1. Matters arising from the last minutes The minutes from the 2016 Annual General Meeting were tabled and accepted as being correct. (Moved – A. Downies, Seconded B. McFarlane – passed)

2. President’s report From a club perspective having 6 of the 8 senior teams in the finals was a great result. The Father-Son side was a fantastic success. In the juniors the Under 13s, U15s and U17s all had sides in the finals and a strong number of sides.

Leigh did a fantastic job as coach, engaging players and coaching them. Sam McTaggart will be a great new coach going forward. Trent Walerys will be an excellent captain.

Ther establishment of junior co-ordinators at each age level was fantastic also.

The implementation of the T-20 Smash and Pocket Rockets was another step forward for the club.

Thanks to the sponsors for supporting the club, and the committee also.

Congratulations David Buckley for a well-deserved Best Clubman award.

3. Financial Report The club had a closing bank balance of $41,301.73. This includes a New Zealand trip fund of $15,194.93, leaving a balance of $26,107. There was a cash deficit for the season of approximately $3,000.

This was a strong performance, especially considering the club’s investment in facilities and equipment. There was discussion regarding the additional cost of umpires, having 6 sides playing finals.

Acceptance of the Treasurer’s report was moved by J. McKinnon, seconded by D. DeGrandi, and carried.

4. Coaches’ report

A good year overall, including the level of junior development and success of all sides.

Leigh thanked the captains and match selectors.

Acceptance of the coaches’ report was moved by M. Johnstone, seconded by D. Fanning and passed.

5. Annual report The annual report was accepted (moved Tim Bye, Seconded P. Cramp – passed).

6. Election of office bearers I Courtney thanked the committee for their efforts over the past year.

Ian Courtney stepped down as president of the club and A. Downie was the sole nomination for the president and was therefore elected.

Thanks were expressed to M. Appleford and D. Bowles, who stepped down from the committee.

A. Downie said he was looking to implement a portfolio arrangement within the committee going forward.

A. Carmody was nominated as the new secretary by I. Courtney, seconded by D. Davie and elected.

C. McFarlane stayed on as treasurer unopposed.

O. Buckley was nominated by I. Courtney as Vice president. This was seconded by B. McFarlane and carried.

N. Huby and M. Johnstone were nominated to join the committee. Other committee members staying on were R. Humphrey, I. Courtney, M. Harriot, D. Fanning, T. Bye and D. Buckley. This was moved by B. McFarlane and seconded by K. Gannon and carried.

7. General Business President of the GCA Barry McFarlane mentioned that the new role of operations manager for the association was being filled, with three good candidates who had been interviewed. This will be the person the clubs will liaise with on a day-to-day basis.

Consideration will be given to restructuring the divisions going forward. Because it is already approaching June it is likely to be too late to make changes for the coming season. It’s likely the changes will be drawn up and implemented the following season.

Women’s cricket is still on the agenda, but is not moving quickly.

West Geelong will be demoted to Division 2. It is uncertain of there will be 10 or 12 teams in division 1 once any restructuring has taken place.

I. Courtney was nominated for life membership by K. Gannon, seconded by D. Davie. This motion was carried.

The meeting closed at 8.14pm.

2016 / 17 St Joseph’s Cricket Club Reports

Presidents Annual Report 2016/17

Welcome and thank you for your attendance at the 2017 AGM.

As I reflect writing this, it has been a truly impressive year. And albeit for 3 runs would have been one for the ages.

We took the all-club photo on the eve of the grand finals, which was a bit of symbology on the strength of the club in having all 7 senior sides play finals, and 6 play in a grand final. Whilst official GCA records are not kept in this space, the general opinion is it was unprecedented. To then bring home a 50% return was equally a great result for the club, then adding the back to back Under 17 flag and our general off field performance see’s St Joseph Cricket Club ranked number 1 in the GCA rankings.

To the premiers go the spoils, Jono Casey & Andrew Tozer and all the seconds players, well done on winning a very see saw game of cricket, that was in the balance for most of the 2 days. To Rick Humphrey and the 3rds on finally getting rid of the hoodoo and lifting up the cup in a ripping performance. And Sean No.9 McGrath and the 4ths on a back to back result also for the club.

Trent Walerys returned to the 1st XI captain duties and led the side magnificently, and for all but 3 runs. But as I said on grand final night whilst the 3 run loss hurt more than anything, the way the 1st XI represented the SJCC is a moment I was as proud as anytime over the year.

