DELAWARE RECORD-SETTER IS BASEBALL PLAYER OF YEAR

ORONO, ME.--University of Delaware junior third baseman Brian August, a hometown product, has been named AMERICA EAST's baseball Player of the Year in balloting by the conference coaches. A resident of Newark,DE., and a graduate of St. Mark's High School in nearby Wilmington, August this season has set a new school record for homeruns in a season with 20 and has tied the school mark for runs batted in with 12. In spearheading Delaware's drive to first place in the conference regular season standings, August batted .443 with 22 doubles and a of .909. In the field he accepted 144 chances with only eight errors. Twice this season he has belted grandslam homeruns and after three years of play his statistics show 35 homeruns and 193 rbi'a, good for second and third place all-time in the school record books.

riTCIIER, ROOKIE AND COACB ANNOUNCED

The Pitcher of the Year is University of Maine senior righthander Garrett Quinn of Skowhegan, ME., Rookie of the Year is Delaware freshman outfielder Kevin Mench of Newark,DE., and Coach of the Year is University of Maine first year mentor Paul Kostacopouloe. Quinn posted a 9-2 record during the regular season with a 3.13 earned average. He led the conference in innings pitched with 77.2 and in strikeouts with 78. In addition, Quinn was used as a designated hitter and compiled a .406 batting average with two homeruns and nine rbi's. Mench will set virtually all freshman offensive records at Delaware as he doubles and five triples. Kostacopoulos took over the reins at Maine from longt~e coach John Winkin and led the Black Bears to a second place finish in AMERICA EAST. Despite losing his three top pitchers to either transfer, academics or injury,he brought the Bears back to a near-.500 record after three losing seasons.

Delaware dominated the first team selections with six players named to the squad. Also named were two from Maine and one each from Drexel, Hartford and Towson state. The first team includes four players who were also first team selections in 1996 while three others moved up from last year's second team. The ~econd team includes two from Delaware, Drexel, Hartford and Northeastern and one each from Maine, Hofstra and Vermont. Three members of the second team are repeat selections from last season.
