Should errors occur, the contents of this book will be interpreted by the President according to the official minutes of meetings of Hockey Canada. The Playing Rules of Hockey Canada are published in a separate booklet and may be obtained from the Executive Director of any Hockey Canada Member, from any office of Hockey Canada or from Hockey Canada’s web site. HockeyCanada.ca 3 HOCKEY CANADA MISSION STATEMENT Lead, Develop and Promote Positive Hockey Experiences Michael Brind’Amour Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, QC Chair of the Board Hockey Canada 2020-21 CHAIR MESSAGE Hockey Canada expresses its profound gratitude to all the front-line workers who have worked tirelessly and at their own risk to take care of Canadians through the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you. Our game and our players need us more than ever. The hockey community has been hit hard; our hockey season and all our projects were stopped in full flight, and new, urgent and unfamiliar priorities quickly replaced them. We continue to try to mitigate the damaging effects of the pandemic. As I write this message, in May 2020, Canada is preparing to ease restrictions under the guidance of our public health authorities. During these unique times, Hockey Canada and its Members are actively preparing a Return to Hockey. Task teams and workgroups are being established to address 4 HockeyCanada.ca ever-changing circumstances. Our Member Engagement department is coordinating efforts with Members to restructure the delivery of the game, from local hockey associations up to our elite leagues, from Timbits U7 players to our national teams. The Board of Directors, Executive leadership and staff of Hockey Canada, working together with all Hockey governing bodies across the country, are united to face the uncertainties and to plan for a return to the rink with the help of the countless volunteers across the country who take care of participants year-round. It is important to stay positive in the face of adversity, remain connected and rely on one another. I believe that our level of communication has never been so unified, strong and productive. Our leadership is expressing itself. We need to continue. We remain committed to focusing on the health and safety of our participants and hockey will have to be played with that priority being of the utmost importance. Even in these adverse circumstances we are living through, we can still Lead, Develop and Promote Positive Hockey Experiences, our mission statement. We have the potential and will to adapt and serve our players who want Hockey. We can be creative, inspired and dedicated with our return to hockey. Taking care of our players is taking care of our sport. It lies with us to meet the challenges. Before COVID-19 hit in early March 2020, we were engaged with many projects. Hockey Canada will continue to pursue the work already started. Answering the concerns and addressing the situations, creating, reviewing and solidifying our policies, evaluating our programs and improving them, ensuring our Members needs are taken care of. It is important to acknowledge the Hockey Canada Board of Directors. It made timely, necessary and difficult decisions to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on our hockey community. The Directors acted with diligence in taking care of the people and of Hockey Canada, and they remain committed and humble. I commend them for their sustained efforts and hard work. All the staff of Hockey Canada have demonstrated care, support, guidance and dedication. Thank you for your professionalism. Hockey Canada is fortunate to be able to count on you. As you see, Hockey Canada is not waiting. Hockey Canada is working to get back to what we do best: hockey for our participants and hockey for Canada. Stay safe, stay strong and stay committed, Michael Brind’Amour Chair, Board of Directors Hockey Canada HockeyCanada.ca 5 TABLE OF CONTENTS I. OVERVIEW VII. BOARD OF DIRECTORS 1. The easiest thing would be to thank all the many people that have been contacted during the researching of this history. There has been nothing but cooperation from everyone, for which I am really thankful. However there are a few people who must be given special thanks for their help, patience and forbearance. The first of these must be my wife Katheleen who racked her brains remembering all she could about her family, while digging out all her old photographs and letters. She also listened patiently to my endless theories, hopes, successes and failures, besides searching records in Alberta, Ontario and Ireland Archives and tramping through numerous cemetaries in these same areas. Without her the task would have been considerably harder. The same can be said, in varying degrees, to her family from whom I continually requested information and pictures. Mabel M "Wright" Duncan who wrote "The Duncans of Bethel" must be commended for the work she put into the book, while her niece Margaret Elizabeth Duncan, of Edmonton is thanked for introducing me to it. While on the subject of books Patricia Harts "Pioneering in North York", is a must to anyone who is researching that area.

Operational and Policy Governance are clearly understood. The Board of Directors and Members have adapted well. Again, I stress how pleased I am to work with a team striving to improve our organization and game. The Board recognizes that hockey is a passion with high expectations from our country. The mandatory Initiation Program is experiencing some concern in a few areas; however, I have been impressed with the progress and attitude of the Members actively involved in promoting the value of this program. It is pleasant to receive compliments supporting the Board for this initiative. It is difficult to be critical of a program that works on improvement and develops skills as well as incorporating fun in the game.
