FRIENDS OF COLTISHALL & SPIXWORTH SURGERIES The Friends held their Annual General Meeting on Thursday 11 th April 2013. The chairman, Mrs Margaret Montgomery welcomed those present and continued with her report for the year. This showed that there had been several more donations to the Friends than previously. Generally speaking, the staff at the surgeries are being well appreciated for the work that they carry out. The secretary, Mrs June Grey announced her resignation and Mrs Christine Hubbard offered herself for election to that post. The treasurer, Mr Colin Wooton was unavoidably absent and our examiner Mr David Owen presented the pre- prepared balance of accounts. Mrs Gisela Revill presented her report on the publicity activities of the year. Mrs Nikki Crawford, the Practice Manager, said that the work of the Friends was very much valued by the staff and meant that more and more patients from the catchment area could now be treated locally and not so often have to go to attend hospital appointments – a great saving for the patients on both time and cost of transport. At the election of officers, the following were confirmed:- Chairman – Mrs Margaret Montgomery; Vice Chairman – Mrs Daphne Knight; Treasurer – Mr Colin Wooton; Secretary- Mrs Christine Hubbard; Publicity Officer – Mrs Gisela Revill; Comm ittee Mem bers – Mrs Jean Pilkington; Mr & Mrs David and Carole Lumley; Mr David Revill; Mrs June Grey; Mrs Janot King and Mrs Rosemary Fawcett. During AOB the Friends were rem inded that the forthcoming Quiz Night on Saturday 18 th May would start at the revised, earlier time of 7pm, with doors open at 6.30pm and that the tables would have either 6 or 8 members to a team, player’s choice. Open Day on the horizon

Preparations are underway for opening up the site to the people of Badersfield, who live closest to the site. On Saturday 25 th May we will be holding an Open Day so that people can see what the site has to offer. Between 10am and 4pm we plan to have bus tours taking people around the site to see the main areas of interest and there will be archive footage of the former base being shown in one of the hangars. In addition, there will be an opportunity for local residents to tell their personal stories about the site as well as present any ideas they have for the future of the former base.

We will be writing to 400 households in early May to invite them to the Open Day and provide more information on how to book a place on one of the scheduled tour buses which will be on a first come first served basis.

12 Rotary Club of Broadlands Annual Celebration of the Formation of the Rotary Club of Broadlands Members and Guests recently celebrated the 39 th Anniversary of the formation of the Club in 1973. A social event was held at The Old Rectory Hotel in at which we were entertained by Wing Commander (Rtd.) Ken Wallis. Many

people remember Ken Wallis for his adventures with his famous Autogyros and his involvement in the James Bond film “ You only live twice”. He spoke about his life and passionate interest in all things mechanical from motorcycles, cars, powerboats to aircraft of various types. Not only building, but driving, sailing and flying the various machines. He also designed miniature pistols and cameras used during his period of wartime service in the RAF. All this in the days long before the sophisticated equipment in use today. A truly remarkable gentleman. We have interesting speakers at most of our weekly club meetings so if you would like to get involved in the local community, and also make new friends, why not have a look at our new website at www.rotaryclubofbroadlands.org.uk or ring Richard Mayer on 01603 715796.

In reply to my article last month about the remains of The Norfolk Keel “Dee Dar”, Margaret Bird, the authoress of The Mary Hardy Diaries, contacted us at The Marlpit and has very kindly sent us copies of photographs of the remains of “Dee Dar”. Kernot a drawing by James Stark showing a Norfolk Keel sailing downstream past Harrison's Wharf on the Wensum in Norwich, with the Carrow Boom Towers in the distance. She is laden with timber. Please note the shape of the transom compared to “Dee Dar’s” transom above.

In a commentary by Margaret Bird, Mary Hardy and her World (yet to be published), she will have a study of Keels and Wherries in the final volume. The keel is a really fascinating subject, and Theole Douglas Sherwood's thesis on Dee Dar and the keel generally is excellent. A copy is in the Norfolk Heritage Centre in Norwich. Derek Allday

‘Calendar Girls’ by Tim Firth Our summer production will be ‘Calendar Girls’, based on the true story about eleven Yorkshire WI ladies who posed nude for a calendar to raise funds for the Leukaemia Research Fund. The story was made into a film in 2003 and the stage play was first performed in 2008 becoming the fastest selling play in British theatre history. The amateur rights to perform the play have been released for a period of time and we are pleased to be one of the groups taking up this opportunity. As the play opens, and we meet the characters, we learn that Annie’s husband John has been diagnosed with Leukaemia. After John’s death she and her best friend Chris want to raise money to buy a new settee for the waiting room at the hospital that treated John. They decide on the idea of an ‘alternative’ calendar and then have to persuade other WI ladies to pose with them for it. The resulting play is full of emotions, extremely funny, sad and uplifting. So please come along to the Tithe Barn, Horstead. Wednesday 26 th , Thursday 27 th , Friday 28 th and Saturday 29 th June 2013 Performances 7.30 p.m.

25 Help us find these aliens in Norfolk Humans are increasingly moving species outside their natural range, sometimes deliberately and some- times accidentally. In the absence of their natural enemies, some species can spread rapidly and cause problems. These species are termed “invasive”. Invasive non-native species are considered to be one of the most important causes of biodiversity loss worldwide, second only to habitat destruction. They can also have significant economic impacts. In 2011, the total cost of invasive non-native species on the British economy was £1.7 Billion. Himalayan Balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) Description: An annual herb up to 2m in height with pink / purple, slipper shaped flowers, a fleshy stem and explosive seed heads.Where to look: Prefers to grow in damp areas, and is particularly abundant on river banks where it out-competes native vegetation. Why is it a problem? Fast growing, quickly becomes the dominant species in an area. Die back in winter leaves river banks bare and susceptible to erosion.

Australian Swamp Stonecrop (Crassula helmsii) Description: Can be aquatic and terrestrial. Small round fleshy leaves arranged along the stem in opposite pairs. White flowers with small petals.Where to look: Found in a variety of habitats, have be submerged, emergent and terrestrial forms. Why is it a problem? Forms dense impenetrable mats, can grow 200 times faster than native pond plants and can easily smother and out compete other species.

Floating pennywort (Hydrocotyle ranunculoides) Description: This aquatic plant has characteristic kidney shaped leaves which can be free floating or emergent. It has fleshy stems and fine, white roots. Where to look: Emergent or floating on the surface of still or slowly moving freshwater. Why is it a problem? With a peak growth rate of 20cm per day, floating pennywort can rapidly dominate a water body!

Killer shrimp (Dikerogammarus villosus) Description: Up to 30mm in length, body curled and semi-transparent, may have striped pattern. Two cone shape projections on its tail are key distinguishing features. Where to look: Likes to live within colonies of zebra mussels, on wood, concrete, gravel and rope. Attracted to man made structures. Why is it a problem? A voracious predator, it kills a range of native species, including young fish, mayfly and caddisfly larvae. Has the potential to seriously alter ecosystems it invades.

Please tell us if you find any of these invasive alien species. Records should contain information about: What you saw (photos are a great help); When you saw it; Where you saw it (a grid reference if possible); and Who you are. For more information and to submit your records online, go to www.norfolkbiodiversity.org/nonnativespecies Or you can send and email to [email protected], get in touch by phone 01603 228977.
