The Institute for Government, Prospect magazine’s Think Tank of the Year 2010, and the Political Studies Association have been working together since the early summer to gain a closer understanding of policy-making in the UK and factors that contribute to success of major policy interventions. Inspired by Government’s Greatest Achievements, a report based on a Brookings Institution survey in 2000 of 450 history and political science professors who were asked their views on the most successful government policies in the US, the IFG and Political Studies Association designed a survey of the best policies of the past 30 years in Britain that was e-mailed in June to all Association members holding academic positions in the UK. The response rate was almost 20% with some 150 completed questionnaires being received from members based across 69 institutions. This was triggered in 2008 by the appointment of Simon Green as Professor of Politics and Head of PIR, who set about formulating a strategy which focused the subject group’s existing strengths explicitly around the theme of ‘Europe’. On this basis, the University in early 2009 awarded the subject group just under £500,000 of strategic funding to take forward this vision; the result is the new Aston Centre for Europe (ACE).