To Michael Johnson and collective that is the 5ths, it was great to see such a turnaround from what was a number of difficult years to playoff in the big dance. To Luke Shannon also who pulled together the 6ths team throughout the year with some outstanding cricket, that didn’t quite come together grand final day, but all the same it has been a continued high standard through your efforts over the last 4 or so years. Barry Knight took over what we called the development squad of a few old blokes and Under 17 and 15 cricketers. To then take that group to a finals series was spectacular and a great experience for these young cricketers.

Finally from a senior on-field perspective, to Sam McTaggart as club coach and also for dragging Graham along, a sincere thank you for bringing a real passion to the role. We understand and support the reasons to move on, but rest assured you drive will be missed and the door is wide open.

Lastly to Tim Bye as Chairman of Selectors who probably should submit a phone bill to the committee for the amount of calls made throughout the year to ensure all sides took the park. Great work Tunza.

I briefly mentioned the Under 17 flag before and again this was Tunza bringing a back to back result home. He was ably supported by Bryan Thomas who has run the 17’s training for us an imparted so much knowledge into these young cricketers over the last 8 years.

To Doug Combridge who’s under 15 boys also played off for the flag, but were beaten on the day by a side that was almost an old Leigh Districts rep team. But again what a cricket experience for those boys.

To all the coaches of the junior teams, which I am sure Danny will acknowledge in his report, a very sincere thank you from the committee for your selfless volunteering.

Equally to the off-field junior team of Danny Keane, Adam Buttigieg, Anita Ryan and Jackie Caracella, you made my role as president easier with your efforts to make sure the junior ranks ran so well.

In his swansong year for the T20 Smash and Pocket Rockets thanks Rick Humphrey for your dedication.

For the second time we sent a team of under 15’s off to New Zealand along with a very willing team of parents led by Barry Knight. I hope the players will always remember this experience, I know the dads will as I think some new enduring bonds have been formed.

Off the field there is on the face of it a trading loss, but the facility investments in paying off the Carey Oval developments, school loans and a new pitch on Noble Street is actually and amazingly positive year. Thanks again to Chris McFarlane for keeping our financial position in check. We have been extremely fortunate to gain a grant through Telstra via the efforts of Andrew Carmody and Rob Threlfall to continue our investment into our training facilities, into the turf training deck.

Sponsorship is an important contributor to our bottom line and I would like to acknowledge our long time sponsor David Bowles & Associated Cold Tread Tyres for their continued support along with all of our sponsors. And to Sarah Johnston and John McKinnon for their work in this area.

In wrapping up I must thank my entire committee, along with Barry as groundsman, Felicity for the continued provision of amazing afternoon teas, Les, Eddie & Maggie as regular bar folk who give so much of their time to the club, and their partners for putting up with them. In the same vein to Susan and my family for letting me get away with my time up on the hill.

If I have left someone out, I apologise, but there are so many folk who do a little or a lot. I only hope for continued enjoyment and club success for the SJCC and hope to see you all around in 17/18.

Andrew Downie (Sorry who….. oh you mean Balmey) President

Coaches Annual Report 2016/17

"The season that was"

A club and league record of 6 sides in the grand final may seem to some as a lucky achievement but that couldn't be further from the truth. As I see it's just reward for hard work, dedication and amazing planning off the field which allowed us to achieve such amazing feats.

A very honest group of players put a line in the sand early in the pre season and agreed that we needed to get the hunger and fire back in the belly that had been lacking the previous year, this decision was a huge turning point for the club. A decision that demanded success.

It all began in early August with fitness session at Eastern Beach stairs, Ramps and we soon moved into once a week cross fit session which weren't for the faint hearted. It was soon very obvious that we had a great bunch of blokes who were willing to take the club to the next level.

Hard work and consistency proved to be the difference throughout the season with some amazing team and individual results, it wasn't at all surprising to see the dedicated players having incredible years with bat and ball. Long standing records were smashed with the batsmen standing tall through the grades, a huge amount of centuries and some of us were lucky enough to witness a double century. Numerous 5 plus wickets in an innings including some match winning performances in the finals series.

All in all it's an amazing but certainly not a surprising season when you understand the work the playing group put in every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Congratulations to the 4 winning premiership sides and commiseration to the 2 that didn't get there. One thing is for certain at joeys, the club is in amazing hands for the future with an unbelievable group of talented players.

It was a very proud moment to see the whole club celebrating each other's success on grand final Sunday which proves joeys has a great culture.

