Carver, the executive director of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority has been working without a contract since October of 2007. Despite this, Carver has remained the Authority’s chief executive and in December of 2008 was reportedly asked by Governor Jon Corzine to remain the boss of the CRDA, one of the state’s most powerful agencies for an additional two years. Republican Assemblymen Vince Polistina and John Amodeo have called on the Governor to settle the contract issue and restore stability to the CRDA leadership as it deals with potential investors by either renewing Carver’s contract or moving in a different direction. Sources say that Governor Corzine has at least flirted with the idea of replacing Carver with a very prominent and politically connected Atlantic City attorney. Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford appears steadfast in his resolve to name a Public Safety Director whose authority would usurp the powers currently under the purview of Police Chief John Mooney and Fire Chief Dennis Brooks. Various names have surfaced as candidates for the position, including former Deputy Police Chief Willie Glass, current Deputy James J. Leonard Jr., Esq. Police Chief Ernest Jubilee, former PBA President Don Hurley and current Emergency Services Director Tom Foley. Sources say that Langford may also be considering candidates from outside the city. Mooney and Brooks have indicated their existing contracts preclude Langford from naming a Public Safety Director and have threatened litigation in the event that he does. A Full Service Litigation Firm Langford’s legal team has denounced the language in those contracts as being “unenforceable”. While this quagmire is likely heading to Court in the coming months, can someone please see R to it that the ability to park ones vehicle on the north side of Iowa Avenue outside of the Criminal Law Baltimore Grill is restored? Whoever can accomplish that has our vote. When the FBI recently arrested 44 individuals in a massive statewide corruption scandal, Municipal Court / DWI the rogue’s gallery and the nature of the charges were extremely diverse. Ranging from the proverbial $10,000.00 cash payoff inside a diner (hasn’t this been done before?) to the sale of Traffic Matters black market kidneys from third world countries (I can’t even touch that one), prominent North Family Law • Divorce Jersey rabbi’s and businessmen, the mayor’s of three municipalities and a state legislator from Ocean County were all forced to do the perp walk much to the delight of the Newark Star Ledger. Personal Injury Lost in all of the hoopla was that not one of the 44 accused was named Callaway or had any Immigration Law connection to Atlantic City. Speaking of connections to Atlantic City, how does the city who famously bungled its 83-year Casino Licensing old partnership with the fabled Miss America Pageant in 2004 allow the World Monopoly Championship to take place in Las Vegas? That’s like the White House Sub Shop packing up and setting up shop in Buena. Let’s bring back Miss America (especially if she looks like Katie Stamm, see page 12) and let’s get the World Monopoly Championship out of the desert and bring it back to the Boardwalk. He was earning a decent living Iworking the clubs, but there had to be more. He was beginning to develop a love-hate relationship with the lifestyle—loving the money he earned (he was now up to $1,000 a week) but hating the travel and loneliness that came with the territory. “There isn’t a lonelier life in the world,” he said later. “I was always a stranger in town.” Out in Hollywood, Frank Sinatra was in the midst of his spec- tacular comeback, filming From Here to Eternity. The onetime Bobby Soxer idol had seen his career nearly destroyed, first by losing his voice and then by leaving his wife for Hollywood sexpot Ava Gardner. Sinatra’s tempestuous relationship with Gardner had alien- ated his fans, and a string of forgettable movies hadn’t helped Sinatra’s cause. But his role as the doomed Maggio in From Here to Eternity would earn Sinatra an Oscar and single-handedly resuscitate his career. Just a year before he had been performing for half-empty crowds in Vegas and begging for TV work; now, he was selling out the Paramount. It was 1942 all over again. Sinatra was unstoppable. Joey had always admired Sinatra from afar. Who didn’t? Although they had never worked together on the same bill, Joey and Frank had played some of the same clubs through the years, sometimes missing each other by a matter of days or weeks.

Joseph Levitch was a comic who lip-synched to records, while singer Dino Paul Crocetti worked the nightclub circuit. Serendipity brought them together during concurrent bookings in the Catskills; and, on July 25, 1946, Joseph and Dino—better known as Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin—teamed up as a duo act at Atlantic City’s 500 Club. Dean and Jerry … What Might Have Been sheds light on a more innocent time, when the unlikely pairing of a vaudevillian and a crooner charmed a war-weary audience craving light entertainment. Their shtick clicked, and they soon achieved top billing on radio and TV, in films and clubs, with frequent appearances on NBC’s popular Colgate Comedy Hour. But, eventually, egos intruded and their harmony became increasingly dissonant. On July 24, 1956, precisely ten years after their debut, they performed together for the final time. And they didn’t speak to each other again for over two decades. The actors in Orillia’s studio theatre echo the same camaraderie and delight in each other’s talent of the early days of Martin and Lewis. With a deep appreciation for the American Pop Standards, Derek Marshall has been singing for over 20 years in jazz and blues clubs, casinos and symphony halls throughout North America and Europe. A devotee of Frank Sinatra and his infamous Rat Pack, he gravitated naturally to the distinctive style of Dean Martin.
