TITLE: Oral cancer symposium SPEAKER: Professor Mike Lewis, Professor of Oral Medicine at the School of Dentistry, Cardiff University, Professor Marco Carozzo, Professor of Oral Medicine and Mr Neil Heath, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Radiologist CPD HOURS: 6

Curriculum objectives covered: Clinical: 1.2, 1.5, 1.7, 1.16, 1.19, 2.2, 2.9 and 8.2 Communication: 14.3

Aims: To highlight the important role of primary care dental teams in the assessment and timely diagnosis of patients with oral cancer. The symposium will discuss the risk factors and clinical presentation of oral cancer and review the patient pathway from initial presentation to referral and diagnosis; delegates will also have the opportunity to hear about the patient pathway from a patient's perspective.

Teaching/learning methods: • Lecture

Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the session all participants should be able to: • give an account of the spectrum of clinical ways that mouth cancer may present; • discuss the range and role of special investigations that may be used to assist detection and diagnosis of mouth cancer; • describe how to refer a patient with suspected mouth cancer for specialist assessment; • discuss the risk factors for oral cancer and how prevention can be reinforced in clinical practice; • identify those conditions which should be regarded as potentially malignant; • explain the implications of a delay in the diagnosis of oral cancer; • describe the dental and maxillofacial imaging utilised in the oral cancer patient pathway; • identify the key signs of cancer on radiographs; and • explain how to send imaging data safely and securely to secondary care.

Essential content: • Being paid as an Associate, record keeping, Associate accounts, Inland Revenue and paying tax, financial planning for the transition from FD to GDP.

Teaching/learning methods: • Short lectures/group work.

Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the session all participants should be able to: • Outline the main clauses within an Associate agreement. • Demonstrate how they would calculate their own pay as an Associate. • Demonstrate how to calculate likely amount of tax due, when payable and methods of saving to pay tax. • Describe basic accounting records as an Associate.