I personally would like to thank the playing group, committee in particular Ian Courtney for your ongoing support, Tim Bye for being the perfect right hand man, Graeme McTaggart for basically running every training session and rolling the practice wickets, Bryan Thomas for being a yes man whenever anything was needed and Barry and Felicity McFarlane for everything you do around the place, it simply wouldn't come together without this group of people. To the skippers Trent, Andrew Tozer, Jono Casey, Rick Humphrey and Sean McGrath, congratulations on the efforts you boys put in, true leaders of the club. If I have forgotten anyone I am sorry, but thank you.

THE JOEYS WAY

Sam McTaggart

Junior Coordinators Annual Report 2016/17

New Zealand Cultural Exchange

Led by Barry Knight, 15 players and 10 Parents journeyed to Auckland New Zealand to play 5 matches over 10 days. The boys came away with much more than the 2 wins on the field as a wonderful experience was had by all, taking in much the sights and culture New Zealand had to offer. A great fundraising effort by Barry and his subcommittee to get St Joseph’s second trip over to New Zealand.

Under 17’s Congratulations to the players of Team Thomas and Coach Tim Bye for taking out the Premiership in the GJCA JUST competition.

Thomas Team’s Tom Courtney took out the GJCA Junior player of the year and along the way collected some silverware for winning the GJCA Average and Aggregate. Well done Tom for a standout season.

In the EVERETT competition Team Fitzgerald and Coach Tim Stacey made it to the Semi-finals, unfortunately going down to eventual premiers Newtown & Chilwell in a close fought encounter.

Team Slater finished 7th on the DEMPSEY competition ladder with first time coaches Shayne Gardiner and Lucas Baldock doing a stellar job with the players all season.

Special thanks to U17 net coach Brian Thomas for his dedication to the U17 players all season.

Also well done to Riley Burg who represented Victoria in this U16 age group this season

Congratulations also to U17 players Harvey Carmody, Jack Wyeth and James Maiden who were part of the winning U17 Country week team.

Under 15’s

Congratulations to the U15 1st T20 team for taking out the Midweek Division 2 Premiership. Thanks to Roger king and Paul Owen for coaching the boys.

In the EDMUND competition Coach Barry Knight had the McFarlane team coming home with a wet sale to finish 6th, only a game and a half outside the top four.

In the DOUGLAS competition St Josephs combined with South Barwon CC to avoid both clubs having to roster out up to 5 players each week due to the odd number of players we had at the start of the season. Thanks to Mark Appleford and Simon Armstrong who kept the boys going all year.

In the McMAHON Competition Team Davie Coached by Doug Combridge made it all the way to the Grand Final. Unfortunately the boys went down in a great contest to the strong combine team of Modewarre/Winchelsea/Anglesea.

Special thanks to U15 Coordinator Adam Buttigieg who also doubled up as the club junior registrar and too Roger King for being the net coach all season and also Shane Fitzgerald who came along and offered the boys some tips throughout the year.

The u15s held an advanced training session on the 27th of November. The day was well attended, thanks to Ian Courtney (cricket operations) for leading the day and organizing the senior players to attend.

Under 13’s

Team Mullen Competed in the Saturday Morning ROYCE competition finishing the season on a high with Coach Shaun Cannon getting the boys up to defeat second placed Geelong City.

Team DeGrandi and Team DEAN competed in the Friday night competition with first time coaches Paddy DeGrandi, Jackson Bye and Fletcher Wilson at the Helm of DeGrandi. These young men did a great job along with Aaron Alsop who coached the Dean team.

Many thanks to all coaches and managers in particular Anita Thomas, U13’s Coordinator for her hard work this season.

Under 11’s

Thanks Jessie Clark, Thomas Courtney , Leigh Harry and Dean Smith who all gave up their time this season to Coach Teams Buckley, Gannon and McKinnon. All three teams had a very enjoyable year. Special thanks to U11 Coordinator Jackie Caracella for her organisation of the U11 competition this season

Pocket Rockets & T20 Blast

Congratulations to Rick Humphrey and his band of many helpers who put on a magnificent 10 week program for our U9’s this season. Rick has worked very hard on building the talent pool of our next generation of junior cricketers.

I would also like to thank all the team managers, Coaches and everyone who helped out during the season.

I would like to finish by also thanking all the parents who volunteered sometime over the season. Danny Keane SJCC Junior Coordinator
