My Dad, Angelo Bruno, worked in the deep, dark, damp coal mines of Northeastern Pennsylvania from the time he was 15 years old. Although a dangerous way to earn a living, it supported our family.

Typical coal miners had very little schooling and few marketable skills. It was a backbreaking job, but it provided a paycheck. My dad told me stories when I was a young girl about working far beneath the earth’s surface. It was riveting.
