I am, I used “strapping tape” and it has held together for several years now.
