Reporter - February 14, 2012 # 4387 ! 0 Stanley Cup winner Mike Keenan has agreed to coach Maccabi Canada’s hockey entry at the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel. Keenan will lead a team that is expected to include pros from the AHL and ECHL, as well as NCAA and junior-calibre players. They will face opposition from the United States, France and Israel as Canada tries to repeat its gold-medal performance from 1997 – the only time hockey has been a Maccabiah sport. “I’m really excited about it. It’s a place I’ve never been,” Keenan told The CJN. “It will be a new experience, a new opportunity to learn about [Israel] first hand. It will be very interesting.” The addition of Keenan gives Maccabi Canada’s hockey program instant credibility, said Alex Voihanski, general manager of the team and the primary person charged with finding players. Keenan is a highly respected hockey man whose experience in pressure-cooker situations is second to none. In addition to winning the Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994, he coached in the finals two other times and was behind the Canadian bench in the 1987 Canada Cup. That was a team that featured superstars Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Mark Messier in their prime – arguably the best Canadian team of all time, Voihanski said. -

Reporter - June 20, 2016 # 17643 ! 0 Bicycling in Tel Aviv FLICKR PHOTO Sylvan Adams’ goal is to turn Tel Aviv into “the Amsterdam of the Middle East.” He’s not dreaming about tulips or windmills, but bicycles. Adams, one of the top masters road and track cyclists in the world, envisions a Tel Aviv that is as bike-friendly as the Dutch capital. A Montreal real estate magnate who made aliyah in December, Adams has found a partner in the Jewish National Fund of Montreal (JNF) in helping make this a reality. The publicity-shy Adams, 57, has agreed to be the honoree of JNF’s annual Negev gala June 20. Proceeds will go toward the new Sylvan Adams Cycling Network, a project creating bike lanes between downtown Tel Aviv and its ever-expanding suburbs. Sylvan Adams Israel may still be thought of as an automobile- loving country, but cycling – for recreation and commuting – is becoming increasingly popular throughout the country, said Adams, a two-time world outdoor cycling champion in his age category. His most recent title was won at the World Masters Championship, held in Manchester, England, last November. Adams, who began cycling competitively about 20 years ago, is also a six-time Canadian and 15-time Quebec champion. -

To the extent that sport becomes captive to political corruption, it becomes an instrument to prop up tyrannies and to undermine the rule of law. Accordingly, there is a global public interest in establishing independent, democratic oversight of sport organisations\' compliance with legal and ethical standards. -- Abstract: The Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) is a worldwide association of legislators who have come together to combat corruption, strengthen democracy, and uphold the rule of law. We have sixty national chapters and individual members in almost every parliament of the world. Historically, we have focussed on issues such as anti-money laundering, anti-corruption in public procurement, and anti-kleptocracy at the highest levels of the state. In recent years, however, we have become increasingly involved in the struggle for sport integrity. Canoe Slalom
Tokyo 2020 media guide – canoe slalom Canoe slalom at the Kasai Canoe Slalom Centre July 25 – 30, 2021 CANOE SLALOM – A BEGINNER’S GUIDE The course contains 18–25 gates, each gate comprised of two hanging poles. The downstream gates are coloured green and the upstream gates are red. Competitors must navigate their boat down the course without touching the gate. As a guide, there will be either six or eight upstream gates. If the competitor's boat, paddle or body touches either pole of the gate, a time penalty of two seconds is added. If the competitor misses a gate, a 50-second penalty is given. The penalty seconds are then added to the time it took the competitor to complete the course to provide an overall time. In kayak, the competitor is seated and uses a double-bladed paddle, paddling on alternate sides. In canoe, the competitor uses a single-bladed paddle and sits with legs bent at the knees and tucked under the body, paddling on either the left or right side. In the Olympic Games, each competitor completes two runs in the qualification round and the faster time of the two runs gives the qualification result. The fastest time from the two heats runs for each athlete determines who will progress to the semi-final. The number of athletes in the semi-finals for each event is as follows: Men’s canoe: 15 Women’s kayak: 24 Women’s canoe: 18 Men’s kayak: 20 The ten fastest semi-finalists will compete in the final, and the ranking and the medallists will be determined based on their finals run alone. -

At Buckingham Palace, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II presided over the ceremony that launched the innovative Baton on the longest, most inclusive relay in Commonwealth Games history, covering over 180,000 km and every ocean and continent in the world. We were also delighted to welcome several new sponsors to the Commonwealth Games Family. Telstra became the fourth M2006 Partner, while Nestlé Peters were welcomed as a Games Sponsor.
