Eric M. Uslaner University of Maryland–College Park Abstract: American Jews voted overwhelmingly for Barack Obama in 2012 despite strong Republican efforts to win their votes. Republicans charged that Obama was not sufficiently supportive of Israel and that Mitt Romney was closer to Jewish opinions on this salient issue. Republicans miscalculated. For most American Jews, Israel was not a key voting issue. American Jews were also closer to Obama on Middle East issues than they were to Republicans. There was also a cultural chasm between American Jews and the Tea Party, reflective of long-standing tensions between Jews and evangelicals. Using surveys of the Jewish vote and the full electorate, I show that this cultural divide was more salient for Jews than for other white voters — and that there is at least preliminary evidence that this cultural divide may be important for other minority groups. INTRODUCTION “What’s the matter with Kansas?” the journalist Thomas Frank (2004) asked. Kansans have a median income below the national average. While less affluent voters are more likely to be Democrats, Kansas is the fifth most Republican state in the United States.1 Kansas is Republican because it is socially and religiously conservative. More than a third of Kansans identify as evangelical Protestants compared I am grateful to Jim Gerstein for sharing his data with me and to him for many helpful comments and conversations.

Days later the campaign acknowledged to the Dallas Morning News that on that same Vegas trip Perry also attended a bachelor party that the male friends of his son, Griffin, held to celebrate the younger Perry’s upcoming wedding.1 Perry previously reported that casino owner Adelson contributed a $1,856 in-kind “event expense” to the Perry campaign on December 7, 2007. Perry’s campaign reported that one of its fundraisers, Krystie Alvarado, flew to Vegas a day earlier for a fundraiser. The campaign reported that Flatonia, Texas sausage magnate Danny Janecka then flew Governor Perry to Vegas on December 9, 2007 for a fundraiser.

» Newsletter SignUp About Advertising Contact Enter your email... Subscribe Most Influential: Kevin Faulconer ... And the rest of the list Our City is ending our list of San Diego's 20 Most Influential people with new Mayor Kevin Faulconer. He has become San Diego's Most Influential person. When we began compiling this list back at the end of 2013, the race to replace disgraced former Mayor Bob Filner was ongoing and it was unknown who would be leading the city. Now, of course, we know. Faulconer won easily over his opponent, freshman Council member David Alvarez. Faulconer won, but the honor brings its share of hurdles. First is continuing the work that interim Mayor Todd Gloria started, which is to bring stability and honor back to the office. Secondly, it is to lead the nation's eighth largest city at a time when many challenges face it, such as infrastructure woes, homelessness, a shortage of affordable housing, income inequality … Faulconer has stepped quickly into his new role. He's already spearheaded a number of initiatives to improve San Diego's neighborhoods, increase library and rec center hours and beef up public safety. He named Shelley Zimmerman as police chief, the first women in San Diego to hold that post. When the recent wildfires hit, he offered a calm and measured presence. His influence may well go beyond San Diego as well. He's the only Republican mayor of a major U.S. city. Other Republican politicians may look to his rise as a blueprint to achieve similar success. Recent Highlights He did so by taking a moderate approach on social issues.

  • HOTELS with CASINOS
05_089620_ch01.qxd 7/26/07 10:46 AM Page 36 PART ONE ACCOMMODATIONS and CASINOS WHERE to STAY: Basic Choices LAS VEGAS HAS AN ASTOUNDING INVENTORY of about 137,000 hotel rooms. Washington, D.C., by way of contrast has 31,000. Occu- pancy rates are over 98% on weekends and average 92% for the whole week, compared to a national average of 61%. By 2010 it’s projected that the number of rooms in Las Vegas will top 170,000. As the memorable line from Field of Dreams suggests, “If you build it, they will come.” THE LAS VEGAS STRIP AND DOWNTOWN FROM A VISITOR’S PERSPECTIVE, Las Vegas is more or less a small town that’s fairly easy to get around. Most of the major hotels and casinos are in two areas: downtown and on Las Vegas Boulevard, known as the Strip. The downtown hotels and casinos are often characterized as older and smaller than those on the Strip. While this is true in a general sense, there are both large and elegant hotels downtown. What really differentiates downtown is the incredible concentration of casinos and hotels in a relatively small area. Along Fremont Street, downtown’s main thoroughfare, the casinos present a continuous, dazzling galaxy of neon and twinkling lights for more than four city blocks. Known as Glitter Gulch, these several dozen gambling emporiums are sand- wiched together in colorful profusion in an area barely larger than a parking COPYRIGHTEDlot at a good-sized shopping mall. MATERIAL Contrast in the size, style, elegance, and presentation of the down- town casinos provides a varied mix, combining extravagant luxury and cosmopolitan sophistication with an Old West–boomtown deca- dence.
