Our school is conducting a survey to find out what parents think of our school. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training that is conducted amongst a sample of ran- domly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parents’ perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. Approximately 30 per cent of parents will be invited to participate in this year’s survey. All responses to the sur- vey are anonymous. This year the Parent Opinion Survey will be conducted from Monday 23rd July to Sunday 26th August. The survey will be conducted online, only takes 10-15 minutes to complete, and can be accessed at any con- venient time within the fieldwork period on desktop computers, laptops, tablets or smartphones. The online sur- vey will be available in a range of languages other than English. These include: Arabic, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Chin (hakha), Hindi, Japanese, Somali, Turkish, Punjabi and Greek. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of Sept. Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like more information.

STUDENTS WITH ASTHMA Just a reminder to parents with students who have asthma that the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DET) policy requires that every student with asthma attending the school should have a written Asthma Action Plan completed and signed by the child’s medical practitioner, this plan will help your child to participate fully in school activities safely. If your child has an Asthma Action Plan, could you please provide a copy to the school.
We have emergency asthma first aid medication to be used as a backup for when students may not have their own puffer and spacer with them at the time, but ask that Parents/Guardians ensure their children have an adequate supply of appropriate asthma medication (including a spacer).
t is vital that staff know what to do for your child in an asthma emergency. With this in mind, it is extremely important that we have an up to date asthma action plan and current contact details for parents and guardians. It is also very important that you provide the school with a number of emergency contacts.
STUDENTS AT RISK OF ANAPHYLAXIS
To ensure our school manages students who are at risk of Anaphylaxis and meets the required legislative requirement we request the support of parent guardians to: Notify school of their child's allergies and provide appropriate medical information. Provide an adrenaline auto injector clearly labelled with child's name to the school. Promptly replace the child's adrenaline auto injector if it is used or out-of-date. Ensure that the school is notified of changes to the child's medical condition or emergency contact details. Provide an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis completed by the child's doctor. Provide any other medication indicated on the child's ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis and ensure that it is in date. Provide an updated ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis after a change in the health condition of the child, through annual (or as required) reviews by a medical practitioner or after an allergic reaction. Educate the child about their allergies and how to minimize the risk of exposure (such as not sharing food if allergic to food, or taking precautions when outdoors if allergic to insects). National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NDIA is an independent statutory agency. Their role is to implement the NDIS. Information for families and students who live in Outer Gippsland Area and are in one or more of the following categories: Students who are in one or more of the following categories have had their contact details provided to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to facilitate a smooth transition into the NDIS: Students receiving Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) funding for Vision Impairment; Students enrolled at a Specialist School exclusively for students with Moderate to Profound Intellectual Disability; Students with disability transport program (Specialist School Bus, taxi or conveyance allowance); Personal care support at school (Program for Students with Disabilities (PSD) funding at level 4, 5 or 6; and/or Medical Intervention Support (MIS)). How do I know if my child is eligible for NDIS? If your child meets the age, residency and disability requirements of the NDIS and you live in the Outer Gippsland Area your child may be able to access the NDIS. Outer Gippsland Area includes the following Local Government Areas (LGA’s); Wellington and East Gippsland When and how will parents be contacted? The NDIA start date in the above LGA’s is January 2019. The NDIA may contact you by phone or letter before January to begin the process of access to the NDIS. Please be aware that the NDIA will call from an ‘unknown’ caller ID num- ber. If they are not able to contact you they will send you a letter. The NDIA is contacting a large number of families so you may not be immediately contacted. Your patience is appreciated. What do I need to do after the NDIA contacts me? As the NDIS may fund supports and services in addition to what your child is currently receiving at school, we encour- age you to respond to the NDIA as soon as they get in touch. It is important to note the NDIS does not fund supports that relate to your child’s learning. These will still be the re- sponsibility of schools and the education system. If your child is eligible for the NDIS, you will be asked to work with the NDIA to develop a plan which will identify the services and support best suited to your child. What will change and what won’t? Your child will be assessed for need and may be eligible for a range of supports. For now, your child’s bus to school and support for personal care needs at school will continue to be delivered in the same way. If there are changes to arrangements in the future these will be gradual and we will talk to you first. For now there is no change. What if my child isn’t receiving personal care or transport? If you live in Outer Gippsland and your child is not currently receiving these services through the Victorian Govern- ment, and you believe they might be eligible for the NDIS, we encourage you to approach the NDIA to be assessed. You can contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110. What if I don’t live in Outer Gippsland? The NDIS is transitioning across Victoria, Local Government Area by Local Government Area from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2019. Hi, my name is Sophie Wilson; I am the new Secondary School Nurse at Maffra Secondary College. I work in the wellbeing team and I look at improving health outcomes for students concerning mental and sexual health. I have recently updated the health promotion plan and will use this to guide my work at Maffra Secondary College. I look forward to meeting everybody.

