Ana Cara, Professor of Hispanic Studies Ana C. Cara holds a PhD in folklore and folklife from the University of Pennsylvania. Her scholarship spans a range of felds, including folklore, creolization theory, Latin American and Caribbean literatures and cultures, tango music and dance, and Jorge Luis Borges. She has conducted feldwork in Argentina, the Caribbean, and among Latinos in the U.S. Her coedited volume Creolization as Cultural Creativity received international acclaim, and her articles and chapters have appeared in various books and journals, including the Journal of American Folklore and the Latin American Research Review. Cara has conducted numerous interviews with major writers and musicians, including Jorge Luis Borges, whom she hosted at Oberlin College. She is currently completing a book on his milonga poems. She joined the Oberlin College faculty in 1980 and directed and taught in several programs abroad, including Crdoba, Spain; London, England; Guadalajara, Mexico; Havana, Cuba; and Crdoba, Argentina. Most recently, she appeared in and helped produce the documentary In the Moment: Poetry Duels and Improvisations, directed by Steve Zeitlin and Amanda Dargan.

Clayton Koppes, Professor of History In his teaching and scholarship, Clayton R. Koppes examines cultural and social issues as they are refracted through national politics and foreign policy. He is writing a history of HIV/AIDS in the United States (with his husband, David L. Kelly). He taught courses on U.S. political and cultural history since 1877, with seminars on such subjects as the history of HIV, censorship, and the Cold War. His work on movie censorship and propaganda includes Hollywood Goes to War and a book in progress on movie censorship from the 1890s to 1968. Koppes served for nine years in Oberlin’s administration as academic dean, provost, and (twice) acting president. A member of the Heisman Club board, he and Kelly sponsored the spin room in the new ftness center. Koppes donated the home he owned with his late partner, sociology professor William P. Norris, to the college.

Sonia Kruks, Robert S. Danforth Professor of Politics Sonia Kruks received a BA from the University of Leeds, U.K. and a PhD in government from the London School of Economics. She taught courses in political theory at Oberlin for 30 years. Her classes have included historical surveys of political thinking from the ancient Greeks to the present, topical courses on questions such as the nature or power and the meaning of democracy, and specialized classes on recent continental theory. She also taught courses on feminist theory and directed the Women’s Studies Program many years ago. Her scholarly work has long been focused on the political ideas of the French existentialist thinkers, and she is the author of four books and many articles on their work. Her most recent book is about feminist existential thinker Simone de Beauvoir.

24 Michael Lynn, Professor of Recorder and Baroque Flute Michael Lynn performed for the inaugural luncheon for President Barack Obama’s frst term and has given concerts throughout the United States, Canada, , and Japan with Apollo’s Fire, Mercury Baroque, ARTEK, Oberlin Baroque Ensemble, Smithsonian Chamber Players, Tafelmusik, American Baroque Ensemble, Handel & Haydn Society, the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Cleveland Opera, and many others. He teaches each summer at the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute and has taught other workshops throughout the country. Lynn previously taught at the University of Michigan, Oakland University, Case Western Reserve University, and at the Recorder Institute of Indiana University. Known for his expertise regarding historical futes, Lynn maintains the website originalfutes.com based on his fute collection and presents lectures and demonstrations about the history of the fute. He writes extensively for the major fute magazines in the U.S. and Europe. He previously served Oberlin as associate dean for facilities and technology for 15 years.

Albert Matlin, Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Albert Matlin joined the Oberlin faculty in 1984 and for most of his career taught courses in general and organic chemistry. He also taught courses on the history of science in the First-Year Seminar Program and on the Oberlin-in-London Program. In 2019, he received Oberlin’s Excellence in Teaching Award. His research interests include mechanistic and synthetic organic photochemistry, radical cyclization reactions, active site mutants of bacterial alkaline phosphatase, and the nazarov cyclization. Matlin’s work has been supported by grants from the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and Oberlin College. From 1996 to 2002, Albert served as cochair (with David Love) of the Science Building Executive Committee, which oversaw the design and construction of the Science Center.

