From the days of vaudeville and the great performing arts palaces of the early 20th century, to the creation of Canada’s first major regional theatre company, to today, the people of this city and province have been moved, inspired and entertained by generations of theatre artists. The establishment of the Winnipeg Theatre Awards – the Evies – four years ago brought long-overdue recognition to the people who make this magic: actors and actresses, directors and choreographers, writers and designers. Months of binge-watching television this year have reminded us all that live in-person performance creates a uniquely powerful, spontaneous, honest, empathic bond between performer and audience. All of those who create that bond through their work – or support it through their patronage of the theatre – make this a better city and province for everybody. The Honourable Janice C. Image features Audrey Dwyer from a photo by Avital Zemer. 1 A Message from the Artistic and Executive Directors Welcome to Seussical – one of our favourite musicals at YPT. Apart from being great fun and featuring terrific performances, this is a profound story. At its centre is Horton the Elephant’s assertion that "a person’s a person no matter how small". Obviously, these are words to live by. They are also a call to action for young people – to think and care about those who are sometimes forgotten or unseen. We hope Seussical inspires all audience members, young and not so young, to be conscious of the impact of their actions. Think how much better the world would be. To quote another song from the show "Oh the thinks you can think – if you’re willing to try..." Our show runs through the Holidays with public performances every day between December 27th and 31st. Perhaps you know someone for whom Seussical tickets would make a great gift! We wish you the very best for the Holidays and the New Year to come. ALLEN MACINNIS NANCY J. • Literature: Mennonite Studies Engages the Mennonite Literary Voice
Critical Thought and Mennonite Literature: Mennonite Studies Engages the Mennonite Literary Voice Nildi Froese Tiessen, Conrad Grebel University College This paper was given its initial generic title - "Critical Thought and Mennonite Literature9'- when Royden Loewen invited me to participate in this symposium, "Mennonites and the Challenge of Multiculturalism: A 25 Year Retrospective," months ago.U1I rather like the implied conflation of critical thinking and literature that such a title suggests, especially when we consider "literature" as we find it among Mennonites, where the "critical thinking" of creative writers has not always been welcome. I recall, in this context, the fact that when my colleague Jim Reimer, a few years ago, developed a new course on twentieth century Mennonite theology at Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo, Ontario, he unselfconsciously named the course "Contemporary Mennonite Thought," as if to claim all serious Mennonite thinking for theology alone. Indeed, there was a time when any Mennonite critical thinking that attracted serious attention, within the community or without, did originate in conventionally masculinist disciplines like theology, for example, or 238 Jo~trnalof Mennonite Studies history. Well, thanks to such forces as the literature courses offered by the Chair of Mennonite Studies and publications focussing on Mennonite literature published in the Jounzal of Mennonite Studies, Canadian Mennonites, over the past twenty years or so, have devoted a great deal of attention to the critical - and imaginative - thinking of Mennonite creative writers, whose voices are now possibly more widely listened to than those of any other thinkers to whom the Mennonite community might lay claim.

MARCH - APRIL 2018 I ISSUE 5 BRUCKNER & BACH Lara Ciekiewicz A CHORUS LINE LUCA BURATTO PLAYS PROKOFIEV AL SIMMONS SYMPHONIC SHENANIGANS wso.ca I 204-949-3999 MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR In Winnipeg we greet the lengthening days and warmer weather with great enthusiasm and a feeling of pride for making it through another winter. Most of us say “that wasn’t too bad, at least it is a dry cold.” For the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the start of spring brings us much enthusiasm about the season offerings for the coming year, but it also gives us extra appreciation for the concerts we are able to attend in the spring. I am looking forward to hearing Gwen Hoebig and Karl Stobbe perform Bach’s Double Concerto followed by the monumental Bruckner’s 9th Symphony. The partnership with Rainbow Stage continues with a wonderful performance of A Chorus Line, we perform great choral masterpieces at St. Boniface Cathedral in recognition of the anniversary of the diocese, and we welcome exciting young pianist Luca Buratto to the WSO. And, of course, we look forward to a performance with the irrepressible Al Simmons, our local genius. What else can we anticipate in the months to come? Well, the annual Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra Spring Gala on April 26 will move to the Centennial Concert Hall and Alloway Hall this year. The event will be connected to an exclusive performance of the orchestra and cast members from Cirque de la symphonie. Gala events are wonderful ways to celebrate as a community of WSO supporters, but attending the gala is not the only way to support the legacy of symphonic music in Winnipeg. You can enter the Symphony Sweepstakes, make a donation to the WSO Friends or Maestro’s Circle Programs, or remember the WSO in your estate planning.
