The Duchess Guide
DISCOVER ITALIA! The Duchess Guide In his quest for the ultimate Sicily itinerary, James Miller decided to consult one of the island’s noble ambassadors, Nicoletta Polo, the Duchess of Palma isiting somewhere as special as Sicily can present a dilemma as there are so many guide books and television programmes covering the Mediterranean’s most majestic island. You can either find yourself spoilt for choice or totally bewildered when Vconsidering what to see and do. And no trip to Sicily should be squandered by not having prepared an amazing itinerary of activities to enjoy. An enviable problem I’ll confess, but one I intended to solve nevertheless, so I met with one of the island’s most prominent and cultured ambassadors; a lady who can offer the ‘discerning’ visitor an insight into the true Sicily and its captivating appeal, the Duchess of Palma, Nicoletta Polo. Nicoletta and I are old friends from my previous adventures in 1. Ortigia First on the list was Ortigia. Nicoletta Polo Lanza Tomasi, Duchess Sicily and whenever I return to see her I’m welcomed with such “I adore Ortigia,” Nicoletta of Palma di Montechiaro warmth it’s like visiting a kind and benevolent aunt, although warmly expressed her I don’t boast such lofty connections with my own family as sentiments about this small Nicoletta is an Italian noblewoman. Her husband is the heir of and charming island that is Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, the author of one of the most the beating heart of ancient important works in Italian literary culture, Il Gattopardo (The Syracuse. -

Italy, the Deep South and Sicily
Italy, the Deep South and Sicily Tour Information Italy, the Deep South and Sicily TOUR INFORMATION You are travelling to Europe – a wonderful assembly of diverse countries that have, over hundreds of years, evolved and formulated their individual and often unique customs, styles and quirkiness. We want to (and sometimes have to) fit into the region’s natural patterns and irregularities. Much will appear so very different from ‘home’ – and surely it is exactly those very differences that inspired you to go there in the first place! To help you, the following pages contains additional information specific to your tour including brief introductory information regarding the major sites and regions you will be visiting. We would like to wish you a wonderful trip through Europe and a safe return home. Best wishes from the Albatross Team Italy, the Deep South and Sicily Italian traffic rules and regulations You will see in our promotional brochure that the Albatross style of touring emphasises a more leisurely pace with a number of 2, 3, 4 and even 5 night stops. This is always our objective and on virtually all of our programme tours throughout Europe it is relatively easily achievable. In Italy, however, despite having longer stays in each place than any other tour we still have to have a number of earlier starts. This is beyond our control. You see, throughout Italy local councils, cities and regions impose some quite significant restrictions on coach usage, stopping, parking and pick up points. These local by-laws change from year to year and can even change during the summer tourist season. -

YOUR O.A.T. ADVENTURE TRAVEL PLANNING GUIDE® New! Tunisia: From the Mediterranean to the Sahara 2022 Small Groups: 8-16 travelers—guaranteed! (average of 13) Overseas Adventure Travel ® The Leader in Personalized Small Group Adventures on the Road Less Traveled 1 Dear Traveler, At last, the world is opening up again for curious travel lovers like you and me. And the O.A.T. New! Tunisia: From the Mediterranean to the Sahara itinerary you’ve expressed interest in will be a wonderful way to resume the discoveries that bring us so much joy. You might soon be enjoying standout moments like these: Venture out to the Tataouine villages of Chenini and Ksar Hedada. In Chenini, your small group will interact with locals and explore the series of rock and mud-brick houses that are seemingly etched into the honey-hued hills. After sitting down for lunch in a local restaurant, you’ll experience Ksar Hedada, where you’ll continue your people-to-people discoveries as you visit a local market and meet local residents. You’ll also meet with a local activist at a coffee shop in Tunis’ main medina to discuss social issues facing their community. You’ll get a personal perspective on these issues that only a local can offer. The way we see it, you’ve come a long way to experience the true culture—not some fairytale version of it. So we keep our groups small, with only 8-16 travelers (average 13) to ensure that your encounters with local people are as intimate and authentic as possible.
