The Pathwest laboratory continued to have a significant involvement in the program through provision of laboratory services for key components of the surveillance program for detection of arboviruses of public health significance to the State. We also acknowledge and thank the Population Health Units and the Western Australian Country Health Service for their role in reporting and follow-up of human cases of disease, and especially the role of Local Governments in the management of mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit. These organisations play an active role in the provision of data, case follow up investigations, care and bleeding of chickens for the sentinel chicken program, trapping of mosquitoes, mosquito control treatments and advice to the Western Australian community about disease risk through the media. In particular we thank Environmental Health Officers from the 139 Local Governments across WA, especially those within Contiguous Local Authority Groups (CLAGs), who respond to public complaints, undertake larval and adult mosquito surveys, and undertake mosquito control activities as part of their complex, integrated programs to manage the risks to public health and amenity within their regions. -

R.E. BUSH, GASCOYNE EXPLORER AND PASTORALIST by C.W.M. Cameron , Robert Edwin (most frequently referred to as R.E.) Bush, first interested me whenI wasresearching Frank Wittenoom. They wereofthesame age, andfriends from the time Bush came to Western Australia untiltheyboth diedwithina few months of each other, in 1939. A section in the Wittenoom book represented mostof what I knewof him until by courtesy of hisgranddaughter, Miss Tessa Bush, I received a copyofsome early journals, written to his family. Thejourneys described were at the start of his Western Australian life, a start fromwhichhe became a prosperous pastoralist and a public citizen and thenretired to England to bea countrygentleman, keeping up the tradition hisancestors hadmaintained in Gloucestershire for 400 years. Robert Bush wasbornin 1855 anddiedin 1939, having made his last of thirteen trips to W.A. in 1938. There are therefore a few who wouldremember hislater visits to W.A., but nonehis arrival in 1877. What no doubt attracted the young man of twenty-two to try his luck in W.A. was that his father, Lt. Col. Robert Bush. was in charge ofthe96thInfantry guarding theyoung Swan River settlement in the 1840s, returning to Bristol in 1851. At the age of ten young Robert Edwin went as a day boy to the new public school, Clifton College, at Bristol. There his chiefclaim to remembrance seems to havebeen that he was Captain of the school cricket and later played for Gloucestershire from 1874-7 in the time of the famous Grace brothers. This had its own results for W.A. Bush had a boarder friend at Clifton, Thomas Souther Lodge. -

Upon introduction to areas outside of its natural range, these characteristics often give O. mossambicus a competitive advantage over indigenous fishes. Accordingly, O. mossambicus may have deleterious impacts on aquatic communities. Since nonindigenous O. mossambicus populations were first observed in Western Australia in the Gascoyne/Lyons River system (ca 25°S) in 1981, the species has spread north to the Lyndon and Minilya Rivers (ca 23°S), and south to the Chapman River (ca 28°S). There is a high probability of further range expansions of this cichlid in Western Australia due to natural dispersal and human-mediated translocation. Adult and juvenile O. mossambicus consumed primarily detritus and vegetal matter, though juveniles collected from the Gascoyne River were carnivorous. There was no demonstrable dietary overlap between O. mossambicus and the carnivorous and omnivorous sympatric species in the Chapman and Gascoyne Rivers. -

44 THE EFFECTS OF GROUNDWATER ABSTRACTION ON THE GNANGARA AND JANDAKOT MOUNDS, PERTH REGION WESTERN AUSTRALIA (Pengaruh Abstraksi Air Tanah Pada Dataran Tinggi Gnangara dan Jandakot, Wilayah Perth, Western Australia) Baina Afkril (Laboratorium Fisika, Fakultas MIPA, UNIPA.) ABSTRACT Tulisan ini merupakan hasil penelitian tentang pengaruh abstraksi permukaan air bawah tanah pada dataran tinggi Gnangara dan Jandakot di wilayah Perth, Australia Barat. Dataran tinggi Gnangara berlokasi di bagian utara wilayah Perth sedangkan Jandakot di bagian selatan. Kedua dataran tinggi tersebut adalah sumber utama air bawah tanah untuk mensuplai semua kebutuhan air di wilayah Perth, yang membentang sepanjang pantai Swan dan terdiri dari lapisan pasir, silt stone dengan bentangan silt yang tidak teratur serta lapisan lempung dengan ketebalan antara 10 -100 m. Abstraksi air tanah dilakukan perusahaan air minum dan beberapa pihak lain dan berbagai industri dan perusahaan komersial lainnya. Sementara air tanah diperlukan untuk pertanian, industri dan kebutuhan komersial lainnya. Abstraksi yang berkepanjangan telah menimbulkan beberapa masalah terhadap kondisi air tanah di sekitar dataran tinggi Gnangara dan Jandakot. Masalah pertama adalah penutupan permukaan air tanah (water table). Selama periode 20 tahun (1974-1994) Abstraksi pada dataran tinggi Gnangara telah terjadi penurunan permukaan berkisar dari 3,0 m sampai 0,2 m. Sementara pada dataran tinggi Jandakot mengalami penurunan berkisar dari 1,5 m sampai 0,5. Karena penggunaan pompa dan tempat lainnya seperti ektensifikasi penggunaan lahan dan perubahan iklim C (cuaca) kondisi beberapa lahan basah sekitar wilayah Perth turun secara drastis. Selama periode 1976-1985 permukaan air pada danau Western di dataran tinggi Gnangara turun sekitar 1,0 m sedangkan permukaan Danau Estern berkurang sampai 3,0 m. -

ABORIGINAL HISTORY 1979 3:2 Bruce Shaw and Jack Sullivan, Turkey Creek, October 1977 Photograph courtesy o f Bruce Shaw 9(1 ‘THEY SAME AS YOU AND ME’: ENCOUNTERS WITH THE GAD I A IN THE EAST KIMBERLEY Bruce Shaw and Jack Sullivan* Jack Sullivan was born on Argyle station in 1901 to a European father of the same name and a ‘fullblood’ Aboriginal woman of Djamindjung background. He grew up on the station and in his twenties ‘came over to the white side’, a choice which was explicitly presented by European station managers to many ‘half caste’ Aborigines when they came of age to enter fully into the stock work economy. The choice made was irreversible. Thereafter Jack never fully participated in the traditional ‘Law’ of the Aboriginal community to which he was related. A few years after the death of Patsy Durack in 1933, Jack ‘pulled out’ of Argyle station and followed the life style of the ‘bag man’, working on the Dunham River, Mabel Downs and Lissadell stations. In 1971, he retired from station life because of ill-health and set up camp with his fullblood half-brother Bulla Bilingiin on the Kununurra Aboriginal camping reserve (Mirima Village). I met him two years later and together we began recording his life history. Jack is one of the few remaining ‘old identities’ of the East Kimberley. Some anecdotes from his younger days are recorded by Mary Durack.1 The remini scences given here refer to the period between 1880 and his early childhood. Jack now lives in comfortable retirement at Turkey Creek. -

MacPherson was born in Scotland and arrived in Western Australia as a boy. His father worked near Baandee. Since his early 20s he travelled much of Australia and South-East Asia gaining work as a fitter & turner, diesel driver, and engineer. He subsequently wrote about 80 articles for magazines such as “Walkabout”, “Australasian Post” and “Countryman” which he illustrated with photographs taken during his travels. He died, aged 60, of lung cancer on 8 September 1966 as a result of living in Wittenoom for six months. The Papers The papers were donated by Maidie Smith in March 1996 (Acc. 6811A).
