https://doi.org/10.24113/ijellh.v7i11.10110 Reworking Mollywood Ann Mary Post Graguat Student India [email protected] Gender studies, a form of scholarship with strong connections to women’s studies and LGBTQI studies primarily challenges what Gayle Rubin refers to as the “sex/gender system”, which positions heterosexuality as the only normal form of sexual relations and thus bifurcates humans into “males” and “females”. To better ensure the distinction of these two sexes, the sex/gender system demands that the males always behave in ways conventionally understood as “masculine” while females must behave in a traditionally “feminine” manner. By linking these sexes to these specific genders, Rubin argues, the sex/gender system works as a powerful regulator of individual behavior and social relations, particularly with regard to the subjugation of women. With the exception of cultural feminists who understand women’s femininity to be inherent, feminist and LGBTQI activists and scholars have long opposed the sex/gender system because, in addition to suggesting that masculinity and femininity are stable and universal categories, it relies on the faulty logic that “biology is destiny” and thus severely limits the unique qualities which different humans possess. Hence, as the discussion on the SMART MOVES JOURNAL IJELLH ISSN: 2582-3574 Vol. 7, Issue 11, November 2019 182 https://doi.org/10.24113/ijellh.v7i11.10110 development of gender studies demonstrates, the various ways feminist and LGBTQI scholars have theorized “sex” and “gender” are the best methods to subvert the oppressive norms associated with them. This paper is such an attempt to examine the subversion of gender stereotypes through the medium of cinema.

[email protected] Abstract: Victim-assailant or the prey-predator relationship persists throughout the history of man and is in turn reflected in various forms of literature and arts. There is an array of films that discusses this perennial theme overtly or covertly. Malayalam film industry has set its benchmark of new wave movements and themes. Analyzing the journey of „victim‟ from Padmarajan (Namukku Paarkkan Munthirithoppual), the pioneer of first new-wave, till Aashiq Abu (22 Female Kottayam) and Amal Neerad (Varathan) who hold the baton of second new-wave it is understood that it is also a journey of a feeble woman who falls short to protest to the one who backlashes at the assailant and overpower the male counterpart. This paper is set in the light of the theory of Laura Mulvey‟s “male gaze” and how it is represented with ascending intensity over time. Not only the female characters but also a gender relation, that is the representation of man-woman relationships, also changed a lot.

Christina Romeo Guest Faculty, Department of English St. Stephens College Uzhavoor, Kerala, India [email protected] Bindu Cherian HOD, Department of English St. Stephens College Uzhavoor, Kerala, India Varathan: An Outsider among Toxic Masculinities Abstract The loud posturing of macho heroes from 1970s-80s cinema survived the much-touted return of romance in the 1990s. Today, Indian cinema offers heroes who unabashedly shed tears before their girlfriends and wives, who are not the benevolent bosses of the women in their lives, who are open about their vulnerability or at least do not compensate for displays of such emotion by letting their fists fly or by bullying women into falling for them. With Varathan, Mollywood witnesses the deconstruction of the masculine patriarch and its toxic traits. The paper is an attempt to register the change in notions of masculinity. The aim is not to argue that one notion or one kind of gender is better than the other rather that both masculinity and femininity is always in a state of transformation. IJELLH (International Journal of English Language, Literature in Humanities) Vol. 7, Issue 9, September 2019 2 Keywords: Varathan, Toxic Masculinities, Gender Crisis, New-Man. Introduction A film heavily influences and cyclically impacts society’s culture. When distinct patterns are constantly being presented, the audience’s perspective towards the world is altered. Films have always offered a window through which audiences could observe human nature at a distance. A theatre is where many a boy learned how to make things right, the way the actors did in countless iconic films, with either their fists or a gun.

  • Reconstituting the Cultural Stereotypes in Malayalam Cinema
© 2021 JETIR May 2021, Volume 8, Issue 5 www.jetir.org (ISSN-2349-5162) Beyond ‘Othering’: Reconstituting the Cultural Stereotypes in Malayalam Cinema 1Greenu Ans Thomas1, 2Greethu Elizabeth Thomas 1, 2 Department of English 1St. Thomas College, Palai, Kerala, 2Sacred Heart College, Thevara, Kerala [email protected], [email protected] Abstract This study examines Malayalam Cinema as perpetuators of cultural and intersectional othering through the portrayal of people living in the high ranges of Kerala, comprising of Idukki and Malabar regions, as unrefined and uncivilized. In the light of characterizations in the movies Varathan(2018) directed by Amal Neerad, Jallikattu(2019) directed by Lijo Jose Pellisserry, Kettiyolaanu Ente Malakha(2019) by Nissam Basheer and Loudspeaker(2009) by Jayaraj the paper seeks the politics inherent in the repeated portrayal of the high ranges as uncouth and inferior. It also argues that the concept of othering is well suited for understanding the power-relations as well as the binary positions created by movies intentionally or unintentionally. Homogenization of masses is what that happens in such a situation where particular is generalized. The study also delves into the hidden layers of cultural stereotyping and addresses the need to reconstitute the idea of the high range as the ‘other’. Keywords: othering, ontology, stereotype, polyphony, subaltern Visual representations create a real imagined space apart from the ontological essence intrinsic in it. The represented images create a prism which might even blur the boundary between the real and the represented space. Mapping regions in visual culture has its own politics and poetics. Spaces associated with subaltern are often misrepresented.

  • Exploring the Unfemininity in New Wave Malayalam Movies
© 2020 IJRAR February 2020, Volume 7, Issue 1 www.ijrar.org (E-ISSN 2348-1269, P- ISSN 2349-5138) EXPLORING THE UNFEMININITY IN NEW WAVE MALAYALAM MOVIES LAVANYA R.MOHAN,RESEARCH SCHOLAR,DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH,MAR THOMA COLLEGE, M.G.UNIVERSITY, KOTTAYAM, KERALA,INDIA Abstract : Films play an important role in influencing the lives of ordinary man in the present scenario. The audience interpret movies from their own perspectives. There are realistic and fictional narratives. Malayalam movies make intense portrayal of themes and characters from time immemorial. We have male centric movies, which portray the charisma of male protagonists, who entertain the audience with their dialogues and masculine body. Female actors play passive roles in these kinds of movies. They are expected to perform duties assigned to them by the patriarchal society. The coming of age movies or ‘the New Generation Malayalam Movies’ try to move away from the conventional themes and deal with complex real life incidents and human behaviour. Even the iconic actors who have portrayed the superhuman characters shift to play the roles of ordinary men. But the question is whether these changes in Malayalam movies matter in the portrayal of women characters. There are many female oriented movies which present the patriarchal domination in disguise. We have strong female characters who have to succumb to the misogyny at the end. The stereotypical women characters still exist.