Doctors in Schools We are very pleased to announce the Doctors in School program has successfully started with the lunchtime launch on Monday the 23rd July. The launch was a great hit, with free sausages as well as live music with Dr Stuart Anderson on drums and Year 12 student Kobey Dorber on vocals and guitar. Year 9 student Aleara Leon-Robbins did the acknowledgement of country and outlined the doc- tor’s services, which are: Kelly Duncan That it is a free and confidential service. Here every Monday from 9.00am - 1pm. 30 min doctor appointments are available. Book on compass for appointments, or drop in at recess. Examples of what you can see them for are: if you are feeling down, if you are feeling unwell, if you want to talk about health options.

SCIENCE NEWS
Kristen Raine SWINBURNE SCIENCE EXPERIENCE 2018 Over the school holidays, four year ten students went to Melbourne for three days to visit Swinburne University to participate in the Conoco Phillips Science Experience. Whilst there, we participated in many activities covering many fields of science. We watched physics, chemistry and astrophysics demonstrations and got involved in many hands on activities. One amazing opportunity was that we got to visit the Synchrotron, where electrons are sped up to nearly the speed of light, and the light energy this emits is studied and utilised to better sciences that affect everyday people. We were surrounded by knowledgeable people who were keen to share that knowledge including; professional astronomer, Alan Duffy. The YSA (Young Scientists Australia) staff who ran the event were all really nice and had plenty of mind games to share with us, making us think, as well as being entertaining during our breaks. These were definitely one of our favourite things about the trip. They also had plenty of tips and information about life at university. Overall we all really enjoyed ourselves, and if we had the opportunity, would go back again next year.

FED UNI DNA WORKSHOP
On Monday, 23rd July, our senior biologists had the opportunity to manipulate DNA in a DNA Techniques Workshop held at Federation University Churchill. Students were able to use the equipment and techniques commonly used in a molecular laboratory and had a taste of what studying Microbiology and Genetics at University would be like.

Leadership at MSC Profiles Senior School Leaders Adelle O’Doherty and Michael Airey were voted School Captains for 2018 by the whole school commu- nity. They have been working behind the scenes to build the profile of the students leadership teams right across the school and have been the forerunners in running a student led assembly and weekly senior briefings. Adelle O’Doherty (School Captain) For two years prior to her current role of School Captain, Adelle O’Doherty represented the student body on School Council, and from there decided to continue her contribution through student leadership. Adelle expresses that she loves Maffra Secondary College and wants to give back as much as she can and do what she can to keep improving it for future students. Her Captain’s speech inspired many students and especially resonated with the year 7 girls who connected with the message, “Believe you can and you will”. Adelle has valued the opportunities the school has provided her both in school and extra curricula. She is a keen participant in all sports days and school competitions, with highlights being hockey. She also plays the clarinet and has regular lessons before school with the music department. Adelle has drawn inspiration from her experience walking Kokoda with the school in 2016. Empowered by that experience she identifies the importance of mindset over physical capabilities,“ the mental training is what keeps you going”. With her goals set on a career in Health Sciences, Adelle’s love of chemistry and learning about the world around us will see her on track.

Michael Airey (School Captain) Michael has always been interested in leadership and draws inspiration from leaders around him. He believes to be a good leader you need to be able to follow, as it allows you to step back, observe and learn how to connect with people. Often this may mean adjusting your style to the situation. Michael has experienced this through many years in the Cadets which has also set him up for his goal of becoming a pilot in the Royal Australian Airforce, specialising in the C17 Globe Master. Working towards this goal Michael enjoys flying, the cadets, motorbike and bike riding and bushwalking. He works for the cadets on a community and volunteer basis and is a reliable and inspiring leader for aspiring students coming up through the ranks. Michael’s philosophy is “The key to everything is patience, you get the chicken by hatching the egg not by smashing it”. He applies this to his approach to learning and leadership.

