Situated in a culturally rich Indigenous area within a 150-kilometre radius, Fanshawe is committed to playing a leadership role in providing First Nations education and services. Since 1996, the College’s Institute of Indigenous Learning has been providing culturally relevant support services for all First Nations Status, Non-Status, Métis and Inuit students enrolled at the College. “The Action Plan is an important step The Institute is a lively hub of activity providing one-on-one support for students, in our journey to continually increase opportunities to meet a visiting Elder for spiritual and cultural guidance, participate in a Indigenous student access to higher smudging ceremony or simply interact with other Indigenous students in the lounge. education, and the fulfilment of their study and career aspiration,” says Guy Over the past three years, Fanshawe has experienced record growth in Williams, Fanshawe’s special advisor of the number of Indigenous students choosing to study here. In September Indigenous Education and Development. 2019, Fanshawe is expecting to welcome over 700 first-year Indigenous “We want to be the College best at students, pushing the total to well over 1,000 across our campuses. creating access points for education.”

This year, Fanshawe launched its indigenous Action Plan focused on implementing recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The plan calls for: `` Expanded footprint on campus with the construction of a Centre for Indigenous Learning and Reconciliation, providing a venue for Indigenous community celebrations, indoor and outdoor teaching, collaborative meeting rooms, experiential learning, language labs and social entrepreneurship; `` More partnerships with Indigenous learners and communities using research and data analysis of Indigenous student outcomes at the high school level, plus better plans to recruit and retain of Indigenous students; `` Indigenous curriculum at the post-secondary level; `` Visually enhanced Indigenous presence across Fanshawe campuses through signage, artwork and displays. Innovation Village: Developing job skills of the future

Fanshawe is creating a new kind of community – where the creativity of students and the wisdom of educators and mentors converge to advance innovation. A place to disrupt the norm, push boundaries, collaborate and create. Through this $55 million project, Innovation Village will be a place where students will learn the job skills not just in their chosen field, but the soft skills of the future. Every student will have the opportunity to participate in signature learning experiences that focus on social entrepreneurship, multi-disciplinary projects, applied research and community collaboration. At the heart of the project will be the i4C Hub, a virtual and physical gateway that supports a vibrant and collaborative ecosystem where students can access supports and services that will promote exceptional learning. The i4C Hub’s unique space will include: `` A pop-up marketplace where students can showcase their creativity, new businesses and recent inventions; `` Easy access to existing supports and services around the College including the Centre for Research and Innovation, the Library research team and the Canadian Centre for Product Validation; `` An expansion of the existing entrepreneur incubator (LEAP Junction) to include short-term office spaces where new student businesses can begin to take flight; `` The Gathering Place, where Indigenous community members, students and faculty can connect and come together; `` A high-profile presentation and pitch space with a cutting-edge digital theatre. The project will transform Fanshawe’s existing library into three, cross-functional floors for interdisciplinary collaboration and connections, including flexible gathering spaces, high performance learning labs for group projects and tutoring, and high-tech ‘maker spaces’ where 3-D printers, collaborative software platforms and multi-media studios will bring ideas and inventions to life. Beyond the planned physical footprint on campus, Innovation Village will extend innovative practices throughout the College by engaging students with rich experiential learning opportunities – through a signature innovative learning experience – as an essential part of their education. When completed in 2021, Innovation Village will be an invaluable support to the College’s commitment to provide high quality, relevant education and training to prepare our students for an ever‑changing marketplace. Student Awards FANSHAWE by the numbers Thanks to the tremendous generosity of you, our donors, Fanshawe is able to offer a wide range of bursaries and scholarships to support Fanshawe students. This assistance is vital to reduce the financial burden of school and allow our students to concentrate on their studies. Without the support of over 700 bursary donors, many students would not have had the financial means to afford tuition, textbooks, accommodation and other expenses, making the dream of post-secondary education impossible.
