And more! Letter From the President Dear Friends, Change is in the air and it signifies the coming of a new season, among other things. And, as you know, changes are taking place within the healthcare industry. At MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital we continue to navigate through the uncertainty by keeping a solid focus on our vision to be the trusted leader in caring for people and advancing health.

Our hospital strives to be a High Reliability Organization. This means that while we work to improve the safety in our organization, we also prepare for challenges and take the lead with solutions. We work to help our industry evolve in order to meet today’s ever- growing demand for new services, improved patient experiences and efficiency of cost. With the current economic uncertainty, we fully understand how important that last item Christine R. Wray, FACHE is to you. President, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital Senior Vice President, MedStar Health One of the ways we do this is through our partnerships with other MedStar Health hospitals. For example, we are able to bring specialists to our community to help fulfill needs such as in pediatrics. In fact, this issue’s cover story introduces our new MedStar Georgetown University Hospital pediatrician who will be opening a practice here soon. We’ve also added specialists to our Imaging Department. The two newest radiologists to join our staff from Center Radiology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center bring new services (see back cover) as well as convenient care close to home.

Kenneth A. Samet, FACHE Other conveniences include expanded hours and call-ahead appointments at Express President and CEO, Care in Charlotte Hall to help reduce wait time. In addition, two new nurse practitioners MedStar Health are now on staff at Express Care.

What is your philosophy as a pediatrician?

My philosophy is simply to do the best I can for every child and his or her family; to provide evidence-based, compassionate, and ethical standards of care to each child equally regardless of background; and, although we may not always be in agreement, to form an alliance with families in which the goal is the child’s well-being. As a pediatrician, my role is to support not only the child but also his or her family in providing a happy, healthy and safe environment in which children can succeed and excel.

Securing Patient Safety 15 MedStar St. Mary’s received a 2013 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ from HealthGrades®, a leading independent online resource that helps consumers search, evaluate, compare, and connect with physicians and hospitals. As a 2013 award winner, MedStar St. Mary’s is in the top 10 percent of hospitals in the nation for patient safety excellence and recognized as a hospital with the lowest occurrences of 14 preventable patient safety events. On average, patients hospitalized in a Patient Safety Excellence Award™ hospital were 52 percent less likely to experience one of 14 patient safety events compared to lowest-performing hospitals. The award from HealthGrades® helps reinforce the hospital’s commitment to patient safety. It is a top priority and we continually strive to enhance the layers of safety that already exist. Recurring back pain shouldn’t be ignored. That’s the advice George Kennett of Avenue, Md., gives all his friends who complain of aches. George no longer suffers after undergoing a laminectomy spine surgery at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital earlier this year. When nerve root compression left him in unbearable pain, George was thrilled to read that Usman Zahir, MD, of the MedStar Georgetown Orthopaedic Institute, is performing spine surgeries at MedStar St. Mary’s right in Leonardtown. “I was blown away,” said George who learned about Dr. Zahir in an issue of Healthy Living. From the moment George met Dr. Zahir, he was impressed. Not only do the two have some things in common - both are avid bicyclists and alumni of St. Mary’s Ryken High School and the University of Maryland but according to George, “Dr. Zahir is dynamic, young, well spoken and educated in the latest advancements in surgery.” Adding to his first impression, George put it frankly, “Dr. Zahir has an awesome bedside manner.” 16 George had a long history of back pain stemming from a fall he took in his 20s.
