Peterson, Ph.D. March 2008 ABSTRACT The Spiritual Discernment of George Whitefield Lynnette Bond This paper considers the ministry of the great British evangelist of the eighteenth century, George Whitefield, who preached to more people than any person up to his day. The subject of spiritual discernment is discussed with examples of characters from the Bible who exhibited this gift of discernment. The theological and moral climate of Great Britain and America prior to Whitefield’s time is examined to introduce the problems that Whitefield faced when he began his ministry. The thesis of this work is that George Whitefield’s gift of spiritual discernment can be clearly seen in his refusal to compromise in areas that he believed were essential theological truths and practices, in his sense of evangelical ecumenicity, and in his use of worldly means to accomplish heavenly goals. The enduring legacy of Whitefield’s ministry is covered along with an application for modern evangelicals to emulate Whitefield’s practices. ii CONTENTS Chapter 1 WHITEFIELD CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION Few evangelists in the history of the Church have been as popular in their own time and – yet largely forgotten in later generations as the great itinerant preacher of the eighteenth century, George Whitefield. Literally preaching himself to death by delivering approximately thirty thousand sermons on two continents, he pioneered outdoor preaching to thousands of people at a time, without the aid of amplification. This phenomenal man of great energy and conviction led the Great Awakening in Colonial America as well as the evangelical revivals in England, Scotland, and Wales. Most often, students of history have focused on the work of John and Charles Wesley and Jonathan Edwards; however, it was Whitefield’s work which was the most familiar to his contemporaries. Whitefield often commented that it was his desire to “let the name of Whitefield perish, but Christ be glorified .” It appears that his desire was realized due to the lack of knowledge about him by many modern students of popular history. When addressed, historians have focused on George Whitefield’s great preaching gift, as his most modern definitive biographer, Arnold Dallimore, has done. The definitive nineteenth-century biographer of John Wesley, Luke Tyerman, also completed a two-volume work on Whitefield in which he questioned many of Whitefield’s decisions but declared that his greatest gift was his godliness. Little attention has been given to his gift of spiritual 1 discernment which allowed him to be used by God to grow and change the Church. Spiritual discernment is a perceptive insight for making God-honoring and God-pleasing decisions. This gift of spiritual wisdom is evident in persons who show in their lives a single-minded goal of the glorification of God that eclipses other relationships and their own personal concerns. An examination of the ministry of the great evangelist, George Whitefield, illustrates his possession of the gift of spiritual discernment in his refusal to compromise essential theological truths and practices of the Christian faith, in his sense of evangelical ecumenicity, and in his use of worldly means to accomplish heavenly goals. This thesis will analyze the thoughts, writings, and actions of George Whitefield to make a case that he did indeed have a gift of spiritual discernment which showed in his ability to make godly decisions, even at a very young age. He was committed to the Reformed faith and, once he was convinced of its truth, he contended for it faithfully until his death in 1770. This treatment of his life will assume that the Reformed doctrines are the most biblical, evangelical and orthodox. This work will begin with a brief study of the nature of spiritual discernment as found in the Old and New Testaments. An examination of the theological climate of the eighteenth century will be beneficial to show the world in which Whitefield was entering. It will be necessary to focus on the nature of the Church of England at the time of Whitefield’s ministry to understand his actions

    George Whitefield— The Anglican Evangelist Lee Gatiss Lee Gatiss is the Director of Church Society, an Anglican Evangelical ministry based in the United Kingdom, and Adjunct Lecturer in Church History at Wales Evangelical School of Theology. He has studied history and theology at Oxford, Cambridge, and Westminster Theological Seminary, and trained for ministry at Oak Hill Theological College in London. Having served churches in Oxford, Kettering, and London, he is also the author of many books and articles on theology, biblical interpretation, and church history, and has a Ph.D. on the Hebrews commentary of John Owen. He is the Editor of the NIV Proclamation Bible (Hodder & Stoughton) and the new two-volume edition of The Sermons of George Whitefield (Crossway). It is wonderful this year to be celebrating the 300th birthday of the great English evangelist, George Whitefield. Whitefield is remembered as a great evangelical. By those who (somewhat mistakenly) consider evangel- ical religion to have begun only in the 1730s, he is hailed as a founding father of evangelicalism.1 His name has been honored and kept alive in recent years by evangelical Baptists and Presbyterians, but he has been strangely undervalued by those in the Church of England itself. Furthermore, his identity as an Anglican has, therefore, been somewhat obscured. Positively Anglican Yet Whitefield himself would have identified his churchmanship as classical- ly, positively, “Anglican.” As Jim Packer puts it, “like all England’s evangelical clergy then and since, Whitefield insisted that the religion he modelled and taught was a straightforward application of Anglican doctrine as defined in the Articles, the Homilies and the Prayer Book.”2 Or as Arnold Dallimore SBJT 18.2 (2014): 71-81.

