PAC-10 ATHLETES TO DISPLAY TALENTS AT PAC-1O CHAMPIONSHIPS

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Pac-10 Conference Track and Field Championships (81st annual for men, 25th annual for women) continue in Tucson, Ariz., this Friday and Saturday, May 13-14. The University of Arizona will host the events at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.

Competition begins Friday, May 13 at 2:30 p.m. PT with the women’s hammer, while the women’s 1,500 meters will kick off the running events at 5:15 p.m. PT. The men’s hammer will get things underway on the second day of events on Saturday, May 14 at 3 p.m., with the rest of the day’s running events starting at 6 p.m. PT.

Admission is $10 per day for adults and $5 per day for youth and seniors. A two-day package is $15 for adults and $8 for youth and seniors.

MEET RESULTS... Live results will be posted throughout the meet and can be accessed through www.pac-10.org and www.arizonawildcats.com. Complete results following each day will also be posted on both websites.

HEPTATHLON/DECATHLON... UCLA collected 15 points in the decathlon while ARIZONA STATE tallied 23 points in the heptathlon to take early leads heading into this weekend’s Championships. WASHINGTON junior scored a career-best 7,742 points to capture the decathlon title. Junior Trent Perez, freshman Marcus Nilsson and sophomore Dominic Giovannoni !nished 3-4-5 for the Bruins. Arizona State senior Samantha Henderson won the heptathlon with a personal-best score of 5,470 points. Sophomores Keia Pinnick and Christabel Netty !nished second and fourth for the Sun Devils. ASU’s 23 points ties for the most points scored in the opening weekend by one woman’s team in Pac-10 history, equaling the 23 points posted by WASHINGTON STATE in 1999 and STANFORD in 1998.

LAST YEAR IN PAC-10 TRACK AND FIELD... OREGON won its fourth-consecutive men’s Pac-10 title, and 11th over- all, holding off a charge from USC at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif. The Ducks posted 168.50 points, while the Trojans !nished second with 156 points. Oregon senior won three individual titles, including the decath- lon (8154), long jump (7.81m/25-07.50) and 110 hurdles (13.54), becoming the !rst male athlete since Arizona’s Robert Cheseret in 2006 to win three events at the Pac-10 Championships. USC senior Ahmad Rashad captured two individual titles in the 100m (10.20) and 200m (21.05). At the NCAA Championships at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Eaton led the Ducks to a third-place !nish, behind his Conference record performance in the decathlon, where he scored 8457 points. Teammate senior posted a pair of national titles with victories in the 800m (1:45.69) and 1500m (3:47.94). ARIZONA STATE senior was also a double winner at the NCAA Championships, capturing titles in the shot put (21.97m/72-01.00) and discuss (59.06m/139-09). Eaton and Whiting earned Co-National Field Athletes of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while Wheating was selected as the National Track Athlete of the Year. For Eaton, this marked the second year in a row he was honored by USTFCCCA. ASU’s David Dumble was named National Assistant Coach of the Year. Oregon’s Wheat- ing was honored with Pac-10 Track Athlete of the Year, while Duck teammate Eaton and ASU’s Whiting shared the Conference’s Field Athlete of the Year honors. Arizona’s Nick Ross was named Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year after placing third in the high jump (2.17m/7-01.50) at the Pac-10 Championships, then followed with an identical leap to tie for seventh at the NCAA Championships. Oregon’s was named the league Coach of the Year for the second-straight season after guiding the Ducks to their fourth-consecutive Pac-10 title. Oregon’s Cyrus Hostetler, ASU’s Jason Lewis and Whiting earned Academic All-America !rst team honors from ESPN The Magazine, while Ore- gon’s Alex Wolff earned a second team selection.

The OREGON Ducks hauled in a record 215 points to capture their second-straight and fourth overall women’s title. The previous high mark was 189 points by UCLA set in 1997. The Ducks had 11 individual titles - Amber Purvis (100m/11.38; 200m/23.14), (400m/50.76), Anne Kesselring (800m/2:04.36), Zoe Buckman (1500m/4:15.95), Nicole Blood (5000m/16:06.74; 10000m/33:28.38), Claire Michel (3000 steeplechase/10:11.70), Jamesha Youngblood (long jump - 6.63m/21-09; - 13.30m/43-07.75) and Brianne Theisen (Heptathlon/5917) - and one relay title, 4x100 (43.27). Purvis and Blood were the only dual winners. ARIZONA !nished second with 109 points. For the Wildcats, it was their best !nish at the Pac-10 Championships since 1992. Arizona placed one through four at shot put - Julie Labonte (16.47m/54-00.50), Alyssa Hasslen (14.14m/46-06.75), Kelsey Jessup (14.07m/46-02.00) and Omotayo Talabi (13.72m/45-00.25) - and Liz Patterson won the high jump (1.86m/6-01.25). At the NCAA Championships at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., Oregon !nished second for the second-consecutive season, behind Theisen who success- fully defended her heptathlon title (6094). The Ducks’ 4x400 relay team won a championship with a time of 3:28.54. Ore- gon’s Keshia Baker was honored with Pac-10 Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 400m at the Pac-10 Champion- ships and placing fourth at the NCAAs with a time of 52.34. Teammate Brianne Theisen garnered Pac-10 Field Athlete of the Year. Theisen turned in a stellar performance at the NCAAs by defending her heptathlon title and running the !rst-leg in the 4x400 championship relay. Arizona’s Julie Labonte was named Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year after winning the shot put title at the Pac-10’s and !nishing fourth (16.59m/54-05.25) at the NCAA Championships. Oregon’s Vin Lananna was named Conference Coach of the Year for the second year in a row after guiding the Ducks to a second-place !nish at the NCAA Championships for the second-consecutive season. Nine-time All-American, Oregon’s Nicole Blood was a second team honoree for ESPN The Magazine’s Track and Field and Cross Country All-Academic Team. For Blood, it marked the third year in a row that she earned academic honors from ESPN The Magazine.
