East-West Population Institute, East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii. "DESCRIPTION OF THE DATA FILE, .02 SAMPLE OF 1970 OPULATION OF THAILAND

"Introduction" This document describes the .02 sample of the 1970 population of Thailand. The unit of enumeration for the 1970 census was the household. The population was enumerated on the "de jure ban's (except for students who were counted on a "de facto ban's). Information on household and population characteristics were collected using Enumeration Form 2 (see Appendix A). Population characteristics were obtained for persons in every household while household characteristics were collected for every household in municipal areas but only for 25 percent of households in villages (see Appendix C for details on the sampling and enumeration procedures used). "File Structure and Contents The contents of the data file are based on information collected using Enumeration Form 2. The data file consists of 772,251 unweighted records of individuals. Each record is 126 characters-long. The first nine variables provide data on the household and are repeated for every person enumerated in the household. Variables 10 to 54 describe characteristics of individuals. Variables 55 to 82 contain data on the housing unit, for example, type of living quarters and tenure of unit. The last variable on the record is the weight variable (V84 -- see below for a description of the weight variable).

"Weight Variable

The total enumerated population of Thailand in 1970 was about 34.2 million. As described above, the data file contains 772,251 unweighted records. The weight variable is used to inflate the sample to represent the total population. Applying the weight factor to the sample yields a total of 34,396,057 weighted records.

To use the weight factor in this data file, V84, the last variable in a record, should be divided by 100,000,000. The mean weight has a value of 44.54.