Leader Profile: Jack McIntosh: Thompson House Captain (Go Gold!) Currently completing his VCE, Jack McIntosh hasn’t let the discipline of study deter his enthusiasm for the sport he has played for 7 years, volleyball. Jack has ended his Maffra Secondary School Volleyball team experience on a high note, taking out Gold, with the team, in the Victorian Schools Cup. While Jack is not unaccustomed to success on the volleyball court, holding 5 gold and 3 bronze medals for the school, along with other sporting accolades as he has played for East Melbourne, Gippsland, Maffra Volleyball Club and the Victorian State Squad (under 17 and 19) where he was Captain in 2017, he acknowledges that the sense of achievement is greater than the win itself. Volleyball is about the team, the encouragement, support, appreciation of skill, and working as a group. “You can never win a tournament alone- you need 6 working together- it’s a team game,” Jack states, “You are as strong as your weakest player,” so words of encouragement, coaching and guiding new players is as important as excelling on the court. This attitude has positioned Jack as a good leader in our school community, while his athleticism keeps him excelling on the Volleyball court, his attitude that sport is important for school because it helps you bond, gets you connected, communicating and committed is what got him selected as Thompson House Captain, and it is this attitude that supported his team to win Gold at the Victorian Schools Cup. NEWSLETTER — SENIOR YEARS In the Senior Years, students are continuing to strive to focus upon improving their study habits by utilising the many learning skills and techniques they have been introduced to over Semester One in the Learn to Learn sessions. As a Senior Team we are supporting this learning growth through the monitoring of student study patterns in the VCE Study Centre and encouraging students to achieve set outcomes with short term goals. Term 3 is a time of completing prescribed curriculum in Unit 4 for our Year Lorena Hayward 12 students (and some Year 11’s) and supporting our Year 11’s to achieve coursework goals. It is inspiring how focussed our students are on their individual educational improvement and the general air of aspiration that is developing as time goes by this year. Guest Speakers In Learn2Learn we have had the privilege of recently hosting past students of MSC, Megan Raine and Josh Johnstone. Both have had significant success in their career pathways and were delighted to share their educational (and life) journeys with the students. A common factor with Megan and Josh, was their ability to learn to develop study habits that suited their needs while at school. Both were very aspirational, however, found they had to address negative study habits and replace them with ones that worked for them, a process of trial and error. They advocated the need to ‘get real’ and confront the challenges, accept the need to work hard to achieve academic goals and to learn to balance life and study. The message was strong and well received by our students. Open Days University Open Days are running throughout Term 3 and can be readily accessed by our students with some simple planning. Pamphlets and information are available from the Senior Years Study Centre, the
Careers Office and VCE teachers. We highly recommend all VCE students attend as many Open Days as they can, due to them being invaluable in showcasing what the Universities have to offer for the coming year. They provide course knowledge, general information and fun activities for all students to participate in. Open Days are exciting, stimulating and ‘open students minds’ to the world beyond Secondary College! Parent Teacher Interviews Parent Teacher interviews will be conducted for students studying VCAL and VCE Units 3 and 4 on Wednesday 15th, 4.30-6.30pm in the school library. These are an essential part of the Year 12 year as it is time set aside solely with the purpose of discussing how students can optimise the remainder of their time prior to the exams in Term 4. Celebrations There are ongoing celebrations of student achievement throughout the year. This term we have held a third Pancake Morning where students ate pancakes at recess and enjoyed the ambience of the group in a relaxed and enjoyable manner. Academic success was celebrated with the top eleven, Year 11’s (and some Year 10’s) attending a lunch at Foster Place. As the term progresses more celebrations will recognise students in the Senior Years who are striving to improve and have a Growth Mindset! The top 10 Year 11 VCE students were rewarded with an afternoon tea to acknowledge their effort, organisation and academic growth. Lucy Capurso. Historical Overview…. How the Maffra Secondary College School Prom Began.
I thought you may be interested in this story... In 1989 when HSC was transitioning into VCE, SACS were 50% of our final year marks - exams the other 50%. (From memory) We could work in pairs on an English project (SAC) or individually. Myself and Leanne Backman decided we would do a School Prom. We organised the lot and Trish Newgreen was the first teacher to jump onboard along with a few others to supervise to make the night possible. It was held in the school gym and there was a school band at the time and they played and a great night was had by all! That is where the MSC School Prom originated from and it is still going 29 years on! Just 2 little old Year 11 students doing a project! Who would’ve thought! -and yes, it was called Prom. Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday appeal Rebecca Mackay (year 12) Adrienne Hume (year 11)
Towards the end of last year we decided we wanted to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal - we both have had experiences with the RCH and decided to give back. As we didn’t start till the end of the year, we were limited on time and options. We registered and booked in for the Maffra Christmas market and a Saturday sausage sizzle out the front of Woolworths (raising $256). Still wanting to raise more money, we spoke to Mr Hogan and Mr Wallace about a fund raising casual dress day with a gold coin donation for the charity (raising another $491) – VERY happy. Still not content, we wanted to do more, so on Good Friday we went out in our official MSC uniforms and door knocked from 9am until 12 noon. We then moved onto Horizon Food works where we shook the tins for another 4 hours (another $594 was raised). We are so thrilled that so many people donated and gave to the children that unfortunately don’t always have the same health as us. Overall we raised over $1350. Every cent was appreciated from both of us and those children who will benefit at the RCH. Thank you everyone for your support.
We cannot thank our families enough for supporting us in our fundraising efforts and all the help they gave us. We couldn’t have done it without them. They have been amazing. “It’s all about giving back a little bit for what we have receive”

