COMPOSER’S NOTE: In current liturgical practice, the Introductory Psalm of Vespers “In Praise to the Sovereign Lord for His Creation and Providence” is usually reduced to stringing together several of the refrains of the Psalm (some of which are not even in the text of the Psalm itself) into a choral composition. At the 1980 Summer Institute at St. Vladimir’s Seminary I attempted to demonstrate liturgically how this great “poem of Creation” is meant to give voice to the New Creation in Christ, assembled as the People of God, all joining together in a symphony of resounding praise with all creatures great and small, heavenly and earthly, visible and invisible. The original score (1980) presented here was not meant to be a “choral” composition; rather, it demonstrates what may likely have been the tradition of the Great Church (Hagia Sophia in Constantinople), calling for chanters, youthful trios singing in the middle of the church, the choirs, both right and left, and finally, the “symphonia”—the entire congregation gathered to lift up their voices in the refrains of psalm (“diapsalm”).

EDITOR’S NOTE: It should be noted that the score presented here corresponds exactly to the composer’s original intentions, in terms of the voicing, the performing forces, and the number and extent of the psalm verses to be used. In this regard it differs in a number of details from the version published in Orthodox Church Music, volume 1 (New York: Department of Liturgical Music, Orthodox Church in America, 1983), pp. 31-36.