He seemingly seized every opportunity, preaching over 18,000 sermons over the course of his life while traveling frequently between England, America, and Scotland. Whittier‘s poem, while recognizing that Whitefield was not without his faults, summarizes his ministry well with these words: ―Up and down the world he went / A John the Baptist crying, Repent!‖2 Beneath Whitefield‘s fiery passion and inexhaustible energy for the Great Commission was an evangelistic piety built upon Calvinistic theology and evangelical convictions about the nature of God and man. This paper will examine Whitefield‘s piety as it relates to his zeal for evangelism through the lens of his life and theology. And should we assume that the newer the translation the better? The book under review should give considerable help to those who are asking these and similar questions. In his Preface, Mr Macgregor gives his own experience: “As a young Christian I went to a church that used the Authorised Version (AV). However, on moving with my wife and family to a different area, we went to a church that used the Good News Bible (GNB) and the New International Version (NIV). This enticed me away from the AV for a while. At first these new versions appeared to be easier to read and understand. However, soon I began to notice serious discrepancies (that is, Old Testament references to Christ veiled or missing) in the GNB. This troubled me greatly. I stopped using it, but continued with the NIV, which seemed more reliable. However, as I studied it and compared it with the AV I had first used, I began to feel concerned. The NIV had verses missing, and later I found it had many words missing. Its rendering of some parts gave a completely different meaning. The more I read and compared, the more concerned I became. Also, like the GNB, the NIV was more difficult to commit to memory. I bought a Revised Authorised Version (called in the USA, and now here, the New King James Version (NKJV)).

Believing they had to control trade with the colonies to reap their economic benefits, English ministers wanted agricultural goods and raw materials to be carried to English ports in English vessels. In reality, Dutch and French shippers were often buying sugar and other colonial products and taking them to market around the world. To counter this practice, the Navigation Act of 1651 required all goods to be carried on English ships. Navigation Acts in 1660 and 1663 strengthened the ban on foreign traders as colonists could export sugar and tobacco only through England and three quarters of the crew had to be English. In 1673, the Revenue Act imposed a tax on American exports of sugar and tobacco. The English government backed these policies with force and expanded their merchant fleet on both sides of the Atlantic.

This impressive collection of essays had its genesis in the seventh and final one- day conference of the DrWilliams’s Centre for Dissenting Studies, which closed in 2015. John Coffey’s Introduction on ‘Sources and Trajectories in Evangelical Piety’ sets the context for the book and adds significant value to the volume. Coffey shows how the ‘introspective turn’ of early Puritan, Pietist, and evangel- ical spirituality along with stress on the necessity of the experience of conver- sion created a rich transconfessional movement centred on heart religion. Con- tinental and Anglican Pietists and early evangelicals were all indebted to the devotional literature of Puritanism with its emphasis on religious experience. The new evangelicals emerged within an established and widespread Euro- pean culture of heart religion that had been steadily disrupting confessional boundaries. Given the centrality of heart religion to the evangelical revival, unsurprisingly a trend can be observed in recent scholarship of viewing early evangelicalism as part of the wider Pietist movement that preached conver- sion from nominal or formal religion to heart religion. If polygenesis applies to the origins of Pietism, the same is true of evangelicalism. Inevitably, the diverse tributaries of evangelicalism (Lutheran, Calvinist, and Catholic; Puri- tan, Anglican, and Pietist) contributed to its pluralism (e.g. Wesleyan, Calvin- istic Methodist, and Moravian). The shared emphasis on religion of the heart was central to early evangelicals recognizing one another as participants in a transconfessional and transatlantic revival.
