  • Most Influential: Kevin Faulconer ... and the Rest of the List
» Newsletter SignUp About Advertising Contact Enter your email... Subscribe Most Influential: Kevin Faulconer ... And the rest of the list Our City is ending our list of San Diego's 20 Most Influential people with new Mayor Kevin Faulconer. He has become San Diego's Most Influential person. When we began compiling this list back at the end of 2013, the race to replace disgraced former Mayor Bob Filner was ongoing and it was unknown who would be leading the city. Now, of course, we know. Faulconer won easily over his opponent, freshman Council member David Alvarez. Faulconer won, but the honor brings its share of hurdles. First is continuing the work that interim Mayor Todd Gloria started, which is to bring stability and honor back to the office. Secondly, it is to lead the nation's eighth largest city at a time when many challenges face it, such as infrastructure woes, homelessness, a shortage of affordable housing, income inequality … Faulconer has stepped quickly into his new role. He's already spearheaded a number of initiatives to improve San Diego's neighborhoods, increase library and rec center hours and beef up public safety. He named Shelley Zimmerman as police chief, the first women in San Diego to hold that post. When the recent wildfires hit, he offered a calm and measured presence. His influence may well go beyond San Diego as well. He's the only Republican mayor of a major U.S. city. Other Republican politicians may look to his rise as a blueprint to achieve similar success. Recent Highlights He did so by taking a moderate approach on social issues.

What it is believable is what the young agents are saying to me: The DOJ is directly telling them not to proceed with investigations.

  • For Redistricting Commissioners, What's a Conflict of Interest?
For redistricting commissioners, what's a conflict of interest? By Timm Herdt Wednesday, July 20, 2011 In the spring of 2010, when he applied to become a member of the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, Gabino Aguirre of Santa Paula described himself as a "community activist" who had been an "advocate for a variety of causes." Aguirre survived the rigorous screening process conducted by the State Auditor's Office and was ultimately chosen as one of 14 commissioners selected from a pool that originally included 25,000 applicants. Now, with the commission poised to adopt political district maps that are certain to displease many Californians, Aguirre, one of five Democrats on the panel, has become the subject of sharp attacks from Republican Party leaders who accuse him of being a community activist who has been an advocate for a variety of causes. The attacks raise anew questions that the State Auditor Elaine Howle struggled with in 2009 as she developed guidelines and regulations for the selection of commissioners, a task with which she was charged under Proposition 11, the initiative that created the independent redistricting process. Kim Alexander, president and founder of the nonpartisan California Voter Foundation, said she believes the auditor "struck the right balance" in disqualifying those whose political connections were so strong as to make them potentially beholden to a particular party or politician while at the same time keeping the process open to those who had been engaged in civic activities. "No one involved in crafting this commission expected you to have applicants who had zero political involvement in their history," she said.

  • December 2018 Newsletter
December 2018 Newsletter Presidents Address December 2018: Many of you have asked me what I thought went so wrong with this last mid-term election. So many factors were involved, there are almost too many to count. More troubling to me than the voter fraud, that most assuredly took place, are the laws the California State legislature has burden us with in regarding voting and the registration of voters. Early voting, turning ballots in after election day, registration on the day of voting, vote harvesting, etc… all made legal by our State Legislature to their benefit to retain the quest for power. All of those different avenues for voting require a different method of counting and verifying the ballot. Those new laws coupled with some miscalculation by our candidates, mismanaged campaigns, being out spent 6 to one in some cases, lack of enthusiasm by some in our own party, failing to rally volunteers that were up against thousands of PAID campaign workers….it was just over whelming. We can come back from this, we have in the past. We do need new ideas and new leadership and we need to work smarter to get our message out. I have enjoyed being your President for the last 5 years and I am grateful for the opportunity to have done so. I am also grateful for your repeated confidence in me, and support in doing what we do. You are all unique, smart, determined, and talented ladies and I am proud to be associated with you. I’ve watched many of you blossom into activists who have done things you thought you never could.
