PRINCIPAL’S PIECE 14 AUGUST 2013 Dear Parents and Caregivers The first two weeks of the term have been busy with a number of sports events and trips which included the Aoraki Secondary Sports Netball Championships, Year 7 and 8 Winter Tournament, Aoraki Secondary Schools Badminton Tournament, Mountainview High School Exchange and the Japanese exchange. All these events would not be as successful without the hard work of those who organise them, the efforts of the students and the commitment you have as parents to your children and the College. I thank you for that.

We had our Year 7 and 8 Parent/Teacher Interviews which were preceded by a meeting where the teachers explained aspects of what they do including information about how we assess for National Standards. From my point of view I thought the classroom meetings went well and allowed the focus of the Parent/Teacher interviews to be on the students. Please let us know if you have any comment to make about these.

In the Press this week a summary of our NCEA results was published along with all other Canterbury schools. This gives another aspect of the College and arguably what we are about. This summary does not show the effort by each of the students, their parents, the teachers and deans. We continue to develop ways to lift the standard of attainment of our students. Part of this is for students to develop confidence in their abilities and a desire to do the best they can.

Last Friday we had the finals of the Year 7 & 8 and Year 9 & 10 speech competition. The speeches were of a high standard which highlights another skill that students may need at school and in the future. Another important aspect is developing the students to be ready for their next step in learning. Students need to explore what careers they think they would be interested in and then look at paths to these careers. The Year 10 students have had some careers education over the last few weeks. On Thursday, 15 August the Year 11 Careers Evening is being held. This is an important journey for your child and another area as parents you can assist greatly in. While you may not know all information regarding the careers, you know your child.

These are some of the things that make College the school it is. We are a community school and this is the theme of our College Fair that will be held on Saturday, 21 September. The fair will be on the College grounds and there is an expectation that students will be here helping to showcase that sense of community. If you are able to assist or have any ideas, goods or services that you are willing to share with us please let me know.

UCE THAILAND VISIT - 11th to 29th OCTOBER 2013 Following our successful short term programme with the UCE Thailand Group in April we are holding the same programme again in October. Students will be aged 11-18 years approx. Those that are U15 are doubled up while single placements are made for those that are older. There are restrictions on opposite genders, depending on age, in the home but this can still be a good chance as a fundraiser for your son/daughter if they are attending a school tournament/exchange etc. Board of $200 per week per student will be paid. Students will need all meals provided. Students will have a programme at school each week day involving learning English, learning about , experience of NZ school life and of the local district through activities and trips. Weekends are generally yours to do with what you wish and gives you time to share your unique NZ culture with your international visitors. If you would be keen to host a Thai student or two for two and a half weeks please contact [email protected].

FLOPPETS As a part of the Young Enterprise Scheme, four year 13 students have created their own business and obtained a product, "Floppets", which they aim to distribute locally and also around New Zealand. Chanaide Fulton, Charlie Suyker, Shally Nacis and Darren Ritchie, who recently won the Young Enterprise "Dragons Den" in Christchurch, have imported the small toy in hope of selling it throughout the country, while also gaining valuable business experience. Floppets are a small, children’s, collectible toy which can be attached to backpacks, glasses, key-chains, jandals and many other places. The Floppet consists of a small rubber figurine with a Velcro strap on the back. The students have been marketing the product locally and also have aspirations of making nationwide sales. Floppets can be purchased in Methven from FourSquare Supermarket, Hammer Hardware and also the school office. They are also available in at Mobil Petrol Station and in Ashburton at Paperplus. For the rest of the term, the team will focus on trying to win the Canterbury Young Enterprise Scheme, in hope of competing for the national title.

SCHOOL SPEECH COMPETITION Congratulations to the following students who excelled at our recent Speech Competition:

Junior Speech Competition – Year 7/8 1ST - Edmund Fordyce 2ND - Danielle Chalk 3RD - Kristie Hunter-Letham Highly Commended - Alisa Ikenaga, Hayley Riordan, Ben Innes, Duncan Callaghan and Ellie Boekholt

Intermediate Speech Competition – Year 9/10 1st - Jessie Jacobs 2nd - Brooke Sandys 3rd - Thea Valmores Highly Commended - Hugh Sandlant, Anna Ikenaga, Mel Haworth, Isabella Roberts and Ethyn Sturm SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE VOYAGE #648 - Once in a lifetime opportunity From the 7th to the 16th July I went on the Spirit of New Adventure Youth Development Voyage, it took me from to the Hauraki Gulf where I experienced the best of Waiheke Island, Coromandel as well as a breath-taking

trip over to Great Barrier Island. During my 10 Days I learnt a lot of new skills such as how to sail the ship, navigation, cleaning! (which was a must do every morning, especially due to such a confined space!), being a more effective group member as well as gaining new leadership experiences.

While sailing I managed to come across a range of new experiences, which I know I will keep forever. One of the big ones being the major sea sickness on day 4. I still look back on this moment as an enjoyable experience. Some things you defiantly have to take in your stride. On voyage 648 we got the opportunity to have a stunning late night bonfire on the beach, climb to the top of the Midship mast (Royal), with the added extra of walking along the Top Gallant yard, hanging at the very front of the boat (Bow) as well as experiencing the many qualities the ocean has to offer such as the Yard Swing, early morning swims and the numerous spotting of dolphins swimming by. The voyage allowed me to take a break from normal life and experience something completely out of the ordinary. I know that I will take the skills I learnt on the boat and use them whenever I can in everyday life.

By far the most important part to me on this trip was meeting so many new friends, weird to think that I could easily have missed out on such an amazing opportunity, but now knowing that I have made lifelong friends from around the country. The new friends, skills, experiences and leadership qualities are what I want to keep hold of forever.

Make sure you make most of all the opportunities while you still have them, things like this are something that is worth the time and money, just give it a decent shot! The more you put in the more you will get out of it 

For more information go to http://www.spiritofadventure.org.nz/, or feel free to come and talk to me about it, you won’t regret it! Alex Holmes - Head Boy