MUSIC WALL Wow, what an amazing job Rebecca Mackay has done on her VCAL community project at Maffra Secondary College! The bright and fun music wall is a welcome addition to the junior playground at Boisdale Consolidated School.

Next time you see a chip packet lying on the ground have a think about how it got there and how long it’s going to be around in the future. This old school chip packet which blew across the school yard the other day is 35 years old! Just goes to show how long plastic hangs around for and the impact it has on the environment.
So when you have to dispose of your rubbish, do the right thing for the environment, for yourself and a future world you are heading in to, bin it and do your bit to help protect this earth.
BARN OWL RESCUED - Shane Jacobs
Maffra secondary college was visited by a barn owl Friday morning before school. I was lucky to come across him as he was getting attacked by about thirty crows on the oval and would have been killed for sure!, I guess that’s why they must call a group of crows “a MURDER of crows!”
He/she went for a visit to a local vet to get checked out and was deemed healthy with no major injuries then taken to a wildlife expert who specialises in Raptors and birds of prey for some care and to be released back out into the wild.

Volleyball News
Maffra Volleyball Three Day cup Debrief
We travelled down the freeway for two and a half hours (which is apparently a long way according to all the other schools) to compete in the 3 Day competition. Maffra Secondary College took five teams to the tournament including a Year 9 Girls team, two brand new Year 7 teams who were in their first three day competition and two Year 12 teams that had five players Garry Williams competing in their final three day tournament. Expectations were high after last year’s success but all teams knew that they had to be at their best if they wanted to receive gold again. After day one this dream was still alive where from a total ten matches we won eight. Our Year 9 Girls had the comeback of the tournament when they fought off 5 match points to win the second set and then kept on to win the match. A lot of spectators were asking if our Year 7 Boys team were actually in Year 7, so good was their standard of play. The Year 12 Boys were also improving greatly, especially the Year 9 boys who were playing in a competition against people three years older than them. They also had great role models with Jack, Walker, Mat and Mitch all playing really well and being very supportive. The Year 7 Girls team were also playing very well and were by far the loudest team I heard from our school, hopefully a sign of things to come. Our Year 12 Girls also came out undefeated after day one even after finding the competition a little bit more difficult than first anticipated. All teams returned to camp tired but really happy with how they played. Maffra were again showing how a small country school could match it with all the Melbourne schools.
Day two was met with similar success. At the end of the day all teams were still in medal contention with four teams in a great position to reach the gold medal. Our Year 7 Boys dusted themselves off from our late night loss the night before and were able to win two games to put us into the semi-finals. The Year 12 Boys had one win and one loss for the day against the same team but they stepped it up when they needed, winning the more important game to book their place in the gold medal playoff. Our Year 7 Girls played some more experienced teams but always pushed to get the win. They played really well and the improvements throughout the day were very impressive. A win the following day would mean a chance at a medal. Our Year 9 Girls were going from strength to strength and playing extremely good volleyball. This was commented on by a number of parents, staff and others in attendance. Our Year 12 Girls continued to notch the wins and were also getting the job done. Again a great day for all our teams who were ready to go deep into medal contention on the final day.