Catharina Meints, Associate Professor of Viola da Gamba and Cello During her distinguished career as a performer, Catharina Meints has played and recorded on fve instruments, including bass and treble viols, modern and baroque cello, and pardessus de viole. Afer completing a cello performance degree at the Eastman School of Music, she became assistant principal with the Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, she met her future husband and collaborator, oboist and viol enthusiast James Caldwell. It was the beginning of a 40-year partnership during which Meints and Caldwell became leaders in a revival of the viol. In 1971, they moved to northern Ohio, and Meints joined the Cleveland Orchestra. Meints’ career on early instruments has included playing bass viol in the Oberlin Baroque Ensemble and with the Cleveland Baroque Soloists. As their collection of antique viols grew, Caldwell and Meints formed and recorded with the Oberlin Consort of Viols, in which Meints plays treble viol exclusively. Meints retired from a 35-year career with the Cleveland Orchestra in 2006. She plays frequently with Apollo’s Fire, as well as in solo and chamber music concerts.

25 Roland Pandolf, Professor of Horn Roland Pandolf joined the Oberlin Conservatory faculty in 2001. Prior to this appointment, he was principal horn of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra for 35 years. He has held teaching positions at the St. Louis Conservatory of Music, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and Northwestern University. His success as a teacher is apparent from the overwhelming success of his students, who have won positions in the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Cincinnati Symphony, the Bufalo Philharmonic, the Louisville Philharmonic, and the orchestras of Tenerife (Spain), Mexico City, Tucson, and Bogota. Pandolf has extensive experience as an orchestral, solo, and chamber musician. He was a performer and teacher at the Banf Centre in Canada for 15 years and spent two summers at the Afnis Seminar in Japan. He has performed double concertos with Barry Tuckwell, Hermann Baumann, and Froydis Re Wekre. His solo performances with the St. Louis Symphony include concertos of Mozart, Haydn, Strauss, Bernard Heiden, and the Britten Serenade for tenor, horn, and strings.

Tim Scholl, Professor of Russian and Comparative Literature Tim Scholl is a scholar of Russian and a dance historian who has authored two volumes on the history of Russian dance: From Petipa to Balanchine, Classical Revival and the Modernization of Ballet (Routledge, 1994) and Sleeping Beauty, a Legend in Progress (Yale, 2004). His writings on dance have been translated into Russian, Finnish, Swedish, German, Italian, French, British English, and Chinese. A specialist in 19th- and 20th-century ballet, Scholl holds degrees from Yale University and Vanderbilt University. His articles on dance have appeared in Playbill, Te New York Times, Moscow’s Kommersant Daily, and Stockholm’s Danstidnigen and in programs of the New York City Ballet, Milan’s La Scala Teater, London’s Royal Opera House, the Paris Opera, and the Hamburg Ballet. His Sleeping Beauty, a Legend in Progress was selected as an Outstanding Academic Title by Choice in 2005 and was nominated for the 2006 American Association for Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages book prize in literary/ cultural studies.

Milan Vitek, Professor of Violin Milan Vitek is in demand as a teacher of master classes for festivals and conservatories, including the following: Aldeburgh (England), Keshet Eilon (Israel), Yokosuka Festival (Japan) a Yuriko Kuronuma Academy (Mexico City), Weikersheim (Germany), and Savonlinna (Finland), along with Shanghai, Beijing, and Chengdu Conservatories. He has adjudicated international violin competitions in Denmark, where he was president of the Carl Nielsen International Violin Competition, and also in Germany, Japan, Estonia, and Italy. His students are winners and laureates of the following violin competitions: Carl Nielsen, J. Kocian, Heino Eller, Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, Washington International, Yehudi Menuhin International, Jean Sibelius, and the Fischof National Chamber Music Competition.

26 David Walker, Professor of English and Creative Writing David Walker’s teaching interests center on 20th-century literature, drama, and creative writing. Recent courses ofered include Crossing Borders, Modern British and Irish Fiction, Shakespeare and the Limits of Genre, American Poets Since 1960, Contemporary British and Irish Drama, and Modern Fiction and Sexual Diference. He has also ofered a class on the fction of Vladimir Nabokov, a class on James Joyce and Virginia Woolf, and the playwriting workshop in the Creative Writing Program. His publications include Te Transparent Lyric, a study of Wallace Stevens and William Carlos Williams, and many articles about modern and contemporary literature. He is coeditor of Oberlin College Press and the journal FIELD: Contemporary Poetry and Poetics. He is also the editor of American Alphabets: 25 Contemporary Poets (2006), Poets Reading: Te FIELD Symposia (1999), and A FIELD Guide to Contemporary Poetry and Poetics (revised edition, 1997). In 2011, Walker received Oberlin’s Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2012, he was featured in the Princeton Review’s Te 300 Best Professors. Walker directed the Oberlin-in-London Program seven times, most recently in 2020.