The final day would bring the hardest competition for all our players and teams. The day started with our Year 7 Girls looking to keep their medal chances alive. They played an extremely good first set but unfortunately went down 26- 24. From there the other team began to serve well and ultimately took out the match. While this resulted in the girls not getting a medal they never dropped their heads and always played in good spirits. Well done to Mia, Lil, Emily, Sophie, Milly, Taylor, Dimity, Ameilia and Hayley. Next came our Year 7 Boys who were looking to book their place in the gold medal match. We took on an Upwey team that was well drilled and more experienced. We won the first set and were up 20-10 in the second set. Unfortunately, their gun server came on and took the set from us. That took the qualifier to the third and final set which went back and forth in momentum. Having to win by two points proved really difficult and there was nothing splitting the two teams. The standard of this game was again great and a lot of the spectators were truly impressed by both teams. Unfortunately they went down by two points in the last set to put us in the Bronze medal match where we would face the other Upwey team. From here it was bit of a repeat where we took out the first set, lost the second one with a big comeback from Upwey and then a tight finish in the final set. Ultimately we just missed out on a medal but the Year 7 Boys played well above the standard I expected for this age group. Well done to Ben, Sam, Jimmy, Bayden, Craig, Brodie and Judd. It was then time for our Senior Boys to play. They knew at their best they could beat any team and that was what they had to bring. They started off slowly with a number of serves and spikes going wayward until they hit their straps in the middle of the first set. Walker and Mat started playing a big role in the match and ultimately changed the momentum in our direction. After winning the first set we kept going in the second to take the wind out of the oppositions sails. They went on to win the gold in two sets, a great effort considering there was only two top age players in the team and four students who are in Year 9. A great effort by the whole team. Well done to Jack, Walker, Mat, Mitch, Bevan, Darren, Lucas and Josh, the Year 12 Di- vision 1 Gold medallists.
Our attention then went to our Year 9 Girls who quickly breezed past PEGS in their last round match before the final. They had a very tough game against Kew on the first day and would be facing them again in the gold medal match. Again it was like watching the first game on repeat where we had to fight really hard to get the sets but ultimately come out victorious. They played so well and under immense pressure from other teams were able to hold their nerve and win the points when it mattered most. A great quality of all our Maffra Secondary College teams. Well done to Jas, Kalarni, Jade, Gabbie, Shae, Sophie, Olivia and Sarah, the Year 9 Division 1 Gold medallists. The final team to play was the Year 12 Girls. The game was again full of momentum swings and pretty much went point for point all the way through the match. At no point did they find the match easy and again when the pressure was on they delivered. They ended up winning the final set 15-11 and brought home Maffra Secondary College’s third gold medal. This really is a great achievement from these girls who again had a few players playing well below the age bracket. It also brought together a number of players who haven’t regularly played together and for them to adapt and succeed together was very pleasing to watch. Well done to Shae, Ella, Mikayla, Holli, Cassidy, Lisa, Bridie, Lucy-Belle and Chelsea, the Year 12 Division 1 Gold medallists.

All the students represented themselves and the Maffra community extremely well. It is an absolute credit to all the work the students, parents and volunteers have put in. I would like to thank all coaches (Martin Angliss, Gavin Oakley, Shae Oakley, Mariah Stone and Andrew McIntosh), all team managers (Tanya McIntosh, Jodie Underwood, Emma Williamson, Amy Leighton, Amy Jansen and Sandra Dekkers), all the parents who helped with travel and stayed on camp with us (Rosie Angliss, Debbie Newman, Leanne Caithness, Kim Simon, Cherie Walshe, Jess Allen, Tracie and Adrian Britton) and all the other parents, friends and supporters who came and cheered us on throughout the competition. Without all of your support the camp would not have been as successful as it was. Well done to all the players and I look forward to running more of these competitions in the future (keep an ear out for more competitions coming up shortly).
